Hines Ward to retire?

Posted on: January 9, 2012 10:14 am

Did Hines Ward play his last game? It appears he might have. A Steelers player texted to me the expectations around the team was that Ward would soon announce his retirement. That doesn't mean it's set he will. That means some Steelers players believe it which means it's likely to happen.

Ward is a different sort of dude. He could decide to hang on for one more year. But for the moment that doesn't seem to be the case.

Ward is clearly done physically. He just doesn't have the burst he once did. He was held without a catch against the Broncos and has become an afterthought in the Pittsburgh offense.

Yet, to me, he's a sure Hall of Famer. He became only the eighth wide receiver to reach 1,000 catches, had a lengthy and productive career, and won championships. He was one of the toughest receivers I've ever seen.

And it appears we've seen the last of Ward in the NFL.

Vegas dave are you smoking crack? You are right the game shouldnt have ended that way. Steelers and the NFL and the refs GAVE the steelers the ball when it was CLEARLY a backword pass. Then the squealers score a touchdown. You are right shouldnt have even gone to overtime. Broncos win in regulation if the NFL doesnt tell the refs to call it COMPLETELY one sided.

Does anybody else think his head looks like a jack-o-lantern? If not, it is definitely colored and shaped like a pumpkin. Good bye cheap shot!!

Hines Ward to retire?

A good receiver and sorry to hear some disparage him.  Probably inevitable given his cap number he would have to restructure or Pittsburgh might just cut him.   The key is does he want to "hang on" or go out with dignity?   He has accomplidhed a lot in his career and can go out with his head held high.

Hines Ward to retire?

Good riddance and one less cheap shotter in the AFC North. I was at a game where he gave a forearm...after the play...to Bengals then-rookie Keith Rivers..and broke his jaw, putting Rivers out for the season. I know it's not just Ward...it's also the entire Steeler philosophy of taking the cheap shots whenever possible, ala Kimo von Oelhoffen on Carson Palmer in the 2005 playoffs.

Ward's  crap eating grin will not be missed.

Hines Ward to retire?

As a Life Long Steeler fan I must say Ward was one of the most exciting parts of that team. His contribution to the team, the game and the way he treated the public was truly a class act. When you hear how other players talk about him you get a sense for what he really meant to the game and to the team.

That being said his time is obviously done. He passed the torch a few years ago to other receivers and has been metoring ever since the last Suber Bowl victory. It's now up to Wallace to be a franchise receiver and live up the Steeler Greatness the Steeler receivers have had.

As for the Bronco game goes. You Bronco fans should be enjoying this while you can. There is no way that game should have gone the way it did but the way the Steelers played and the coaches coached they did not deserve to win either.

When one of the worste throwing QB's has that type of a game and average receivers look like super stars the defense definately broke, not just bent. Especialy in OT they never should have left the middle and secondary open like that.

It's time to just get excited about players getting healthy and some good games coming next week. The bummer is they are all in the NFC.

Hines Ward to retire?

Good ridence to the dirtiest player in the league. This was voted on by the players themselves and thats saying something for a wideout to play that way.

Good bye to a great wide reciever. Its been a blast watching him through his career. With hands of glue and and a smile on his face, he maybe one of the best slots ever to play the game. And to imagine he was a quarterback in college. I will never forget his great blocking skills, probably the best wideout blocker ever. And of course the best dancer in pro football history. See you Hines you legacy will live on.
