The Daily Shoutout: Ugly fans

OPENING HIT: One of the reasons why I've always liked fans of the Green Bay Packers is that I've always felt they're the best combination of smart, passion and non-jackass. Let me explain. Packers fans have the passion of the most rabid fan bases without the nastiness. Few fans are more informed about their team. It's a way of life for Packers fans. These aren't Gator fans or Ohio State fans who are insecure and nasty. These a true football fans who know how to have a passionate debate without getting ugly. It's the best component of their fandom.

On Sunday night, after a brutal loss, a handful of Packers fans -- malicious idiots -- engaged in some of the nastier acts by fans, any fans, I've ever seen. All on Twitter. This isn't an indictment of the entire Packers fan base. This is an indictment of a few knuckleheads and the age we live in. We live in a period where there are plenty of anonymous gangsters who have turned message boards into sewers and a nice medium like Twitter into, at times, garbage.

Some of these idiots went after Packers players on Twitter after the loss -- and the families of Packers players. They completely crossed a line. Jermichael Finley was attacked by fans for dropping a pass but some of the fans didn't stop there. They attacked his wife, Courtney, on Twitter. Leading to her posting this: "If ure bored tonight & want to see how disgusting people treat other people.. Feel free to go thru my mentions 2 see how heartless ppl r."

I won't repeat some of the stuff posted but it was truly nasty.

One fan actually went as far as to blame Joe Philbin for the loss. Philbin of course tragically lost his son.

Again, these animals don't represent the Packers faithful. But this was still bad. It was a sad moment, actually.

I've always believed the NFL should act against Twitter goons. Find out who they are and if they have season tickets, yank them. If they don't, ban them from buying anything NFL related. Use the best available technology to pursue and ban these jackasses.

This is how great the Packer fan base is: Packers fans began to blast the idiots who were posting the ugly things. It warmed my heart and gave me hope that the Internet hasn't turned completely into a cesspool.

FB and Twitter are the playground of people with the mentality of teenage girls.  If you stay away you can't be offended.

those people are also the idiots who think it gives them the right to say what ever they want with out any repercussions from anyone when in fact freedom of speech only protects you from the government putting you in jail for what you say.

That's not true either.
As long as you're not being slanderous or trying to incite someone to commit a crime, you have the right to express your opinion without interference from anyone else. It's not just about not being thrown in jail. It's about the right to express your opinion even if someone else is offended by that opinion. It's the first amendment. Learn it.

I love how ignorant people always yell about freedom od speach and freedom of the press.  Although these are powerful, and in most cases good, something called human decency trumps them both.
No it doesn't.
That's the point of freedom of speech. You don't have the right to NOT be offended by what someone else says.
Sure, they COULD have the decency to not be idiots, but that decency DOES NOT trump that persons right.

I agreed with your column up until you hit this point.
Why is it up to the NFL to seek out and ban these morons?
And what happened to free speech?
Did they cross the line? Maybe. Was it poor taste? Absolutely.
But ban them from buying tickets or merchandise? An absurd solution.

It's a shame that the link to this article completely singled out Green Bay fans.

It is also unfortunate that these so called "Fans" would even have the nerve to post hurtful, and classless comments on a social media site. I mean come on, I am a fan and have talked my fair share of smack over the years and even have made comments that I regret but to attack a players wife or a man who just lost his son is absurd.

The Packers have such a long history of winning and being a high caliber team in the NFL, do these "Fans" expect to win every year?

Even if they do, there is no excuse for their actions. It's awful that people take this game so serious and somehow act like the team in which they cheer for somehow owes them something. Sure, we all buy Jersey's, Hats, Tickets, and whatnot but it's our choice to be a fan of a certain team. OUR CHOICE being the main point here.

It's sad to think that there are people out there that have enough time on their hands to go completely out of their way to try and emotionally hurt another human being.

Shame on the people who did this.

I feel bad just reading about something like this.

I agree 100% that there was definitely out of line tweets and comments and those I dont condone and I dont believe the true Packer fans do either. I think what people like Jermichael Finley and his wife lose sight of is that they are merely a small blip in a rich and lengthy Packer history and tradition.  They forget that the fan base is the reason for their exsistance as Green Bay Packers. Without the arguably and most dedicated fans in the sport they dont have the paychecks they do. What really makes me mad beyond belief is Jermichael's tweets today turning everything into a huge joke! The fact that he can't consistantly catch a ball for millions of dollars is the only joke. I spent thousands of dollars on tickets, airfare, hotel, rental car etc. to travel to Green Bay from Dallas this year and it saddens me that immature and arrogant players like him forget how he makes the amount of money he does. He is a truly poor representation of a Packer. Learn to be HUMBLE and APPRECIATIVE. Free agency could not have come at a better time! Peace 88!!

To the true Packer fans I'm sorry for your lose. I too was very bitter when my Bills started so strong just to finish like have every year for the past 12 years. However I love my team and no matter how dissapointed I have been with them I will "NEVER" bash or threaten them. IT'S ONLY A GAME... it's entertainment for us fans. It is sad to have a few MORONS  that think being violent or abusive is their right... It's not! The problem is that is what our society has come to. I like how these arm chair quarterback's think they know everything. These LOSERS can't even control their emotions. Maybe they should try out for these teams and show everyone how they are winners and the players there are not. I bet they wouldn't last 5 minutes. So all you Idiots... Get a life!

To all the teams left good luck and to all the teams at home... there always next year.
