The Daily Shoutout: Ugly fans

OPENING HIT: One of the reasons why I've always liked fans of the Green Bay Packers is that I've always felt they're the best combination of smart, passion and non-jackass. Let me explain. Packers fans have the passion of the most rabid fan bases without the nastiness. Few fans are more informed about their team. It's a way of life for Packers fans. These aren't Gator fans or Ohio State fans who are insecure and nasty. These a true football fans who know how to have a passionate debate without getting ugly. It's the best component of their fandom.

On Sunday night, after a brutal loss, a handful of Packers fans -- malicious idiots -- engaged in some of the nastier acts by fans, any fans, I've ever seen. All on Twitter. This isn't an indictment of the entire Packers fan base. This is an indictment of a few knuckleheads and the age we live in. We live in a period where there are plenty of anonymous gangsters who have turned message boards into sewers and a nice medium like Twitter into, at times, garbage.

Some of these idiots went after Packers players on Twitter after the loss -- and the families of Packers players. They completely crossed a line. Jermichael Finley was attacked by fans for dropping a pass but some of the fans didn't stop there. They attacked his wife, Courtney, on Twitter. Leading to her posting this: "If ure bored tonight & want to see how disgusting people treat other people.. Feel free to go thru my mentions 2 see how heartless ppl r."

I won't repeat some of the stuff posted but it was truly nasty.

One fan actually went as far as to blame Joe Philbin for the loss. Philbin of course tragically lost his son.

Again, these animals don't represent the Packers faithful. But this was still bad. It was a sad moment, actually.

I've always believed the NFL should act against Twitter goons. Find out who they are and if they have season tickets, yank them. If they don't, ban them from buying anything NFL related. Use the best available technology to pursue and ban these jackasses.

This is how great the Packer fan base is: Packers fans began to blast the idiots who were posting the ugly things. It warmed my heart and gave me hope that the Internet hasn't turned completely into a cesspool.

The Daily Shoutout: Ugly fans

Let me preface my comments by stating i am a true and through die hard Packer fan.  I deplore ugliness and sore losers in every aspect of life, and the personal attacks and malicious comments from any fan base is unwanted and needless.  These are not true fans of any team,  they may not even be fans of said teams that lose, but just want to make others look like trash, but that is what these people are.  Trash, because they cannot differentiate between a GAME and LIFE.  I was dissappointed the Pack lost, but the Giants deserved that game because they were the better team on that day, (and as Ryan Grant stated after the game, the packers did not play Packer football).  This is a game in the realm of life that shows us it doesn't matter how we did in the past, but that we can achieve great things as individuals, teams, companies, nations, or humans of what we can accomplish on a given day if we strive for excellence or greatness.  Congrats to the Giants for advancing and playing GIANT football, and congrats to the Pack for a great year and great record among tragedy in recent weeks, but hey, there is always next year, Pack.  Go Pack!

love how ignorant people always yell about freedom of speach and freedom of the press.  Although these are powerful, and in most cases good, something called human decency trumps them both.  But that's too much work.

I agree 100%, and those people are also the idiots who think it gives them the right to say what ever they want with out any repercussions from anyone when in fact freedom of speech only protects you from the government putting you in jail for what you say.

P.S. Twitter and facebook (i.e. all social sites, which I deleted two years ago) are just a place where cowards can make comments and hide in their basement....same for message boards, regardless what site they are on.  I admit that when some jerk puts on a post that irks me, I sometimes become a jerk right back at them.....but I would do the same in public and at their face! In this new way of life....of wanting to be liked and have 500+ friends, so you can tell them what you had for breakfast, is just plain bad for a part of society.  Use it to improve the way of life and not a way to discourage having a life!

Great article...agree 100%.  The "fans" that did this, were not Packer fans....just the newborn "bandwagon" fans that lost in their company pools or lost some wagers.  In football, especially the NFL.....Any Given Sunday is realization.  There is no blame here, just credit to the team that played better on that day.

One thing I found out last year when I went to Lambeau for the first time ever (when my team got their butt kicked, very bad) is that the Green Bay Packer fans are definately the most knowledgable, most generous, most kind and all around very good hosts and great fans. Eighty year old ladies walking up to me in the stands and telling me "welcome to Lambeau....have a great time and good luck to your team, thank you for coming up here".  I was completely dumbfounded, but had a GREAT time in a 45-7 blowout of my team (and I dont take any loss very good)....all due to the fans!

Any fans that are taking that route and becoming ugly...should be taken into the backyard and given an old-fashion whooping!  Great teams lose games (ask the Patriots), players play badly, coaches make wrong decisions....but fans have no ground to stand on when going after players wives, coaches going thru tragedy....that is pure BS!

If you are at your teams game and they are losing.....and you decide to leave early to beat traffic (yeah, great excuse) or for whatever reasons....leave your jersey at the door and dont come back!  Take a page out of the Packer faithful and just be a fan..win or lose!

Hey Freeman, that happens here on the CBS message boards also. There's one in particular that the CBS admins refuse to rein in. He's called............Ah, we all know what he's called.

I agree 100%.

Mike you are a quick to run your mouth, thoughtless Jackboot reactionary. NOW, follow your line of thinking (read, NOT thinking) and ban me from your blog, or better, ban me from the internet altogether.

The most amazing thing about the internet, and by association the twitterverse, it is open and free for people to speak their minds, even if, as in your case, they haven't one.

I dislike or abhor at least 50% of what I read on the internet, but I will always fight against anyone attempting to censor free speech.

Along with the right to say what we feel, no matter how wrong or ignorant we may be, comes the oft distasteful task of enduring the ignorant, malicious, disgusting and inciting blather of others.

I would hate to have a life so pathetic that the outcome of a football game would lead me to insult people's wives or worse yet, insuate a father who had lost a son was to blame for the loss.  By the way, the Packers offensive game plan was fine.  Show me a team that drops 3 passes and turns the ball over 3 or 4 times and I will show you a loss anytime.

Nice Bone-headed logic .... You argue that "This isn't an indictment of the entire Packers fan base." - Because some how the collective Packer Fan base is on-average superior?   ...  and you somehow feel that it makes sense to argue "These aren't Gator fans or Ohio State fans who are insecure and nasty."  ?? because you have some sort of basis to make a catagorical judgment about the entire Gator or Ohio State  fan base ???
How does this work? - some Packer fans behave horribly & you say it doesn't represent the Packers faithful ...  but let a handful of Gator or Ohio State fans behave poorly & you are happy to paint them all with the same brush & call them insecure & nasty.
Come on Freeman - you are better than this!
