The Daily Shoutout: Brees contract will get done?

OPENING HIT: Drew Brees' contract expires soon. It'll get done, of course. Right. Right? Hello? Is this thing on?

That's what the Saints continually say. Brees will be back, a new deal will come. I do believe that. Mostly. Kind of. But in speaking with sources on both sides of this there is a certain amount of digging in. The talks between the two sides (for now at least) have gone nowhere. That can change in an instant but for the moment the gap is wide.

I was once told months ago this would get done fairly easily but now there won't be anything easy about it. This has the potential to get long and nasty and could extend into off-season workouts and well into training camp.

I don't understand the Saints' handling of this at all. For everything Brees has done for that organization -- a Super Bowl, a class act, a great representative off the field post-Katrina -- you roll out the ATM machine for Brees. You pay the man. You freaking pay the man.

Trust me on this: Brees feels the same way. He'll never say it publicly but he does and I can't blame him. His contract status should have never, ever reached this point. It's a blemish on Saints ownership and management that it has.

According to NFL blogger Brian McIntyre, the Saints have $125M in cash committed (guaranteed and non-guaranteed) to players over 2012 and 2013. That's the second lowest in league to Cincinnati's $90M. That's pretty bad.

Time will pass, this will get done, but it may not be pretty along the way.

This could get nasty before it gets better.

Brees' agent has said that they won't sign the franchise tag.

He's earned his and should get it.  He's 33 now.  Why should he take less than he's more than earned?

I have a BAD feeling that I'm going to hear "How about those Cowboys!" - coach Sean Payton's family moved back to Dallas last summer.  I hope this doesn't happen, but I can see:

Payton as Coach
Brees as QB
Romo trade for two #2's this summer.

if the saints want to be a contender, the deal needs to be done. i had not before the last few weeks watch drew brees very much. tht guy is really good. it is not his faultthe defense cannot stop a team twice. the defense lost that gme. i imagine it was a lot easier to let williams go after that performance. it sure cost them that gam and who know how far the saints would have gone.

May get surprised...

I wouldn't be surprised to see Brees NOT ask for outlandish money. He's plenty rich and can do no wrong in New Orleans. He can make the team better by assuring them of cap room. They need to improve the defense.

The Daily Shoutout: Brees contract will get done?

Another article about a team or individual who is not involved with the game at hand.  49ers, Giants, Patriots and Ravens will be involved in two Championship playoff games to decide who plays in the Superbowl.  Could we have something on the players who are still playing or are we done with real world and we need to speculate on what others might do later.  Come on.

This is an attempt to make a non-story a story. The Saints don't do ugly, neither does Brees.

It's natural to want to battle and not just cough up the dough unwittingly, but it will get done before training camp.

If it gets too pricey or ugly, they can simply franchise him for the next 2 years.

this is overblown - it will NOT get ugly, I promise you that. You will not hear a peep from either side (NO or Brees) while the negotiations take place. As Malkovich says, "Pay the man his money!"

It will get done and I doubt it will get ugly. They just need to hammer out the terms and how long, that's really it. Peyton and Brady are making around $18M a year on average, although Peyton seems to have some huge bonuses due soon. Brees might be asking for way more than that, in which case that would be the holdup. It's still a team game, you really don't want to put more than say 15% of the cap in any one player, and that's a high amount already.

i think it would be fun if the eagles front office swooped (see what i did there?) in and stole brees and ditched the dogkiller.
