Super Bowl Daily Shoutout: The Ugly Pro Bowl

OPENING HIT: Wide receiver great Cris Carter, who has played in a Pro Bowl or two, called Sunday's Pro Bowl game "unwatchable." That's extremely kind. That game was an abomination. Without question it was the worst all-star game I've seen in over 20 years of practicing sports journalism. The NFL and its players should be ashamed of themselves for allowing that monstrosity to happen.

The NFL normally puts on an almost flawless product. Football is the best sport because it's the most watchable, the most exciting, and perhaps more than anything, its players play hard all the time. That's not the way it is in baseball or basketball. In football, it is.

The Pro Bowl, with defensive backs giving 20 yard cushions, no one tackling, everyone playing not to get hurt, seriously undermines the great leaps the league has made to solidify its product as the best.

My guess is the NFL knows this and I've spoken to some team and league officials who were also stunned at what they saw. Changes will come and they may come very quickly.

All-Star games are indeed normally garbage but this was particularly bad. Never thought I'd say this but I now pine for the MLB All-Star game.

Changes will come and come quickly?  how?  you know that every coach and GM holds his breath during that game to make sure that they don't have a player who tears his knee up, or gets a concussion...any rule changes to make the game more physical or intense will be voted down 32-0 (unless the Raiders decide to continue Al Davis' tradition of abstaining or voting against every proposal, then it'll be 31-1 or 31-0)...

if you really want to make changes, start by giving up on the idea of what's essentially become a non-contact practice in pads...make it a weekend based on different skills competitions, both athletic (such as speed and strength like youd see at the combine), and football-related (such as QB-accuracy), then top it off with a flag-football game (no pads)...

Definitely agree with hqic, the NFL Pro Bowl is a joke.  Heck at least the MLB gives out home field advantage.  Gotta say that the NHL game is actually watchable.

Super Bowl Daily Shoutout: The Ugly Pro Bowl

I am on an international assignment in China and I get my NFL off the "illegal" satellite dish I have.  I recorded the Pro Bowl game while I was at work and stayed off the internet all day so I would not accidently get the final score.  Once I got home and set up my chips and dip and Coke zero to hunker down for some football, it took me about one series to see that the defensive and offensive lineman were not even hitting, hell...barely even touching the opposing player.  I saw nobody tackling and everyone laughing.  I stopped the recording...changed to some rerun of Two and Half Men and then went to bed.  That was not NFL football and was a slap in the face of every NFL Fan.  Shame on the league for putting out a piece of trash.

I guess I didn't realize that it was a surprise the Pro Bowl is a joke. With the beneficial rules in place regularly PLUS the rules to stop injury, who thought they'd get anything different? I guess the NFL missed the memo where if someone asks "What are we doing for the probowl" 99% of answers are "not watching."

Anybody that watched the game expecting something different... where have you been?  That's the way the pro bowl is.  I admit that I didn't watch this year's pro bowl, but then again, I haven't watched more than 45 total minutes of the pro bowl in my lifetime.

Just get rid of the game entirely.   The passing competition for example they had a few years back bring that back but also come up with ways DL and OL can compete against each other.  Their little slapping hands fighting in the probowl was just pathetic.

The player don't want to go, the fans don't care to watch. The sports reporters are stuck.  It is only a week and that week is behind us.  The next player to end his career at this game should finish this waste of time off.

You mean the NFL doesn't already play like they do in the Pro Bowl?

I agree. It was sandlot football at its worst. I quit watching. I was actually embarassed. If this is the future of the Pro Bowl, let's not even play the game. Let's just elect the players as an honor and leave it at that. I understand teams not wanting to risk injury to their best players, but this was a farce. Either play the game or don't. This was an insult to the sport.
