Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

I'm not going to be one of those whining, smirking people who complains about the Hall of Fame voting process. I know some of those men in the room. Many are skilled, brilliant and extremely smart about the game. A handful are arrogant jerks with hardcore agendas but the vast majority know what they are doing.

So I'm not going to complain as much as simply be stunned over the omission of Bill Parcells. I'm not a Parcells fan. He treated many people in my business terribly and wasn't exactly a great human being. But to me, in history, there are few better coaches.

The two greatest motivators in NFL history, the coaches who got players to do things and go places in their careers they thought they never could, were Don Shula and Parcells. The best pure motivators ever. Period. That is a coach's primary job. Nothing happens before that -- not the Xs and Os, nothing -- before getting a player mentally ready. Shula was the best at that (what he did in Miami with the then expansion Dolphins is borderline miraculous) and Parcells was second.

He turned around the Giants, the Patriots and Jets when those latter two organizations were absolutely awful.

My guess as to what hurt Parcells. First -- and no one will admit this but it's true -- the way he treated some writers played a factor. Writers have long memories and we can be just as petty anyone else. There likely were a few writers in the room who were either treated poorly by Parcells -- or know people who were -- and this was a form of payback.

I've also heard some writers over the years (including some in that room) say that Bill Belichick made Parcells and Parcells never made it back to a Super Bowl without Belichick.

But most importantly it is accurate that when Parcells left organizations he left them atomized. His departures were sometimes very ugly and it likely also did not help Parcells that he left the Dolphins in semi-ruins.

But overall his record -- he took the Giants, Jets, Patriots and Cowboys to the playoffs while winning two of three Super Bowl appearances -- was more than enough to overcome his faults.

No, not a complaint here. Just sort of stunned.

Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

I understand Hall of Fame arguements for players and the general public has a pretty good idea was qualifies someone,  be in the top two or three at your position for many years,  it helps to win playoff games and Super Bowls.    Owners and Coaches, I do not care and the public does not know what the criteria is.   There are I think 7 owners in the HOF.   Do not know how many coaches.

Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

Maybe Parcells was a jerk to the media because they are sensationalist writers who only focus on the negative stories and great coaches like Parcells and Bob Knight despise that.

Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

I agree with this article.  I'm a Patriots fan and although I despise how Parcells left the team after the Superbowl in 1996 I cannot argue with the fact that Parcells is responsible for repairing a terrible Patriot team in the early 1990's.  I love Parcell's dedication to the profession.  Parcells was a jerk to the media and this must be their way to get back at him because I cannot see how you can say that Parcells does not belong in the HOF.  Parcells was a total monster to have to deal with if you were the media but you cannot argue that he was very entertaining.  One other issue Parcells is not in the HOF is because I anticipate that he will probably return to coaching at some point because I am sure that he misses it.

Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

Sports writers are MORONS.  I hate Art Modell for taking the Browns out of Cleveland, but that was one owner who pushed for Monday Night Football and ensured the NFL would become the money maker that it has become.  Bill will get in NEXT year because the "writers" will say he paid his price.  teams that he coached were both in this years super bowl.  He told Meami and Dallas what was wrong with their teams and ownership did not want to listen.  Did Parcells state that you could not with with Romo?

Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

Parcells doesn't need the Hall for his fame to live on. All the HoF voters can do by excluding him is make themselves look petty and ridiculous. It's even more egregious than leaving out Art Modell and Ray Guy. If the guys who sit in there with an axe to grind want to keep Parcells out, all they'll succeed in doing is hurting the legitimacy of the Hall of Fame. They can't touch the legacy of Bill Parcells.

Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

Parcells exclusion from Canton is the writers expressing their discontent with the coach for the several years of endless abuse and lack of cooperation. No one will question is legitimacy to Canton, but the writers certainly took this as an opportunity to demonstrate to Coach Parcell that they have the power now to determine when he is immortalized into the great walls of Canton, Ohio.

and his time in Miami doesnt really count towards his head coaching success beings he was VP of something or other not the head coach and he was not the problem when he left Miami Jeff Ireland was and still is the problem with the lack of talent in Miami...... that said Parcells was one of the greatest coaches in NFL history every team he went to went from awful to playoff caliber within two years of his arrival and the success those teams have had since all stem from what he started with those franchises

Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

With 2 Super Bowl wins and regular season success as coach of three other teams, there is a certainty that Parcells will be in the HOF.  Perhaps not today or tomorrow - but he will get there eventually.  Of this, we can all rest assured.  Yeah, I realize he may have had a few bursts of temper which have clouded his image a bit and that this may possiby be a reason why he did not get in this season.  But there is time. And it will come, soon.

Kudos to Parcells for all his past successes ~ future Hall of Famer!

Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

Parcells does belong in as does Haley.  Maybe there are too many senile guys on the voting panel.  Impose an age limit or a mandatory test to check if they are mentally capable of voting?

Parcells has HOF chops, his exclusion a mystery

The media could always count on Parcells to write their stories for them, but they could never count on him to kiss their bleeps.  Parcells should have been a slam-dunk, no-brainer, first ballot hall of famer.  Sadly, it looks like the media people who vote only remember Parcells' utter contempt for their stupid questions, and conveniently forget that it was Parcells who made Belichick, not vice-versa.

The writers should get rid of their petty agendas and do the right thing next year.
