The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

The Saints and Drew Brees are far apart in their negotiations for a long-term deal which could lead to something players despise: the franchise tag.

But before we get into that, let's go down the list of things to like about Drew Brees. He's coming off a record-setting year. He's one of the top three quarterbacks in football. Pretty good, so far. He's an excellent teammate, great leader and solid guy. More? Not a blemish off the field. More? He was a key party of New Orleans' recovery from Hurricane Katrina. On and on it goes.

Which is why it's a total mystery the Saints have yet to work out a deal with Brees. A league source says the two sides remain far apart and confirmed an ESPN report that New Orleans might use the franchise tag on Brees on Monday. Now, the ESPN report is slightly deceptive because if a team does use its franchise tag, they have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal and remove the tag.

My point is: What the hell are the Saints doing? I've said this before. There are certain players, only a handful, where you open the vault and roll out the cash. You give them a blank check. Brees is one of those players. Franchising Brees is going to anger him, no question. Players despise the tag because it limits their earning potential. So you've ticked off your best player. For what? Why?

The Saints want Brees and Brees wants to be a Saint, so in the end, Brees will get his long-term deal. It's just that the team is making Brees sweat it out. And that's just plain foolish.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

I'd have to agree with you on this one. I remember when Brees got hurt in San Diego (labrum), I thought he would be done. I had the same injury in high school, and that pretty much finished my chances of playing college ball, which had been promising prior to the injury. So glad to see that Brees has been able to not only bounce back, but also become one of the best players in the game.

The Saints need to lock him up, no matter what the cost. Yes, they can play some hard ball and try not to handicap themselves too badly, but if they let him walk the franchise should fold, that's how stupid it would be.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

As I have said on numerous ocassions..Drew Brees is overrated! I said it before he won the SB with the Saints and I said it again after he won one. The guy is surrounded by a great group of players. Even Alex Smith outplayed him in their most recent face off. And we all know what the world thinks of Smith. Don't get me started on Aaron Rodgers....his double stuff dance commercials is more annoying than the double stuff oreo commercials of the Manning brothers.

Saints are smart...not stupid. They won't overpay for Brees even if he is as good as Brees thinks he is.

Remember what I said about him breaking team rules and going behind the team's back and organizing workouts? I told you guys that the team didn't like that. BRees is not a team player. He is a glory hog. If he was intent on neing a team leader then why have press coverage announcing to the whole world that he is the one who took the ball and organized his teammates during the lockout. Many other players did the same and you didn't know about it. Simply put...in doing so they were breaking the rules. Do the Saints really want an out of control QB running their team? I sure would not and I am certain that you wouldn't either.

Keep dragging this out so Carl Nicks hits Free Agency. If a deal is reached before the tag then the best Offensive Guard in the pool is going to get Franchised.

First off, nobody just "opens the vault" for anyone.  Period.

That said, your description of Brees is accurate right down the line.  He is a class guy, he is an exceptional quarterback - like you said, top 3, and arguably #1 (as are the other two).

The franchise tag is the ONLY option for the Saints to retain exclusive bargaining with him - how is this an insult?  Besides, if he doesn't see it coming, either he is an idiot (highly unlikely) or his agents are (again, unlikely) for not telling him.  So he must know it will come.

And if so - big deal!  What are they going to do, lowball him?  Right.  What is he going to do, hold out?  Right, that's the team way to do things.

The two parties will come to an accord, guaranteed.  The question isn't if - it's "when" and "how much".

If the Saints don't want him, the Falcons would.

Wow...thanks for that article. It really brought us INSIDE the NFL. You are such an "INSIDER!"  So much research went into this. It must have taken you all of 2 minutes to write this crap.  CBS Sports.com is the biggest piece of garbage out there. How do they find such losers to post such garbage?
