The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

The Saints and Drew Brees are far apart in their negotiations for a long-term deal which could lead to something players despise: the franchise tag.

But before we get into that, let's go down the list of things to like about Drew Brees. He's coming off a record-setting year. He's one of the top three quarterbacks in football. Pretty good, so far. He's an excellent teammate, great leader and solid guy. More? Not a blemish off the field. More? He was a key party of New Orleans' recovery from Hurricane Katrina. On and on it goes.

Which is why it's a total mystery the Saints have yet to work out a deal with Brees. A league source says the two sides remain far apart and confirmed an ESPN report that New Orleans might use the franchise tag on Brees on Monday. Now, the ESPN report is slightly deceptive because if a team does use its franchise tag, they have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal and remove the tag.

My point is: What the hell are the Saints doing? I've said this before. There are certain players, only a handful, where you open the vault and roll out the cash. You give them a blank check. Brees is one of those players. Franchising Brees is going to anger him, no question. Players despise the tag because it limits their earning potential. So you've ticked off your best player. For what? Why?

The Saints want Brees and Brees wants to be a Saint, so in the end, Brees will get his long-term deal. It's just that the team is making Brees sweat it out. And that's just plain foolish.

Good Points! I think that they will get the Brees deal done before the tag date and tag Colston. Nicks might be the odd man out.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

It's really hard to keep a great team together for many years without teams picking your players out of your lineup year in and year out . Also everyone has to understand that you have a success window for about 3-4 years where you're going to be clicking on all cylinders before some pieces go missing and that's what's happening now to the Saints. They could have avoided some of this by signing and restructuring contracts early but you also run the risk of the back and forth distraction with that player and his agent dragging on through the season and the postseason as well. Graham will want a new contract soon as well. The Brees deal will get done, but I don't think Nicks will be back. Colston has a good chance to be back as well, but if the club feels that Graham can be leaned on more thoughout the season, Colston might not be back either. Success has a way of catching up to every team at some point and unless Loomis can time everything pefectly and put an elephant out of the hat, Brees is the only major FA on our team that will get signed before the FA market date starts. As long as Brees is signed in time the team will have a great chance of winning, but woe to the organization if this deal doesn't get done or takes too much time to get done.....

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

Let's be real here for a minute. Drew Brees just came off of the best year of his excellent career. Putting the franchise tag on a guy that you know is going to be a long term key player for the team is just idiotic. I wonder why the writer would think Brees would get the tag when you have a receiver in Colston that is going to be a free agent. It would make more sense to tag Colston and evaluate if he is a long term receiver for this team or not. Brees is a great person on and off the field and the owner of the Saints cannot afford to risk upsetting an all-star quarterback. Look at their history. They can't afford to have losing seasons for the next decade because a deal could not be reached when it clearly should be. He will get his deal this year, and the smart move is tagging Colston. Problem solved.
