The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

The Saints and Drew Brees are far apart in their negotiations for a long-term deal which could lead to something players despise: the franchise tag.

But before we get into that, let's go down the list of things to like about Drew Brees. He's coming off a record-setting year. He's one of the top three quarterbacks in football. Pretty good, so far. He's an excellent teammate, great leader and solid guy. More? Not a blemish off the field. More? He was a key party of New Orleans' recovery from Hurricane Katrina. On and on it goes.

Which is why it's a total mystery the Saints have yet to work out a deal with Brees. A league source says the two sides remain far apart and confirmed an ESPN report that New Orleans might use the franchise tag on Brees on Monday. Now, the ESPN report is slightly deceptive because if a team does use its franchise tag, they have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal and remove the tag.

My point is: What the hell are the Saints doing? I've said this before. There are certain players, only a handful, where you open the vault and roll out the cash. You give them a blank check. Brees is one of those players. Franchising Brees is going to anger him, no question. Players despise the tag because it limits their earning potential. So you've ticked off your best player. For what? Why?

The Saints want Brees and Brees wants to be a Saint, so in the end, Brees will get his long-term deal. It's just that the team is making Brees sweat it out. And that's just plain foolish.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

I honestly don't know what's going on, but there has to be a good reason why this deal isn't done or wasn't worked on at some point last season. Brees has done more than his fair share helping this city and state. Unless you waiting for the right time, GET THE DEAL DONE! They might not be as far apart as reports make it to be, but he's earned every penny!

Brees4mvp...is the deal done?  NO.  They are FAR apart.  If you cant sign one of the most important guys in the league, to YOUR team, something is not right, period.  This deal should have been done, but you are probally an inside source who knos it all.  But blogs in his off time.  Saints are messing this up big time, anyone who doesn't see that is a turd.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

Who wrote this article?  Further, where did he/she gets this BS information?  The Saints and Brees are not "far apart."  Each side knows the per year value and number of years.  The issue is over up- front money versus back- end money.  Contracts, as a rule, get axed and/or re- negotiated near the end of the contract quite often.  Players get asked to re- work deals, and Brees wants as much up- front money as possible.  He realizes a re- negotiation might happen in year 4 or 5 of this new deal.  That is the hold up.  This is another example of a writer "creating" a story.  Yes it is important to sign Brees.  Yes it will be done in some form or fashion.  But do not make it sound as if the sky is falling.  They are ironing out allocation and timing of funds. PERIOD.

It would be INSANE not to sign him. Give this man what he's asking for. If there's one man in the NFL that deserves it, it's Drew Brees. Not only for what he does on the football field, but also for what he has meant to that city. Get it done, Saints!

Sean Payton has to be pulling his hair out right now.  I mean, someone can sign Brees and give up two 1st round draft picks if they franchise him.  They HAVE to sign him.  It would be franchise suicide to not do so.

Important to sign Nicks & Colston also. Trying to get that done to see how much they can shower on Brees. Signing Brees and letting Nicks and Colston go to be able to pay Brees what he wants kills the team. Brees will find himself on his back alot if Nicks goes and no Colston to throw to before he's sacked. Chenistry is there, don't screw it up Saints, Brees, Colston or Nicks. This is the last year with a legitimate shot at the SB for this team without improving the defense significantly and getting a better left tackle.

The only reason I can come up with is maybe the Saints are waiting on Payton Manning to be declared a free agent. He is from New Orleans & would be a great draw. I know this would be a big mistake by the Saints but is the only reason I can think of why they wouldn't sign Brees.

that makes a lot of sense... (eye roll)... smoke another buddy

A post earlier eluded to the fact that there are several free agents unsigned. Maybe the Saints want to see if they can resign them and see how much they have left over. You can't tag everyone, so it would be in the best interest to get as many signed as possible for chemistry reasons. That being said, if I were owner, I would have signed an extension to my face of the franchise player last year, or the one before that. An owner can cut a player at any juncture of the contract (year to year) and not face cap issues. It's not like the NBA in guarateed money (except for up front bonus signings). Just ask Payton, the main reason the Colts will have to let him go, $25 Million Bonus due in two weeks!!!

I don't listen to any of this media crap too much. There isn't a story unless Bree's himself comes out and says whatever...
