The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

The Saints and Drew Brees are far apart in their negotiations for a long-term deal which could lead to something players despise: the franchise tag.

But before we get into that, let's go down the list of things to like about Drew Brees. He's coming off a record-setting year. He's one of the top three quarterbacks in football. Pretty good, so far. He's an excellent teammate, great leader and solid guy. More? Not a blemish off the field. More? He was a key party of New Orleans' recovery from Hurricane Katrina. On and on it goes.

Which is why it's a total mystery the Saints have yet to work out a deal with Brees. A league source says the two sides remain far apart and confirmed an ESPN report that New Orleans might use the franchise tag on Brees on Monday. Now, the ESPN report is slightly deceptive because if a team does use its franchise tag, they have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal and remove the tag.

My point is: What the hell are the Saints doing? I've said this before. There are certain players, only a handful, where you open the vault and roll out the cash. You give them a blank check. Brees is one of those players. Franchising Brees is going to anger him, no question. Players despise the tag because it limits their earning potential. So you've ticked off your best player. For what? Why?

The Saints want Brees and Brees wants to be a Saint, so in the end, Brees will get his long-term deal. It's just that the team is making Brees sweat it out. And that's just plain foolish.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

This page of posts has to be, collectively, the best group of comments I've heard on these boards. I find it funny that 4 or 5 guys were better than Mike Freeman. At least this column wasn't about race. Good job, Saints fans. Also, Carl Nicks is going to get PAID. IMO he's the best guard in the NFL and he's young. Good luck.

He is a fair deal based on Brees prior numbers, age and other quarterbacks deals. 4 years/ $85 Million or 5 years/$100 Million.
Book it.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

The only reason I can come up with is maybe the Saints are waiting on Payton Manning to be declared a free agent. He is from New Orleans & would be a great draw. I know this would be a big mistake by the Saints but is the only reason I can think of why they wouldn't sign Brees.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

He is as classy as any player in the NFL, or any other sport for that matter.  He means the world to the city of N.O. and he IS the face of the Saints.
But brining money up is just downright stupid.  You make enough.  Sign the paperwork, get the deal done, and move on.
Or else risk losing any respect that many of us currently have for you.
Very well put gopack, I agree with you 100%.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

CORRECTION:

I agree, that Saints should have locked up Brees a long time ago. I hope they do not think they could get someone else the same caliber or better at this point in time, unless they are prepared to start fresh and rebuild or be an average team at best with a so so vet quarterback, which there are not to many if one on the market right now.

Brees has earned himself a long term contract...he has turned the Saints into a team that is a contender.  Those many years of the Saints being nothing and all of a sudden, the Saints are contenders and winning a super bowl in 2010.  Saints management needs to pay the man!  Take a peak at the fan base there and see the difference of the money the Saints have made since the arrival of Brees.  Brees is New Orleans and if you ask anyone that are true New Orleans fans and love football, they would probably establish a pool for Saints management to siphon off of because Brees is so well respected in that town!

Brees is more than just a football player.  He is community minded and cares about the people of New Orleans.  He is a role model on what all players should strive to be.  I know the cap is probably playing a role in this because the Saints have some other free agents they need to sign also.  The most important free agent is Brees...he is the cornerstone of the Saints.  They also have Meachum and Colston that a decision has to be made about...Meachum will probably stay, but Colston will want the big bucks.  Carl Nicks is a big asset on the line to protect Brees.  They have to work a deal for him also.  That just mentions a few that are in the hunt for some money.  Its not time to start re-building...its time to work contracts and make things happen for the Saints fans.

The loss to Seattle 2 years ago was not a fluke.  Have you played in Seattle?  A great fan base and anything can happen in front of the 12th man!  Just this past year, the Hawks scored a win over the Ravens and played the 49ers tight. Its just tough to win in Seattle.  It could be the toughest place to play because of the fans.

In closing, the Saints management better wake up and smell the coffee.  The team they have right now is pretty darn good.  You lose a couple key free agents because you are penny pinching and you will find yourself losing fans and going back to being bottom feeders.  Just saying!

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

Does anyone know how much  Money/contract Brees wants?
I havn't heard any such demand from him. To me, I'd pay him top 3 money and end it there...It;s like the Pack or Pats doing this to their Qbs.I think that most ppl are pissed offf cause they don't have a top 5 qb on their team....I have always said that in any field of work that you should be paid whatever the Market dictates...If your average Trck driver makes 60,000 year, then that is what you should pay someone if you want great help. I say that you get what you pay for!!End of talks!!!
