The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

The Saints and Drew Brees are far apart in their negotiations for a long-term deal which could lead to something players despise: the franchise tag.

But before we get into that, let's go down the list of things to like about Drew Brees. He's coming off a record-setting year. He's one of the top three quarterbacks in football. Pretty good, so far. He's an excellent teammate, great leader and solid guy. More? Not a blemish off the field. More? He was a key party of New Orleans' recovery from Hurricane Katrina. On and on it goes.

Which is why it's a total mystery the Saints have yet to work out a deal with Brees. A league source says the two sides remain far apart and confirmed an ESPN report that New Orleans might use the franchise tag on Brees on Monday. Now, the ESPN report is slightly deceptive because if a team does use its franchise tag, they have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal and remove the tag.

My point is: What the hell are the Saints doing? I've said this before. There are certain players, only a handful, where you open the vault and roll out the cash. You give them a blank check. Brees is one of those players. Franchising Brees is going to anger him, no question. Players despise the tag because it limits their earning potential. So you've ticked off your best player. For what? Why?

The Saints want Brees and Brees wants to be a Saint, so in the end, Brees will get his long-term deal. It's just that the team is making Brees sweat it out. And that's just plain foolish.

How?  There's no mystery about how the Franchise tag works.  I don't see how that can be considered deceptive unless there was a suggestion that the two can't negotiate.  Heck, Drew Brees doesn't even have to sign the offer.

He might have another 4 years left in him.  I'm guessing he's asking for a big gaurantee, but not out of line of Brady or Rodgers. Pay the man his money.

EDIT: "He's one of the top three quarterbacks in football...when he plays in a dome or fair weather."

When he's not in a dome he loses to Seattle or the Niners.

I don't say this often, but the Saints should just approach Brees and say...what do you want?  Give it to him...he made a very average at best team completely relevant and simply awesome to be seen.  He fills your stadium, got you playoff wins and a Super Bowl victory.  This team had been around a long time and even when they made the playoffs fell flat on their faces...a simple fact.  Drew Brees has made the Saints what they are now and made them a lot more money than he may cost.  Negotiating is a part of the deal but I do see a used car salesman(ownership) playing with fire.

@ rh1935..... Jan. 14th, Brees was 40-63, 462 yards, 4 TDs, 2 Ints..... A stat line like that and he can't play outdoors? WOW!!!! Did you think maybe the Saints defense couldn't stop Vernon Davis and the 49ers from scoring 36 points? And Brees stats came against the #1 Defense in the NFL......

At least 25 teams will offer him a deal if they franchise tag him. What's it cost? A first round pick. I'd give up my first round pick no matter where I was drafting.

I agree.  He said some very insulting things about ownership.  This is what you told the media you think about us.  Here is what we think about you.

Brees deserves the tag....his lawsuit against ownership helped bring about the dynamic....if he is upset ...he will get over it

I think its awesome that so many football fans that don't root for the Saints, reallize what a tallent he is... I agree with all of you, Zeppelin, I hear you 100% about Jim Kelley.  I grew up a Dolphins & Dan Marino fan, same story.  Stokmo & Boston4life, you nail it about the Saints identity, he is New Orleans and without him the franchise is in potential trouble. Dirtmaggert, very blunt, and point well taken, as well as Finfang.  I just really like when fans of opposite teams can give thier input about theses situations, if all of us can see it, how can the Saints organization not?
