The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

The Saints and Drew Brees are far apart in their negotiations for a long-term deal which could lead to something players despise: the franchise tag.

But before we get into that, let's go down the list of things to like about Drew Brees. He's coming off a record-setting year. He's one of the top three quarterbacks in football. Pretty good, so far. He's an excellent teammate, great leader and solid guy. More? Not a blemish off the field. More? He was a key party of New Orleans' recovery from Hurricane Katrina. On and on it goes.

Which is why it's a total mystery the Saints have yet to work out a deal with Brees. A league source says the two sides remain far apart and confirmed an ESPN report that New Orleans might use the franchise tag on Brees on Monday. Now, the ESPN report is slightly deceptive because if a team does use its franchise tag, they have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal and remove the tag.

My point is: What the hell are the Saints doing? I've said this before. There are certain players, only a handful, where you open the vault and roll out the cash. You give them a blank check. Brees is one of those players. Franchising Brees is going to anger him, no question. Players despise the tag because it limits their earning potential. So you've ticked off your best player. For what? Why?

The Saints want Brees and Brees wants to be a Saint, so in the end, Brees will get his long-term deal. It's just that the team is making Brees sweat it out. And that's just plain foolish.

I see your point Castor, but calm down.  I beleive freeman is only making a case that we are talking about a premier elite football player here that deserves a top contract, and I agree! No, you don't give him insane money, but, Brees is so classy, I truly believe he is not looking for the max deal.  He already said, he wants the team to be profitable and have the ability to sign key players in order to help his cause on the field.

Mike Freeman I believe this was a great article and I could not agree more about his accomplishments.  On field; record setter, amazing ability, unselfish, and great leader. And, you said it best, off the field; NO BLEMISHES!  That speaks volumes and is rare this day and age. I became a Brees fan when he served 3 weeks of military training with special force Marines in Guantanamo Bay.  Who on earth wants to go to that dump? Brees did it for morale, extreme conditioning, and above all to show support for our troops! He gets my vote any day of the week for his one of a kind Class!

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

The Saints have made a habit of last minute negotiations for free agents.  In previous years, many free agents were signed the day before camp or shortly after camp began.  The problem with this go round is that the more they drag their feet, the more it is perceived that they are disrespecting Brees.  I happen to agree with that assessment.  With other players you may be able to use the argument, "Sign with us, it is less money but you can play with a Super Bowl contender."  With an unhappy Brees, that argument would just fly out the window.  As with many great players, how Brees goes so goes the Saints.  The Saints front office is playing with fire, I hope that the Saints fans don't get burned.

You don't have a clue Lumpco.  If the Saints sign Brees to a huge deal, it really won't matter because we'll just be rebuilding with one of the league's top 3 QB's, and pretty much zero receivers.  Everyone is in their contract year.  Meachum, Colston, his top targets, are both looking at the door if the Saints don't have the money to spread around.

This has ZERO to do with lockout workouts.  Do you SERIOUSLY think that Payton was not in contact with Brees at all?  Do you think that any of the top teams were not trying to get a leg up on the competition before the season starts?  There might have been a few teams that did nothing but enjoy the summer, but I guarantee you that the chance to lift that Lombardi Trophy for the teams with potential to do it, was something the owners would not want to have passed up, and were secretly glad their teams kept rolling along with workouts.

Alex Smith might have had a good enough game to beat the Saints in the playoffs, but you're out of your MIND if you think that one game made him any kind of measuring stick to how Brees is as a QB.  Alex Smith gained respectability, he didn't gain Godhood.

You got one thing right though.  The Saints ARE smart.  Sign Brees to top dollars and blow up half the team you can't sign, or keep negotiating and try to work something out.

The Saints are fools for their treatment of Brees

The saints are a low market team they are doing what they can.. why does that need to be explained.. why is it looked at like they are being cheap... the city of new orleans doesnt have the money to pay a top 3 QB. But I forgot, Freeman doesnt have common sense.

Mike Freeman, you are an idiot.

Your comment that "There are certain players, only a handful, where you open the vault and roll out the cash. You give them a blank check"  is asinine.  That line of thinking is why you are not the man, but instead work for the man.  Drew Brees is good, but no one deserves a "blank check" as you put it.

Great post, Freeman! Why in the world are the Saints dinkin around with this contract? Just give him what he wants and move on! They need to tag Carl Nicks, so give Brees his $100M, tag Nicks, and stop arguing over details in a contract that's going to get done anyway.

Lumpoco--please show me your credentials that puts you in a position to call Drew Brees overrated.  Every talking head inside and outside the NFL and the media that cover the NFL rate him no worse than the 4th best QB.  All you have is a keyboard, Internet access and an opinion without merit.

That's just it... they should have cranked up these negotiations (or the ones with Nicks) a lot earlier.  They needed to lock one or the other up earlier so they could franchise the other if needed.  Now it's looking like they're going to lose one just because they dragged their feet too much at the start.
