The $10,000 Saints bounty

Posted on: March 2, 2012 5:33 pm

By now you've heard about the Saints and Bountygate. Specific examples are leaking from the many pieces of evidence gathered by the NFL. Here is one from an NFL source:

At times, the NFL says, players both pledged significant amounts of money for bounties and targeted specific players. Prior to a Saints game in January of 2010 Jonathan Vilma, a team captain, offered $10,000 in cash to any player who knocked quarterback Brett Favre out of the game.

Favre was blasted in that game.

More of these will leak in the coming days in what is turning out to be a scandal bigger than Spygate.

The $10,000 Saints bounty

Why did it take 3 years to figure out what was so obvious. The game before they knock out Warner and then take so many cheapshots at Favre that he is forced to play on one leg and the Vikings only lost due to a flip of a coin in OT. The Saints have always been known for late hits and now we know why. Greg Williams should be banned from the NFL, he did the same bounties in Washington and now we find out that he may have put on end to HOFer Peyton Manning.

The Saints knew of the program and did nothing to stop it. They should be forced to give the Vikings their 1st round pick, give the Cardinals their 2nd round pick and the Colts their 3rd round pick in this years draft. They should also be forced to trade Brees to the Vikings for Ponder.

The $10,000 Saints bounty

Yeah, not very sporting of the Saints.  But once the Vikings saw what the Saints were doing they could have leveled Brees a time or two and maybe put a stop to it.  Oh wait, they didn't have a real head coach who could deal with anything beyond maybe x's and o's.  In the old nfl I doubt Bud Grant would have let the Saints play as they did without themselves paying a price for cheapshots.  The whole bounty thing sucks, but when it comes to the NFC championship game the Vikings should have taken care of business themselves.

The $10,000 Saints bounty

Are these Saint people really suggesting that they didn't know that Farve was getting pummeled against the rules? the Refs are just as much at fault for not prorecting Farve-The next season Farve was still injured from this game.

The game was so close that one or two calls would have had a changing effect.  The Vikings could have hammered Romo the week before (they were in the Cowboys back field all day) but played within the rule and did not-The Saints murdered Warner the week before-the Refs should have been ready the next week.

Shame on the Saints and Shame on the Refs

Saints-give up the rings and futire draft picks (for a couple years)

ban those Refs from the NFL =for good

The $10,000 Saints bounty

I am hearing news reports that this is much more widespread than Greg Williams and the teams he has been involved with.  I only hope that when the NFL takes action, it is fair action to all the teams involved.  In many ways I like the idea of "pay-for-performance" systems which reward those measureables that count (i.e. sacks, int's, forced fumbles, etc.), but we've gone a bit too far if we are talking about taking players out!

The $10,000 Saints bounty

With all of the Favre love it can't totally be said that "the NFL wanted the Saints to win that year because of Katrina".  How about the Vikings O-line keeping them off of him?

Think about it.  The Saints barely got past the Vikes in that championship game.
Yes, let's think about it....just imagine the outcome if for instance Mr Peterson or Mr. Harvin could have fumbled just 1 less time!!!

Think about it, What if Mr Favre does not throw yet another in the long line on soul crushing playoff int's!!

Think about it, if the league would have even fined the players for the "Illegal hits", well this would not have changed the outcome, but at least Viking fans would have some actual ammo for the "argument" of how the Vikes got screwed!

If this activity happens in society and outside the game, it would be a felony with the convicted parties facing significant jail time.
Think about it, Hmmm, it's almost like he knew it was within the confines of the football field.

I wonder how Vilma would look in an orange jumpsuit?
Think about it, he'd probably look pretty B.A., might even offer bounties on QB's in the prison football games!!

If a college program does something significantly against NCAA rules, they often times forfeit games and/or titles.
Think about it, it's the NFL!!! college rules don't apply!

Let's give the Saints' Superbowl title to the Colts...or better yet, the Vikes.
Think about it, on second thought let's not... only a delusional Viking fan could come up with this one!!

The $10,000 Saints bounty

So sad. NFL wanted the Saints to win that year because of Katrina. Every sport needs a feel good story and they make it so they win. Favre took a beating in that game. Never saw a qb take so much punishment. Too many flags weren't thrown. Were the refs getting paid from the players if they gave a big hit and didn't get flagged. Be interesting to see how far this trickles down. Jets assistant coach tripped a player on the sideline and he got canned. Will Payton get canned? It's a shame that the Saints are on the Lombardi trophy.

Did Vilma pay the $10,000???  Farve did get knocked out... so if he didn't pay... then it was just a guy, a team captain, talking tough to motivate his team.  Not a real story.  Move on.
