Brett Favre...Hall of Famer but barely top 10

These are the quarterbacks I would take over Brett Favre, who I thought would only retire after they pried the football from his cold, dead hands:<br />

<br />

Tom Brady, Joe Montana, John Elway, Peyton Manning, John Unitas, Otto Graham (the most underrated thrower perhaps ever), Dan Marino, Steve Young, Warren Moon, Roger Staubach and Terry Bradshaw.<br />

<br />

All of them had better careers than Favre.<br />

<br />

Favre's greatest asset was his endurance but his greatest weakness was his inaccuracy. He tossed more interceptions than any quarterback ever and that's not a good thing for an NFL thrower.<br />

<br />

Favre has been called a "gunslinger" a term that always amused me. When did that become code for error prone?<br />

<br />

All athletes should take notice of how Favre handled the media and fans. He treated both well and the media overlooked his glaring weaknesses as a quarterback because they liked him personally. He was rarely taken to task for throwing so many key interceptions in so many big spots.<br />

<br />

A non-partisan eye looks at Favre's career and sees it for what it was: he achieved Hall of Fame status and was a perfect fit in one of the top football towns in America but he never reached the top tier status of a Brady or Marino.

Favre was a solid QB and he will always be remember for being a solid QB. He belongs in the Hall of Fame with the other top QBs of the past. His completeion rate is at 96.7 percent. The best thing about Favre is that he loved the game and I wish he would come back for one more season. What he did this year with the team was just amazing. Nobody expected them to make the playoffs at all and he took them there only to lose to the Giants who went on to win it all.

Wikipedia had something wrong????  Shocking.  That's why I referenced the source.

Mike - you say you can form an opinion based upon what you read.  Have you read anything in these comments that gives you pause?  Are you sticking with the "bunch of homers" conclusion?

I personally think people fall into the "gunslinger" trap since it was repeated ad nauseum any time Favre stepped on the field.  I think over the years it morphed into representing mostly the interceptions, even though Favre's rate is not that out of line with contemporary greats and is quite a bit better than other contemporaries.  Other factors being that 29 pick season (when the Packers were playing with their 3rd and 4th string everything on offense), and the natural backlash when a team or player gets too popular.  Any thoughts on the points?

I wasn't present for the moon landing either but I sure think it was a neat thing. I don't have to see Otto Graham play. I've read books about him, like Paul Brown's book. I've spoken to people who saw him play. I can form an opinion without seeing him just like someone can form an opinion on the Iraq war without being in the Middle East.

You have witnessed first hand America, you haven't witnessed first hand Iraq.  UMMM,  are you saying your on the side of Iraq?  I don't get it, you used a bad example.  I've got a Chevette, it's in great condition, great gas mileage and is faster than a corvette.  Want to buy it Freeman?  It's the most underrated car in history.

How in the world do you NOt put Favre in the top ten?  This guy personifies football, tough, aggressive, passionate, and dedicated to his craft.  How about the numbers, Most wins, most TD's, Passing yards, attempts, completions, and yes int's but those are part of the Favre legacy, the ability to fail and keep your chin up, which most people, including most of the people on this board cannot handle.  How about the fact that Favre has 3 Mvp's and they came when guys like ohhh Marino, Aikman, Elway, young, and Moon all played.  Brady may have 3 rings, but he is not playing in a time with multiple HOF QB's right now there's 2 for sure Brady and Peyton.  Favre played in an era with 6 + HOF's and that does not include Peyton or Brady.  Favre is the ultimate competitor, the fact that he played 16 years (in GB) and never missed a single game is the ultimate measure of greatness, because whether he had a sprained knee, ankle, elbow, or even a fractured thumb on HIS THROWING HAND, Brett showed up and gave not only Packer fans, but FOOTBALL fans something to talk about every Monday at the water cooler.  He truly is the King of Kings!!!

God bless America, the Packers, and Brett Favre the Greatest QB ever.
