Dear America:

We, the mighty Los Angeles Lakers, would like to apologize to these United States of Americas for being choking goats.

We were once the organization of greats. We had names like Magic and Kareem. Now, we couldn't beat the New York Knicks.

We once knew how to close out teams, how to live up to expectations, how to grab greatness by the loins and squeeze. Now, we're a shell of ourselves.

We once had a team idiots like Mike Freeman stated would beat the Boston Celtics in seven games. Now, we've made many media members look like fools and foofs. Or FOOFS. Or phoofs. Whatever. You get the point.

We, the once mighty Lakers, have a player people compared to Michael Jordan. But would Jordan lose a Game 4 that way? If you believe that you are also a foof. Or FOOF. Or phoof.

Kobe Bryant is not Jordan. He's Ko-Me. Most of all, he still hasn't won a ring without Shaquille "Two Biscuits and Gravy" O'Neal.

Phil is being out-coached. He acts like he's in Vinyasa yoga class instead of the NBA Finals. The Europeans are surrendering again and Paul Pierce looks like Larry Bird.

So, in conclusion, we the once mighty Lakers, would like to say to America: We're sorry for wasting your time.

See you next year.

Sincerely,

The Lakers

The Lakers Apologize

Seems a bit harsh, and that's coming from a Celtics fan.  All the same, I can't fathom how they were able to let a game like that drop to the Celtics.  Then again, I might...

First, Kobe was out played, period.  He had a few moments of utter brilliance, that made your jaw drop.  Thing is, he's Kobe, he's supposed to.  What he ISN'T supposed to do is play second fiddle to the bench.  Pierce kept him begging for field goals all game, while on the other side Kobe just was not able to contain him.

Then there's the fact that, during the first half, I was starting to work on something as the Lakers began to pull away.  No, that didn't contribute to the win, but I'm getting to my point.  While only half paying attention, I would constantly hear the whistle blow whenever a Celtics player touched the ball.  It was almost as thought my Spidey Sense would tingle when I heard a Celtics player be named as having the ball.  Then, suddenly at some point in the second half, I noticed that I wasn't on pins and needles every time the C's touched the ball.  The refs weren't calling as many fouls on the Celtics, and dangit, they were crawling back.

The other reason I can peg the Lakers for, they got worried and the Celtics just kept coming at them.  I think the score got tied up a good 5-7 times before the Celtics finally took the lead in the 4th.  They lost some huge changes, and the Lakers kept beating them back down, but the Celtics would come right on back every single time.  Every.  Single.  Time.

Once they took the lead from L.A., it seemed like half the guys wearing purple and yellow started to get too frazzled to play.  They just looked scared, period.  Then what happened?  They lost the game.

I guess in that light, you're right.  They really did let a huge one fall.  However, I'm not crazy.  These are professional sports, and it's the playoffs.  Anything can happen, and regardless of how it happened, it still only translates to a single W.  Sure, that W puts the Celtics up 3-1, but I'm not crowing anyone a champion until one of those numbers reads as a 4.

What can you say about the Lakers? They are done, they played horribly last night. They looked in a daze. A few questions come to mind...

1) How does Phil Jackson, the greatest coach in the world, go into the locker room at the end of that game with time-outs in his pocket. Why weren't those used to try to stem the Boston tide during their runs. Being from LA, I have often complained about how our college basketball coach uses his time-outs too early, however at least he doesn't end games with time-outs on the board. Tthe Lakers didn't use all of their time-outs last night, that blows me away. Do they get an extra one to start game 5??

2) Where was Kobe?? How does an MVP allow this to happen at home?

3) Why is Lamar Odom not a better player considering his skill level. He looked like Karl Malone in the first quarter, where did that guy go?

4) How much does it cost to get Sasha another athletic supporter after that Ray Allen drive? Does he have to go to the boys section at Sport Mart and pick it up himself?

uncrocks: try decaf. take a breath before you keel over, Captain Fantastic.

Here's an offer: stop reading if you don't like it.

Very simple.

Instead, you not only completely exaggerate about how I write about race "in every article" -- please stop and think about that blatant lie for a second -- you go out of your way to comment on something you allegedly hate?

So, what does that make you, Tyler lover?

By the way, don't misdirect your rage at me. I didn't cause North Carolina to get bopped out of the Final Four or force one of your players to get popped for driving drunk. Not my fault. Go take out your anger on a NC State blog.

Carry on.

(Ko-Me, Ko-Me, Ko-Me...)

There is little in your letter that an objective observer such as I, a Spurs fan, can disagree with. First, you are correct in that the series is now over. Second, you are correct in implying that Boston has now asserted itself as the best team in the NBA. Third, you are correct in criticizing the Lakers for blowing this one. They were two different teams last night! How can a team play so well early and so poorly late? But the same could be said of Boston in reverse, playing poorly early and well late. Or is there something to this allegation of the fixing of games? And I am not a disgruntled Spurs fan. I was actually pulling for the Lakers. I once cheered for the Baylor-West Lakers and learned to dislike the Celtics almost as much as I dislike the Yankees in baseball. My one disagreement would be with the failure to recognize how far the Lakers have come since Jackson joined them as coach. They are much better, largely because of the acquisition of Gasol, but still better even without taking that factor into consideration. They are much improved and could be better next year, if Bynum is back and healthy and if they continue to improve. Congratulations to the Lakers for a great season, even if it is now over. Making the finals is hard, but they did it. Give them that much credit.<style id="jajah" type="text/css">span.jajahWrapper { font-size:1em; color:#B11196; text-decoration:underline; } a.jajahLink { color:#000000; text-decoration:none; } span.jajahInLink:hover { background-color:#B11196; }</style>

Kobe had plenty of help from his teammates in Game 4. He had only three points in the first half last night, and the Lakers were up by 18. It was when he tried to take over and tuned out all of his teammates that the Celtics came back.

stop calling him "Ko-Me" i'm sick of reading it in your columns. in fact, i'm sick of reading your work, period (though i never really liked it in the first place, especially that piece on tyler hansbrough only getting attention because he is white. come on now, do you have to throw the race card in every article too? can the fact that a guy posting better than 20 and 10 for an eventual final four team not be god enough to get himself national attention? is it only because he's white?). you think you've come up with the greatest thing since sliced bread with that stupid name and have overused it to the point where you just shove it in your writing at every opportunity just to point how "brilliant" you think you are for coming up with it. go ahead and trademark it, though it wouldn't make any difference considering no self-respecting journalist would ever want to use such a crappy name. and it doesn't even apply. kobe had a game high 10 assists last night. where exactly did that get him? i don't even care about nba basketball outside the finals, so the fact that i'm writing this just shows you how much i absolutely despise your usage of that ridiculous name to the point where i think i'm going to complain about it to doyel. stop using it!
