Is Tiger your 'Player' of the year?

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Tiger Woods debacle shows no signs of reaching the bottom of the barrel anytime soon, and a potentially awkward moment for his primary place of business is only a few days away.

On Dec. 18, the PGA Tour is set to announce its 2009 Player of the Year.

We all know who it is. A guy who has certainly proven that the word "player" has many connotations. He won six times on the U.S. tour this year, or roughly once for every reported extra-marital affair. But most of us have lost track of that second total, frankly.

If you call the shots at the tour, should you stick to that announcement schedule or push it back, say, a thousand years? By then, the cocktail waitresses, coffee-shop servers, reality-TV wannabes and vultures might have stopped circling. Maybe.

Previously, Woods had usually accepted the award at the Chevron World Challenge, which is taking place without him this week in suburban Los Angeles, having been moved up two weeks on the tournament calendar. But the player ballots haven't all been tallied yet.

At least this time, the tour can send out a press release at 5 a.m. on a Friday night and hope nobody makes too many jokes about it.

Speaking of which, the NBC broadcast of the Chevron event -- which benefits Woods' charity -- has had some head-scratching moments of organizational paralysis, too.

Despite more than a week of scathing, unseemly and seemingly endless reports casting Woods' character into doubt, a joint promo from Chevron and the Tiger Woods Foundation nonetheless aired during the Saturday broadcast noting that the latter helps enrich kids with "education and character-development programs."

Leno or Letterman will turn that incredible faux pas into a punch-line, probably, But at this point, it just makes me sad. Everything associated with Woods has been besmirched, no matter how noble the original intent.

Without a doubt, this scandal doesn't change a thing concerning his golf acheivements. But maybe there should be a "Playa Of The World".

Is Tiger your 'Player' of the year?

Without Tiger the PGA is about as popular as the LPGA. He is the player of the year.

Is Tiger your 'Player' of the year?

Tiger is the player of the year, no doubt at all. He was clearly the best golfer of the year.

Off the course, he clearly is a mess. The differance between Tiger and John Daly is Tiger hasn't done anything on the course to hurt the PGA. Everything he does on the course helps the PGA. John Daly on the other hand did things on the course that hurt the PGA, like being to drunk on the course to play or being to hungover to continue play in a tournament.

Comparing the antics ofOchocinco to what is going on with Tiger is apples to oranges, completely different arguemenet. The NFL needs to let the players have some fun. I enjoy watching the game more with Ochocinco in it and the NFL should recognize that he does far more good for the NFL than any poncho and sombrero could ever do to hurt it.

MVP awards and Player of the Year awards are based in performance in competition, nothing else.

It makes absolutely no sense to me that John Daly gets suspended from the Tour for 6 months "for conduct that brought unwelcome publicity to the PGA Tour" and Tiger could of the Year? What a joke! Cheetah's (oops, I mean Tiger's) unwelcome publicity is MUCH worse for the PGA than Daly's string of misadventures. Tiger is literally dragging the PGA's name through the mud with all of this (2 porn stars among his ever-growing list of alleged mistresses and abuse of prescription drugs).

How is it that Chad Ochocinco gets fined $30,000 by the NFL for wearing a sombrero and poncho and Tiger will get Player of the Year? What's up with that?!

If they give him Player of the Year, it will only show how unjust the system is and how far they will go to please its No. 1. Tiger may be the true "Player" of the year, but shouldn't conduct off the course be considered as well?

a Cheetah

Hit him with a club

and he is a bleedah

He'll lose all his sponsors

and the best he can do

I agree with what midnightdog1 has written _ well said.  I hope those involved with choosing the POY award can clearly separate the "sports" part and the "personal" part of what Tiger has accomplished in 2009.  Tiger: focus on the golf but don't shut off your friends _ in these difficult times, they may be your only sanctuary.

Why wouldn't Tiger be player of the year? His personal life doesn't factor into the equation as far as this award goes. Also, his foundation does good work and although the last week will surely not help setting Tiger up as any role model, the foundation can still be effective at providing "education and character-developement programs."  I, like many here in Vegas have been aware of some of Tiger's ways for a while now but I still enjoy watching him play golf. Don't get me wrong I don't like what he has done and wouldn't do it myself but I'm not in his shoes either. I don't have the temptations and the oppurtunities that he does so it would be easy for me to judge so I just take it for what it is. Everybody tried to build him up into something that he wasn't and he for the most part went along with it so he is definitely not an innocent victim but why do people care so much? It is only natural to follow the story out of curiousity but people have done far more damage with far less scrutiny than this. You seem to have done a 180 on Woods because of this and I don't understand. In your position you should have been at least somewhat aware that something was going on his personal life. I mean the time he was spending in Las Vegas night clubs and away from his family should have been the first sign and it's not like it was a secret.

Is Tiger your 'Player' of the year?

It's Tiger's World! Steve, here is a little something I wrote that I think sums up the whole affair (no pun intended!).
With apologies to Antsy McClain, without his great song "Way Cool World" this could not have been written. Look it up on Pandora or itunes and you can hum along while you read this.

I hopped into the Caddy to take it for a drive,
I didn't see the tree or the fire hydrant.
Elin's coming toward's me with my new 5 iron,
Up to now she never even knew where I went!

I'm laying in the street and it's just about three,
My mouth is all bloody and my cheeks are sore.
She was swinging like the branches in a sycamore tree,
but what bothers me most is she never yelled fore!

Oh it's Tiger's world (yes it's Tiger's world)
and it's cavin' in (yes it's Tiger's world)
Oh it's Tiger's world (yes it's Tiger's world)
and it's cavin' iiiiiiiiiiiiinnnn
(yes it's Tiger's world)

I was drivin' to the Walmart for the Black Friday sale.
I had to get up early 'fore the good stuff was gone!
I can't believe the tabloids aren't buying my tale,
They're talking to my neighbors who called 9-1-1!

(repeat chorus)

She went digging through my cell phone and she found some texts.
I don't think she was happy with what she found out!
With a house full of golf clubs you know what happened next,
like something out of a Holyfield-Tyson bout!

Oh it's Tiger's world (yes it's Tiger's world)
and it's cavin' in (yes it's Tiger's world)
I said,"Don't let this little thing get your head hurtin'
Then she took the fuzzy head cover off my Nike 3 wood!
Oh it's Tiger's world (yes it's Tiger's world)
and it's cavin' iiiiiiiiiiiiinnnn
(yes it's Tiger's world)
