Watson: Woods must clean up on-course act too

Although the criticism in golf circles over the two months since Tiger Woods began his spiral into exile has been fairly tame and downright limited in many regards, there have been a few salvos fired across the bow of the No. 1 golfer.

Jesper Parnevik, Colin Montgomerie and former coach Butch Harmon each have offered frank opinions on the fallout from the Woods scandal. The latest to join the choir, albeit with reasoned tones and a complete lack of hysteria, is Hall of Famer Tom Watson.

Watson, in an intervierw with an NBC affiliate in his hometown of Kansas City, said this week that he believes Woods not only needs to put his personal life on a fast fix-it list, he needs to rein in his outbursts on the golf course.

Over the past year, Woods' anger-fueled antics probaby reached a professional nadir, with two publicized incidents wherein thrown clubs wound up in hazards or the gallery.

"His swearing and his club throwing, that should end. That's not part of what we want to project as far as a professional golf tour is concerned," Watson said in the interview.

Here's the whole clip:

Mr. Teets,

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there, mkay?

FiveCents:

I never said anything contrary to what you argued in your comment.  So I really don't know how to argue back -- you didn't really address my comment at all; rather, you extracted sentiments that weren't there.

You seem to think Tiger is not inscrutable.  Welp, so do I!!!!  I just think that maybe, just maybe, this guy should find a different topic to write about in the world of golf, say...1 out of every 100 times he sits down at the laptop.

15 out of his last 12 stories have been about Tiger.  All I am saying is, DIVERSIFY.  It gets really, really old.  I am actually starting to think Elling has a non-non-sexual crush on Tiger.

Yah, I think Watson is one of the most hated guys on tour. Now we see why, tossing stones from his glass house. Tool!!!

When Tom Watson speaks, you have to listen. He, Arnie, and Jack are living legends and when one of them speaks about the World No. 1's conduct on the course, it's worth listening. This is a minor story, but still a story, regardless of Tiger's other issues.

Have you ever been to one of his tourney in person?  Club throwing hissy fit having kid...from time to time.  Definitely bad temper.   A-hole...depends on who you talk to.  Most tour players wouldn't agree.  Only now because they have to say publicly that they disagree with his behavior.  Slow Player?  No...  Generally he is 40 yards ahead of his playing partner so he is ready to play right away when the other guy hits.  On the green definitely deliberate but also the best clutch putter in the world.  If you don't like the guy, just say it but don't make things up pretending to know what you are talking about.

MJS - Tiger isn't afraid of being Tiger?  Are you serious?  The whole reason he is in this mess is because he was afraid to himself. Whenever somebody hides an addiciton that means they are afraid of being themselves for everybody else to see.  He wouldn't have gone through all the elaborate hoops to secretly get his women to and from tournaments.

I agree 100%.  Tiger wouldn't be the golfer he is if he tempered his competitiveness.  Once you lose the desire, it's difficult if not impossible to get it back.  Plus, i've heard plenty of stories about what a jerk Tom Watson can be.

NEWSFLASH:

Tiger is an a-hole, pretty slow player, club throwing hissy fit having kid.

if you were not aware of this, then you probably don't watch the tour unless wilt chamberlain is teeing it up.

Mr. Teets,

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you there, mkay? This is a tantalizing story. It has legs (pun intended). Any time someone says golf is not a real sport or personal issues are off limits, I will be there to tear you down. We are humans, not robots. We thought Cheetah was a robot, now we know he is human. That's a story. It may be a tabloid story, but it DOES affect what goes on inside the ropes too.

I think all of the interactions that Cheetah will have with fans and other players will affect his play when he comes back. It will change the dynamic and it will change professional golf. Life is messy. If you don't like it, then I have two words for you: Ha ha!

Because you're really, really running out of Tiger-related stories.  And it's only gonna get worse.  And since you're clearly incapable of writing about any aspect of golf outside of Tiger Woods, well...

Wal-Mart is always a good place to start.  And there's always the tabloids -- you've got a knack for that kind of respectable, meaty, investigative journalism.

There is always going to be opinions from others about one persons behavior.  Like it or not, Tiger Woods has to be who he is and not what others want him to be.  I don't want to see a robot programmed by others when I watch a golf tournament.  What makes Tiger great is that he is not afraid to be Tiger Woods.
