DORAL, Fla. -- According to a New York newspaper report, Tiger Woods has summoned a one-time aide to George W. Bush and an adviser to disgraced big-league slugger Mark McGwire, two guys fairly familiar with trying to salvage their reputations despite a rising tide of public opinion to the contrary.

Ari Fleischer, former strategy adviser to the younger Bush, has been meeting with the Woods camp in Orlando for the past few days and trying to conjure up a comeback strategy, to be set in motion perhaps within the next two weeks. As CBSSports.com first reported two weeks ago, Woods has been on the course almost daily working on his game, lately with swing coach Hank Haney.

Speculation continues to mount that Woods will play March 22-23 in the Tavistock Cup and make his official PGA Tour debut on March 25 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which he has won six times. Both events are played within five miles of his home.

The New York Post , in its Thursday edition, cited a souce claiming that Fleisher, who established a public-relations firm with IMG ties, has been called in to help Woods navigate the mess he created with a three-months-long sex scandal that has caused his approval ratings to plummet.

Sort of like what happened with Bush during his largely unpopular second term and McGwire when his use of steroids became public.

“They were in his living room this week going over a strategy for how to handle Bay Hill in two weeks,” one source told The Post.

One question screams for clarity: If Fleischer runs a firm specializing in public-relations crisis reponse that has direct ties to IMG, which has represented Woods for more than 13 years, what took so long for Woods' handlers to make the phone call and ask for advice?

At this point, it seems a little late to be spinning the story to make it more palatable.

Report: Woods hires Bush aide to clean up image

I've had a few laughs, over these many months of the Tiger saga.  This one was one of the best.

The debate between Tiger lovers and Tiger haters is ridiculous.  I learned long ago, through my association with a number of professional athletes, that they are no better or worse than anyone else.  Some are good people and some are idiots - all they have in common is a far superior ability at their game.  That's it.  None are worthy of worship!

Tiger, O.J., Ocho-whatshisname, T.O., etc...  The type is well known.  Elite at their sport, but disasters in their personal lives. I'm not comparing tiger to O.J., so drop the reply button now, but rather comparing the attitude of fans toward both.

Hiring Ari is simply proof in the pudding.  You don't hire Ari because you ARE a good person, you hire Ari so he can make you LOOK like a good person.

Frankly, I wish Team Tiger would just get on with it.

I'll be the first to admit that I buy TW golf wear from top to bottom, because the stuff looks great and is of excellent quality.  I even try to use Tiger's putting stroke because he is the best putter in history.  If I had played football, I would have tried to play like O.J. too.

Lucky for my wife and kids, that's where it all ends...

Normally, I wouldn't consider writing such a short response, but...  "Hey Tiger, if you want a good image and a solid reputation, play golf the way you always have, BUT act like you don't hate golf fans, tell your caddie to shut the hell up, don't crash into stuff with the Escalade, and be discreet about your sex life."  My invoice for this insightful consultation is on the way...

Does this mean that Tiger Woods will make a play to smear the lines between the branches of Gov't in an attempt to highjack the country in a power grab.... and maybe start an illegal war?

Cool!

Then maybe Tiger can go talk to 50% of Barry Soetoro.... errr... Obama's staff and find the CORRECT and proper way to swindle tax payers to make their former company Goldman Sachs billions and also how to properly cheat on his taxes.

Goooooooo Tiger!!!!!!!!!! WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU TIGER! Get that PR machine cranked up you empty shell of a human being!

Good luck with your daughter when she gets older and has her boyfriend cheat all over her! Oh wait - you won't be there cause you're pretty much the typical little elitist having nanny's raise your kids.

toodles!

This whole image thing is so overblown

Who cares what Tiger Woods' image is?  Anyone who buys something because Tiger Woods says to buy it is an idiot.  Any fan who feels somehow betrayed by Tiger Woods BESIDES his immediate family and friends needs some help.  Go find a church if you're concerned about moral values.  Here's how you rehabilitate your image, Tiger: fire Ari, get out there and win as many tournaments as you can and do it with respect.

Right on: ATLBravesN2007, well written post. I agree competely, 5 stars: Of course, most PGA members, beginning to get the spotlight on their careers, will be unhappy. Best golfer, in history of the game returns. Seems my earlier post, of Arnies Inv. being TW return, also most likely will be so, why not: Defending champion. Congrats Tiger, both resolving your personal issues and shutting up the haters, those also rans, who envy, so feared your skills, none more than Lefty Phil. M. Wanna be #1. Truth be known, even the greats of the Game, will welcome Tiger back!!!  " GO TIGERSmile

Purple, nice to see someone get Elling's back.  Whether you agree or disagree with him, the personal attacks on him is disgraceful.

Solid Gold, takes a lot of guts to call a man a loser behind a keyboard all anonymous like.  Your post makes no sense and speaks more to your character.  Not cool to post what you posted.

I have no idea what your problem is with Eling.  Your post makes little to no sense to me.  BTW, Tiger is ratings and he is doing his job.  He got you to read his story and make you respond so he must be doing his job well.

Fleisher Did A Horrible Job With Bush

Ari Fleisher did such a horrible job with Bush  -  why in the world would Tiger hire him to clean up his image?

This makes no sense  -

Why doesn't Tiger hire the PR firm for Toyota  -  that would probably do a better job.

How about people who put out New Coke  -    how about Toyota's engineering team  -  they know what they are doing......
