Tiger on Thursday: TV or not TV?

Posted on: March 31, 2010 8:41 am

Two of the key questions relating to next week's Masters involve how club officials will handle the pairings dilemma and when Tiger Woods will hit his opening Augusta National shot.

That is, which unlucky saps will be paired with Woods in the first two rounds, putting them in the eye of the storm as he concludes a 144-day layoff after enduring one of the biggest public-relations disasters in sports history, and how much will be seen on TV?

Just for the record, below is the complete list of his playing partners at Augusta since he turned pro, courtesy of the Associated Press. Also note the tee times, which are interesting in that the ESPN broadcast window on Thursday is from 4-7:30 p.m. Based on past history, it seems fair to say that in a best-case scenario, only his back nine will be televised live. The latest he has teed off is 1:52 p.m.

If he tees off in the morning wave, before noon, it stands to reason that nary a shot will be seen live on the network since he'll likely be finished by 4 p.m.

2009 _ 1:52 p.m.    Stewart Cink, Jeev Milkha Singh
2008 _ 10:45 a.m.  Angel Cabrera, Stuart Appleby
2007 _ 1:52 p.m.    Paul Casey, Aaron Baddeley
2006 _ 10:23 a.m.  a-Edoardo Molinari, Robert Allenby
2005 _ 1:33 p.m.    Darren Clarke, Carlos Franco
2004 _ 1:30 p.m.    a-Casey Wittenberg, Thomas Bjorn
2003 _ 10:44 a.m.  a-Ricky Barnes, Angel Cabrera
2002 _ 10:53 a.m.  a-Bubba Dickerson, Toshi Izawa

Tiger on Thursday: TV or not TV?

hptmainlogin, I truly am curious about something. I've read many, many times about how Tiger deceived everyone, or as you put it "portray yourself as something". I can't come to grips with that view. If Tiger was always doing everything he could to keep his private life private, how is it that he was portraying himself to be "a good man"? On the flip side, what would Tiger need to have done along the way to not portray himself as this good guy image. In fact, his temper tantrums and throwing clubs seems to portray Tiger has something less that "holier than thou". Like I said, every time I read something like you wrote, I end up going into spin cycle. :-)

I'll make a wild prediction here - the uproar over what Tiger has done may very well prove to be mild versus the future. Before saying why I need to be sure of one thing - that everyone understands that I am not saying Tiger is an addict.  But what I am about to say is based on IF Tiger is a sex addict. The recovery process for addicts is a long, brutal uphill battle. Only the most courageous overcome their addictions. Those that have will tell you this - the process is not a straight line up that hill, but rather steps forwards and backwards. I often said it was more like a heartbeat diagram than anything else. Now, IF Tiger is in recovery, IF Tiger is on that path upwards, what the hell will happen if/when Tiger falters and the news media finds out? Regardless, my prediction is this - the treatment Tiger is undergoing will result in winning becoming more and more unimportant to Tiger. I don't think we'll ever see the "driven" Tiger we knew in the past.

Tiger on Thursday: TV or not TV?

Hey,  If you are interested in Golf, especially the Masters- TUNE IN.
If you are interested in TIGER - Tune in, cause you know he is going to make the highlights regardless of how well he plays.

I think at this point, why do we need to see him....if he isnt even in the running.  I hate that about golf actuallly.  Show me the guys who are actually in contention.....not the porn star losers who get off free because they go to sex rehab.

Tiger on Thursday: TV or not TV?

redwings1969, man you do insist on making yourself look like a jerk, don't you!

Now, perhaps you would like to share with all of us just how you know what you said to be fact! How the hell do you know that Tiger "deliberatly hurt his family on a daily basis"?

Let me give you a little hint, hot shot. Lack of knowledge in any specific area often results in a person having a grossly simplified and errorneous understanding of what is really involved. Take, for example, you ideas on Tiger.

Tiger on Thursday: TV or not TV?

redwings1969, I have a suggestion for you. Get some facts, any facts, before responding. You, nor anybody else that writes responses here, have enough first-hand-information to have any idea as to whether or not, or to what degree, Tiger was capable of stopping what he was doing. But you, like so many others, automatically vote "GUILTY" without any facts to go on. Worse than that, you wish harm comes their way.

You called Tiger "scum". I can assure you that anyone reading that who has dealt with addictions doesn't consider Tiger 'scum'; however, I certainly can't say the same about you.

If you are only interested in TABLOID material, you might as well TUNE OUT.  The masters will keep most of that stuff to a minimum.

Like him or not, makes no difference.  He is/was a GREAT golfer.  Tune in and see some amazing shots regardless of outcome.

Hey moron !  Who in this thread referred to gay marriage with the exception of you??  Nobody knows what you're talking about dude.. get a grip.  At least wait for somebody to make that argument before you post something like that.... it makes you look stupid. Actually, it makes you look every bit the moron since you're the only one who responded.

Tiger on Thursday: TV or not TV?

What's funny is, all these people who feel Tiger is morally corrupt for what he did, what is all this based on?  Religion?  Probably 90% of the people who posted here feel that its okay for two men or two women to engage in a same sex marriage, and that's NOT okay in most Religions, so what do you people actually stand for?  You stand for the sanctity of Marriage, but ignore that the bible says that a marriage is a bond between a man and a woman.

Hey moron !  Who in this thread referred to gay marriage with the exception of you??  Nobody knows what you're talking about dude.. get a grip.  At least wait for somebody to make that argument before you post something like that.... it makes you look stupid.

What is part of this based on???  I'll tell you what and also why it is EVERYBODY'S business.  Tiger Woods did not make his fortune playing golf.  Yeah, he made more money then you or I playing golf but I know a half dozen people personally that have made more money in their businesses then Tiger has in actual tournaments in his career.   Tiger Woods made just over 90 percent of his gross revenue in endorsements ( a fact by the way, not a guess).   Why did these companies pay him big bucks??

You obviously don't understand why, so since I have a brain I'll explain.  They didn't pay him because he's the best golfer in the world, that if anything is a very small part of why they paid him.  The guy signed 70 million dollars worth of deals before he officially turned pro so it has nothing to do with that.  It has everything to do with the person he PRETENDED to be.  He pretended to be this great guy with a great personality that is so close to his mommy and daddy and a guy that believes family comes first.   Because of the pretending he did and how he fooled every marketing team of experts out there, he got rich to the tune of just over 1 billion dollars to date.  Why did they keep paying him???? Because the public was fooled as well.... that's why.  The public believed he was this saint of a man, this honest family guy that only endorses what he believes in so they bought his products.  And don't bother with the "nobody buys products just because of Tiger" crap because maybe you don't but if you truly believe that most people don't you are the biggest fools on this planet.  Nike would never dish out a hundred million dollars to one man over a few years if people aren't buying just because it's him endorsing it. They would pay a normal guy like you or me pennies compared to that instead... but they didn't and they don't.. because people get fooled.

So yeah, the public that made him rich deserves to know everything, it IS their business and certainly have a right to slam him all they want.  When you fool people like he did for so long and people put their trust in you only to fail them then yes, people will talk.  And they have every right to.....

Tiger on Thursday: TV or not TV?

How much Tiger will we see on Thursday? It depends. Will we be watching TV, or waiting in the Waffle House parking lot?
