See change: Woods committing early and often

ORLANDO -- Say this for the new and, in theory, improved Tiger Woods.

Chastened and willing to make amends with his flagging fan base, there's already been change on one positive front.
At least, so far.

In what might represent a career first, Woods on Wednesday committed early to two upcoming events, the Players Championship next month outside Jacksonville and the AT&T National in Philadelphia. For most of his career, Woods has rarely committed more than a day or two ahead of the last-call commitment deadline, set for Friday at 5 p.m. on the weekend before the tournament week.

In the three events in which he has already entered in 2010, he committed eight days or more in advance to all three. He has also filed an entry for the U.S. Open.

Last year, after Woods had strung along yet another event where it was widely assumed he would eventually commit, he was bluntly asked why he plays the cat-and-mouse game, when commiting early allows tournaments to sell more tickets, generate more money for local charities and properly prepare for any security issues he might create.

"Kind of typically what I always do," he said, dismissively.

Yeah, but why?

"I've always done it this way," he shrugged.

Not much of an answer, was it? So, as usual, he left everybody to read between the lines and divine his real motivations. With Woods, control and money are usually part of the decision-making equation.

The perception is simple: Woods has been unwilling to let his image be used for free in advertising campaigns -- he doesn't make any direct profit from commiting early, in his mind -- and disinclined to enter early when he might have to back out later. Early in his career, he withdrew from a tournament in Geordia in which he had he'd commited to play and was criticized. Ever since, other than at the major championships, he has rarely committed more than a day or two early.

The commitment to AT&T National over the July 4 weekend seemed at least a little surprising. First, the title sponsor forced him out as host and dropped him as a big-money endorser. Woods even had the AT&T logo displayed on his bag. However, the event benefits Woods' charitable foundation, which has reportedly found it more difficult to raise funds from donors because of the extent of his serial sex scandal.

In other words, committing gives his foundation a fighting chance to sell more tickets and maximize the impact of his appearance. I wouldn't be surprised if Woods does a few radio spots or TV interviews in the Philly market, too, an extreme rarity for him.

To date, there's one missing element in his early schedule -- Woods hasn't committed to the Memorial Tournament, where he is the defending champion., It's set for June 3-6, a month before the AT&T event.

Why are you so angry?  Insulting everybody in sight.......and not just this thread but others too.  You can't stand can't stand can't stand Freeman yet you are here all the time reading and commenting hate people who dare respond to your diatribes and fine, you live there but do you really think calling the site of the TPC "outside of Jacksonville" an insult?  Really you're that up to argue every little thing?  There have been many, many golf people who have stated the Players is outside Jacksonville and every one of them is specifically insulting Ponte Vedra?  Really?  You really think that? ........I just hope you aren't kicking your dog and beating your wife with all that anger you seem to have.  You do have positive feeling for Tim Tebow and white basketball players at least it's not all negative.

I live in St Johns County and have lived in Jacksonville, I know thw geography bozo, goodness, son. You fail to understand my point - your buddy Elling has this thing for Tiger and this part of Florida - to refer to Ponte Vedra, Florida as "outside Jacksonville" is an insult.

Or perhaps he was just trying to help the intellectually disadvantaged, like yourself.

jdawson4321, What did Tiger woods do to you?  Did he sleep with your wife? Was a friend of yours one of the mistresses?  Who are you to judge how long someone should take off from their profession after making a mistake?  How dare you label all of his "friends, fellow golfers, advertisers, actors, professional athletes, and sports commentators" as "slime balls".  What are you doing looking at a sports webpage?  Have you ever considered Elin may not want him back no matter how hard he may try?  Your suggestions are ridiculous!!!
Do I agree with what Tiger did? NO.  Do I think he owes me an apology? NO...get off your high horse....What possible good could come out of Tiger taking 2 years off from professional golf? Are you NUTS...we are already in a recession and if you think Tiger taking time off wouldn't effect  millions of innocent people then you need your head examined?  All I can say is I will pray for you....Nobody is perfect sporto...

See change: Woods partying Early and Often

Woods hasn't changed--while his wife was off to Sweden he was out partying last night.  This guy is unbelievable.  He is wasting a lot of good will by reverting back to his playboy antics.

Tiger Woods Values Are Still Messed Up

He should of taken the year off of golf and devoted the time to repairing his relationship with his wife and children.  Tigers priorities are still about himself and enough else.  The only people who want to see him play this year are those who have a worse character than Tiger.  These are people who work Tiger's ego so they can line their pockets with green.  The real slim balls of society who disguise themselves as being up standing citizens and role models.  These people are: Friends, fellow golfers, advertisers, actors, profeesional athletes, and sports commentators.  Real scum of the earth who use Tiger for personal gain.

Tiger should be begging Elin for forgiveness everyday of his life and doing his best to make her fall in love with him all over again, everyday of his life.  Then he should take his children in his arms and tell them everyday that there is nothing more important to him than mommy and you.  Then he should go on a speaking tour and talk to young men and older men about the temptations of life and what not to do when confronted with them.  Then Tiger may be on his way back to play golf again.  This should take at least a year or two.  Then before he plays on the tour he should sign all his wealth, every bit of it, over to his wife and children so he is not buying gold digging women fancy things with his and his families money.  The second reason he should sign all his wealth over to his family is beacause he is sorry for the embarassment he has caused his wife, children, and mom.

Tiger doesn't look real sorry.  He looks sorry for getting caught but not because of what he put his family through.  No, Tiger looks like he is trying to be in control again and that is what caused this mess in the first place.  He fails to understand that he is not in control because life is more tempting than he is strong.

Wow Chop.  That post literally is as stupid as it gets. I can't imagine why any charitable organization could possibly have trouble raising money in Tiger's name since Thanksgiving.  Can you?

Oh, also, dimwit.  In case you haven't been there or ever looked at a map. Ponte Vedra is  "outside Jacksonville"  Maybe you should go back to school yourself and study GEOGRAPHY.
