Sure, PGA Tour rookie Matt Every got his booking mugshot splashed in the local paper.
But one of his accused accomplices was the most noteworthy of the trio of men arrested for marijuana possession this week while working at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill.
Every is a first-year PGA Tour player and was in a hotel room Tuesday night at the Isle Casino Hotel near the TPC Deere Run course when authorities were summoned after a strong marijuana odor began emanating from a guest room. According to police, Every, 26, and two other men present in the room were questioned and arrested on misdemeanor possession charges and booked at Scott County Jail in nearby Iowa.
The other two men are professional caddies, including 49-year-old Mike Hicks, an accomplished veteran who was on the bag when the late Payne Stewart won the U.S. Open in unforgettable fashion at Pinehurst in 1999. A veteran caddie with more than two decades of experience who has worked with several top players over the years, Hicks leaped into Stewart's arms after the latter made a clutch 15-footer to beat Phil Mickelson by a stroke.
Hicks, who lives in North Carolina, has also caddied for Scott Hoch, Jonathan Byrd and Steve Stricker, among others. The third man, Derek Mason, 28, is Every's caddie and also was arrested and charged.
The trio was booked and released in less than an hour after making bail and Every shot a 1-under 71 in his opening round Thursday. He is No. 137 on the money list.
Hicks' booking mugshot, released by the Scott County Jail, is below.
