BETHESDA, Md. -- Forget father knows best.

They transposed a couple of letters.

More like father knows bets.

According to a report published Monday in a U.K. newspaper, Gerry McIlroy stands to make a small fortune along with some friends if his son, Rory, wins the British Open by 2014.

The elder McIlroy, who worked three jobs at one point to help fund his son's blossoming career placed a wager with three friends, each putting up 100 pounds at odds of 500-1 that McIlroy, then 15, would win the British title within the next decade. Gerry stands to make 200,000 pounds for his share from the bet, placed seven years ago.

The new world No. 4 set or matched 12 U.S. Open records with his runaway win on Sunday.

McIlroy has held at least a share of the lead at the past three majors contested and won Sunday at Congressional Country Club in wire-to-wire fashion.

The Las Vegas Hilton on Monday listed McIlroy as the favorite next month at British Open site Royal St. George's at 6-1. Lee Westwood is 10-1 and Tiger Woods and world No. 1 Luke Donald re both 15-1.

Gerry McIlroy was on hand at Congressional all week to watch his son, now 22, become the youngest U.S. Open winner in 88 years.

Maybe some fair weather folks with short term memories may forget quickly what Tiger has already acomplished, but most golf fans in the States are not in that category.  That being said,I am very happy to see this young fellow do well and win his first major championship.  Being a US national with an Irish heritage, I am glad to see what he did and the Other Mac do last year as well.

I still want my home country to at least best the Internationals in Ryder Cup competition; I hate it when Europe takes that cup.  As far as Tiger goes, there is no current player with even 1/2 the majors he owns. If Tiger can overcome his current baggage and injuries and return to some resemblance of past glory,  he will at least be competetive with this current youth movement.

How sad are the World Rankings in golf when Rory McIlroy is ranked 4th with only 3 career pro wins?

To summarize the artical being a gambler myself: Rory father braging about his son winning the Britsh Open by his 25 birthday, so his friends told him to put is money where is mouth is, so he did negotiating a 500 to 1 bet with four different friends.  There will be no juice since this is a side bet between friends, something that happens all the time on the golf course and in the bars.

I thought it was illegal to bet on yourself or your son in golf. Looks like the rules in Europe work alittle differently.

Many people have said that Rory is the next Tiger Woods. Really? How does a 22 year old white Scottish lad blaze new trails in golf like Tiger Woods did. Woods brought excitement to the game by showing the whole world that "you don't have to be an overweight guy to play golf". Woods brought a new level of dedication and preparation to golf. He lifted weights to work become stronger while the other golfers lifted beers bottles and their large guts.Woods was able to get tournaments to increase their payouts and also got many children from the inner city to take up golf.

Those who say Rory will be the next Tiger Woods is like saying "yeah, we don't know any better so we will annoint any young golfer as the next great phenom".

Rory is just the latest flash in the pan. Mark my words. One year from now you will not remember who Rory is. Do you gusy still remember Rocco Mediate...the guy Tiger beat in the sudden death playoff a few years back?

The math is very simple..."placed a wager with three friends, each putting up 100 pounds at odds of 500-1 "

That is 4 total people putting up 100 pounds at 500-1. That comes out to $200,000...still don't see why the dad gets it all though.

Agreed Teres, the math doesn't add up, at least as far as I understanding odds and betting--which isn't very far.  Unless as the other poster said, McIlroy Sr. gets all the loot.  And another thing: while i wouldn't kick 200K pounds to the curb, does that really constitute a "fortune", even a samll one?

They would win a total of 200,000 pounds so I guess the other three friends wouldnt get the money. Kinda cool he worked 3 jobs for his kid though.

Could somebody explain the math here.  100 pounds at 500-1 should work out to 50,000 pounds if you win, minus the "house edge."  How did it get to 200,000?
