ORLANDO, Fla. -- Attention flamers, vicious posters and other reputation-savaging knuckleheads who hide behind the anonymity of chatroom walls while tossing grenades at others:

Phil Mickelson is fighting back.

In a move that could bring unintended light to a very personal issue, Mickelson filed suit in Canada to learn the identity of a person who has been ripping him on the Internet.

According to the Courthouse News Service, Mickelson alleges in the complaint that "the postings suggest that plaintiff has an illegitimate child, that his wife has affairs and other similar vexatious statements that are absolutely untrue and, simply put, vicious.”

Mickelson has long been dogged by wild and absurd rumors, and his wife Amy has even been known to make jokes with friends about them.

But nobody’s kidding around this time.

"I'm all for freedom of speech, but I won't tolerate defamation, and so I've got a great attorney who's on it," he said after the first round of the Phoenix Open on Thurday.

Mickelson sought and was granted by San Diego Superior Court the right to subpoena Yahoo! for information about the identities of two screen names, "Fogroller" and "Longitude," and Yahoo! responded with Fogroller's Internet protocol address, which is registered to a Videotron subscriber, according to the Courthouse News report.

The news report states that Videotron's attorney said Mickelson needs a court order for the company to provide him with the information. In the filing, Mickelson seeks the court order.

"It is urgent, and in the best interest of justice, to accurately identify the person using the 'Fogroller' pseudonym and posting these offensive and defamatory statements, in order to stop the dissemination of false and wrongful statements about the plaintiff and obtain reparation for the prejudice already suffered," the complaint states, according to Courthouse News.

Reparation, of course, is the legal euphemism that broadly means "blood and money."

It is just a Yahoo account, who in the world is seriously being defamed by the internets people anyways?  Going after them implies actual truth to their statements, otherwise nothing on the internet is ever accurate infomation anywyas.

This is Brilliant.  I am a Canadian and I can assure you even though im a Weir and even Ames fan, who doesn't like Phil? All us Northerners aren't like these wastes of quality air space that hide behind their screens in their parents basement with no job.  I am suprised the name wasn't 'unregistered' rather than have a name at all. Cowards.  Good on ya Lefty I hope you get what it is you want out of these losers, I can just see them pissing themselves now!

It’s truly appalling for members of any blogging community
to over extend their views into an untruthful depiction of another person’s
character. However sensational journalism sells, there are large percentages of
people that find extreme joy in the demise of other people. With the conductors
of this crap partly covered under the First Amendment of our Constitution “Freedom
of Speech”.

Phil, in my estimation is doing the right thing and
protecting his family, and please by no means misconstrue the fact that I’m a
lawyer, but he has an uphill battle. He has an uphill battle by nature do to
his Public Status ruling as defined by the Supreme Court.

“Where the plaintiff in a
action is a private citizen who is not in the public eye, the law extends a
lesser degree of constitutional protection to the statements at issue. Public
figures voluntarily place themselves in positions that invite close scrutiny,
whereas private citizens have a greater interest in protecting their
reputation. A private citizen's reputational and privacy interests tend to
outweigh free speech considerations and therefore deserve greater protection
from the courts (see Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc., 418 U.S. 323, 94 S.
Ct. 2997, 41 L. Ed. 2d 789 [1974]).”

Hogs, it's not "even on this site". Most days it's "especially on this site". I haven't seen him posting in a while, but a prime example is that "alwaysgimme" moron who evidently would have liked to stand in line along with the chippies to get some of Tiger. LOL However, he libeled Phil with virtually every post he made. Some of the stuff posted on this site about Joe Paterno is just sickening. It's hard to find a comment stream under virtually any story on this site that isn't filled with trollish libel. The mods here don't do NEARLY ENOUGH to rid their site of this trash. It has only gotten worse as years have gone by. I used to enjoy reading other sports fans opinions here. However it is getting to the point where in most cases it just isn't worth the effort to wade through 20 moronic troll posts for every real contribution.

Bad jokes aside... Good for Phil.  Let's put a face to the dbag and start going through his/her life.

It's one thing to be an "internet tough guy" but to go after a golfer? SERIOUSLY?
