There are a few rules in sports trash talking that everyone should know. Don’t predict a big victory unless your name is Joe. Don’t say anything you don’t have to say if you’re a superstar, just go do it.

And don’t push Tiger Woods’ buttons the week of a match-play event.

Stephen Ames knows this. Back in 2006 at at this same event, a smile crept across his face when he mentioned, “Anything can happen when [Tiger’s] hitting the golf ball.” Woods went on to beat the man 9 & 8, the biggest defeat in the history of the tournament.

This week, Tiger is no No. 1 seed, but he is still playing a rather unknown in Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, who broke our third rule of trash talking already.

When asked about his first-round match this week with Tiger, Fernandez-Castano said he thinks he could take him.

"I think he’s beatable,” Fernandez-Castano said. "Of course, I need to play good. That’s all I can think about and that’s all I’m going to try on Wednesday, just try playing my best game and hope that he doesn’t play his best."

Now, it isn’t the smartest thing to get Tiger riled up at his best format. Sure, Woods isn’t the same golfer as he was when he treated Ames like a pro-am partner, but I think match play is something that could really work for Tiger. It allows him to have a loose hole or two, and he could still make a bunch of birdies and advance far in this tournament.

That said, would anyone be totally surprised if this Spaniard, who has never finished in the top-30 of a major, beat him? Is that something that would floor the golf community? I say no.

Tiger’s golf game is unpredictable, and if anything, those words Ames spoke six years ago ring true even more today. Anything could happen when Tiger is swinging the club, good or bad.

At this event, it’s more about the actions of Woods than the words of his opponent.

Tiger Woods' opponent says 'he's beatable'

Did he really say that? Or is CBS just trying to help their ratings.  Because tiger can't automally, single handedly, push their ratings through the roof at the present time.  Not many area bosses will have to worry about workers not showing up for work tomorrow.  Remember tiger is still sleeping. Come on man.

That kid should just have kept his mouth shut and play golf.  True anything can happen, and usually does.  But you still have to play one of the most recent feared golfer's in the history of golf.  And you have never finished in the top 30 in any event you have played?  Come-on man. What's the old saying? Don't wake a sleeping tiger!!  I would be shaking in my boots, as they fill up with au water. On the first tee.  However this could be his Joe Namath moment. Good Luck kid. What's his name again?

Tiger Woods' opponent says 'he's beatable'

Tiger is a shell of the man he used to be, especially since the former Ms. Tiger cleaned him out, but lets not get too carried away here folks. Tiger shouldn't be a top 5 seed, and thank goodness the TV exec's weren't doing the seeding or else he would have been there, but it seems that they got this one right. He's were he should be, 19, and yea, he's beatable, although it isn't wise to antagonize any opponent before a match, let alone a former big dog who still might have a bite or two left. A few years ago that strategy would have been stupid, but it might not back fire on this hyphenated, slightly less than a real man, Spaniard. Woods might get all pissy and start pressing right from the 1st tee. Next thing you know he's pushing it right, and left, and right, left, right, and before you know it Tiger could be walking straight to his car - no interviews - no nothing. It certainly will add a little excitment to the match.

Tiger Woods' opponent says 'he's beatable'

Wood'd defeat of Ames pales in comparison to the punishment Lefty laid on Tiger. We may watch golf for the next fifty years and never see an eleven stroke beatdown in a head to head Sunday pairing again. Only Faldo's destruction of Norman comes anywhere close. So Tiger was once the king of match play huh? Well, Honus Wagner was once the king at shortstop. What on earth does the past have to do with the present? The last three years has seen Wood's collapse in this event. And yes, this was before Elin whooped him, so that excuse won't fly. I'm sure Fernanzdez-Castano's knees are knocking with fear. I'm surprised he doesn't forfeit, because Tiger's biceps are too big. Don't know about the biceps, but Wood's bird legs look like one of those Pink Flamingos you see standing on a lawn. Lucky he can wear trousers to cover them up. Otherwise he would have to wear baggy style basketball shorts to cover up the skinny legs. It works for those guys.

Tiger Woods' opponent says 'he's beatable'

Ahhh it's Nytofla......The proverbial zit on the arsehole of humanity.  Woods was within a 1/2 point of being worst  equal for the USA team and you claim it as a personal sucess for Wood The Liar.

I trust you have  a strong tongue, as the competition to kneel at the derriere of The Anointed One is fierce.

I don`t get it ?? What`d he say wrong ?

What exactly did Castanosay wrong ? Was he supposed to say"sure hope Tiger dosen`t whip me TO badly". I don`t see anything wrong in expressing a postive outlook and giving yourself a chance going into the match.
Hell, have you SEEN Tiger`s golf swing these days ? Poor bastard looks like me out thereFrown lol

Tiger Woods' opponent says 'he's beatable'

"I'd have to play good, but I think he's beatable."  That implies that you think you maybe, possibly have a chance if you're on your game.  Considering it's a head-head match, if you don't feel that way, why even show up?

This is the farthest thing from a taunt.

Yeah, he has been money when the pressure is on. So outrageous to suggest he might be human and lose. Where have you been for the last two years?
