Haney: Tiger considered becoming a Navy SEAL

Judging by his brains, good looks and killer instinct, it seemed when Tiger Woods came into our lives he had the ability to be anything he wanted. Sure, he was a golfer since basically birth, but his larger than life persona made it seem like he could be a CEO, professional baseball player or even the president.

But one of the things you probably didn’t expect to hear is that at one point, Tiger seriously considered becoming a Navy SEAL.

Golf Digest has some excerpts from Hank Haney’s tell-all Tiger book, and one of the quotations from Hank says that Tiger once told him he seriously was considering leaving golf to join one of the most elite forces in our military.

"Tiger was seriously considering becoming a Navy SEAL. I didn't know how he'd go about it, but when he talked about it, it was clear he had a plan....I thought, Wow, here is Tiger Woods, greatest athlete on the planet, maybe the greatest athlete ever, right in the middle of his prime, basically ready to leave it all behind for a military life."

As Mr. Wall points out, there isn’t exactly a time indicated in Haney’s quotes, but to say “the middle of his prime” meant that it had to have been when Woods was winning all those majors, not when his personal life was in shambles.

That, in itself, is pretty incredible because it shows that Tiger really thought about doing this for no other reason than to serve his country.

Tiger’s dad, Earl, was a Green Beret in the United States Army so it isn’t like Tiger didn’t have a military background, but it’s incredible to hear he even thought to do this with the level of fame and success he reached at this certain point.

Haney: Tiger considered becoming a Navy SEAL

Why are most of the comments hamering Woods? He didn't write the book, he didn't claim that he could (or even wanted to) be a SEAL, and no one commenting even knows if he ever made the statements.

Haney: Tiger considered becoming a Navy SEAL

Tiger Woods was one of the best-conditioned ever to play in the PGA, and in the context of the golf tour he's got Tebow-esque guns on him.  But arm strength, accurate strokes, and personal fame won't make one a Navy SEAL.  Tiger Woods' body wouldn't be able to withstand even one set of downs in the NFL, much less a full season.

Now Pat Tillman, on the other hand, could have made a worthy applicant for the SEALs.  And they might even have rooted inside for him to pass the test.  I expect Tiger would have fallen far short in his effort, though.  And they might even have taken special pleasure from flushing him.

Hubris, thy name is Eldrick.  And Haney ought to take a breath mint after kissing Tiger's behind so much.

Considering how frail Tiger was mentally he had ZERO chance of becoming a SEAL.  He was "Mr. Intensity" when things were going right, but the true measure of a man is how they react to adversity.....he is still floundering.  Being former military and knowing quite a few SEAL wannabe's who didn't even make the cut from bootcamp, it's an insult the way the quote is made and passed along as if Tiger could just choose to do it and it would come to pass.

Sorry for previous posts.
Just read excerpt and Haney states that Tiger is greatest athelete on the Planet. Really cuz Golf requires someone to be in top physical condition to do their living. Man Boobs Mickelson....really.   Did I just get a nipple slip?   Oh wait....he has biscuits

Omaha65,

No one can understand what it is like. Movies do not give it justice.

Does Hank Haney even know any Navy Seals? Why would he make these remarks? I like what Tiger has done with his career and although he has derailed his chase for the Nicklaus record, it is unlikely that he would have ever stated this. If he has, shame on him for making these statements. Seals do not talk about about being a Seal.

This is newsworthy?  He obviously took the easy road by avoiding sand for a career when Seals get wet and sandy almost daily. He would have run the bell very early had he given it a shot. Sea, Air & Land rescue is considerably more difficuly then the game of golf. Even the mental aspect is 10 x more challenging.

What a joke this is. I have a family member who served in the SEALs for 24 years (since retired). He was a member of SEAL Team 6 among other things. I can assure you that you don't just go ahead and become a Navy SEAL.

Woods is a puke and he would have been run out by the others so fast he wouldn't have even gotten wet.

People need to know that Navy SEALs are not just in top mental and physical condition and have the ability to make split second life and death decisions, they are also men of honor and a person like Woods wouldn't make it through the first cut based on his character flaws alone.

Woods' father was retired military, so Woods has a "military background"?

What next, a Purple Heart for Elin's Thanksgiving clubbing?

exactly...if he wanted he may have been able to...unlikely though....takes a different type of person to do...Eldrick does not have the stuff it takes...otherwise he would not have let distractions change his focus. I am out.
