Norman passes on PGA Championship

Three weeks in succession for a part-time player turned out to be plenty. The honeymoon had to end sometime.

Greg Norman, riding higher than at any point this decade, has declined to play in next week’s PGA Championship at Oakland Hills outside Detroit.

A PGA of America spokesperson confirmed Monday that Norman, after remaining undecided for several days regarding the bid, has elected to pass on the special invitation extended by the organization.

With seven holes to play, the resurgent 53-year-old was tied for the lead at the British Open at Royal Birkdale and finished tied for third, then rallied to a tie for fifth on Sunday at the Senior British Open at Royal Troon.

Norman is set to play this week at the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado. Next week’s PGA would have made four weeks in a row for a player who had not made a cut in three previous starts on the regular PGA Tour this year prior to his Birkdale breakout, which conjured images of his golfing prime, when he was ranked the No. 1 player in golf.

Norman passes on PGA Championship

This probably wouldn't have been news had Norman played to the script last week.  Actually, I don't really know why it's news anyway.
