Red Wings showing their age

Talk about an ideal situation for the Phoenix Coyotes.

Here they were facing elimination on the road and going up against the NHL’s best team since the Olympics too. Their captain was still missing, their special teams a disaster in the last couple of games and they were coming off a decisive loss at home to a veteran team that had been to the last two Stanley Cup Finals and won one of them.

Need more? Well there was the monkey of not having won a playoff round since moving to Phoenix sitting squarely on their backs too. It all added up to the Coyotes again being in that “us against the world” place where they have spent this entire improbable season and used so effectively. And naturally Phoenix rose up and responded the way it has throughout, pounding the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 to force a seventh and deciding game back in the desert on Tuesday night.

The Coyotes played their best 60-minute game of this great series while outside a few spurts Detroit may have played its worst. In theory that shouldn’t mean all that much considering the way the momentum has shifted from night to night, but in this case, there a potentially relevant carry-over effect that might be relevant because it involves a short turnaround time for the Red Wings and travel.

Detroit look sluggish last week losing Game 3 at home after evening the series with a spirited effort two nights earlier in Phoenix, but rebounded nicely in their own confines a couple of nights later and then turned in another good effort when there were two days before Game 5 back in Phoenix.

But less than 48 hours later the older Red Wings looked more like the dead Wings, and for all intents and purposes took themselves out of the game with a slow start they could not recover from. Phoenix came out skating hard and fast and sent a message of aggression early, nearly paying for it by taking three penalties before the game was five minutes old. Still the Coyotes not only survived, they took control and they took the crowd out of the game when Lauri Korpikoski stripped Brad Stuart of the puck and raced in to beat Jimmy Howard for a shorthanded goal.

From then on it was the Ilya Byrzgalov show. The Phoenix netminder was unflappable, square to the shooters covering the net with his big body and giving more than a few examples of why he is a Vezina finalist this season. He was zoned-in from the outset and was the difference in his team’s ability to kill off those early critical penalties, frustrating the Red Wings enough to give his team’s offense a chance to explode.

Yes, explode. That’s not a word often associated with the Coyotes attack, especially since they scored only once in the last two games and had not converted their last 19 power plays coming in. But with their own 40-year-old geezers Mathieu Schneider and Robert Lang exacting some revenge on their former team, Phoenix picked up three goals with the man advantage and that proved to be the difference.

Then again, Phoenix was never really threatened. Stuart’s goal early in the second period narrowed Detroit’s deficit to 2-1, but the Coyotes got a pair back before the teams headed into the dressing room to put things away. And unlike some teams that have tried to sit back on leads in these playoffs and paid the price – hello Ottawa, Montreal and Buffalo – Phoenix stuck to its game plan in the third period, having its defensemen continue to jump up and push the play and for the most part, forcing Detroit to go 200 feet to get any chances.

The Red Wings have to go a lot further now because the Coyotes have already come a long way.

Maybe I am a punk, who knows? But at least I'm not a hypocrite.

Believe me JDR13, if we were to meet, there would be zero talking. Punks like you only understand force.

Red Wings showing their age

By the way, here's a little reminder of how this all began. Since you seem determined now to try and elevate yourself above us knuckle draggers by claiming all we do is insult people due to a lack of self-esteem, and that "insults and name calling are not legitimate replacements for a reasoned argument".

"Wow! redwings1969, did you go to college to come up with such a reasoned argument and response? Oh, that's right. You are a Thug Wing fan and reason never enters your tiny, little mind. Just like the rest of them, (and I know a lot of them, living here in Detroit.)"

There's nothing that spells "win" like getting to someone to the point where they feel the need to write a War and Peace length response. Thanks for playing.

I will address the Allen Park comment thought, just because of how false it is. As I said before, it's obvious you've never been here, and I think it's funny that now you're actually lying about it. I'd be happy to give you a tour anytime though, just shoot me a private message, and I'll gladly meet up with you. That way you can have chance to come out from behind your computer and talk face to face.

Now I'm sure you'll just respond with more talk about "ignorance" and "insults", but the offer is 100% legit.

So which is it?

Red Wings showing their age

JDR13 When did I ever say I cared either way about the result of the Thug Wings games. Frankly, I'm not a fan and don't care which way about them unless they are playing the Penguins and you had to add that just t try to tear medown. Sorry, that little trick won't work with me. You really are arrogant as well as ignorant, if you think you know anything about me without actually knowing me. In fact, last I checked, Allen Park is a slum compared to Pymouth, so what you have done is probably nothing more then psychological projection. You are actually the white tash living in the slum city and projecting it on to me, and yes, I've been there many times and there is a reason why people refer to places like Allen Park as little Detroit, because it looks just like Detroit, run down and ugly and home to the real white trash, namely, you.
I've noticed your Modus Operandi. You lurk on these boards waiting for someone to make slight mistakes or typos, like "site" instead of "cite", or, in my case, saying I am from Detroit, instead of actually saying the Detroit area, (which a person operating with a normal brain would conclude,)and then you jump all over it, never really placing any real logical argument at all, and only using ad hominenn attacks, e.g.,  name calling and insults like white trash. Do you realize insults and name calling are not legitimate replacements for a reasoned argument. In fact, they are actually logical fallicies, but I would never expect such a small mind like yours to understand that. That is why you have to resort to such methods after all.
The fact is, I doubt you would be able to pass a test from a freshmen level philosophy course, so your opinion of me based on ignorance and hate has a zero effect upon me. I recognize your simple mind and the simple tricks you try to pull over on people to make up for your obvious lack of self-esteem just to pump your chest and make yourself FEEL superior over others. Do you drag your knuckles as well? Probably. The sad truth is you know you are not superior, because if you could make a sound, reasoned, and cogant argument you would. You don't, which implies you can't or you would. Can you follow this or have I lost your simple mind?

Do I sound like white trash to you now?

To anyone living in Allen Park, MI other then JDR13, I hold no animosity towards the city or anyone from there. I am only specifically trying to insult JDR13 with those cmments. If anyone other then JDR13 is offended, I am sorry for the insults anyone else may feel, though that was not my intent.

Red Wings showing their age

bookworm2112,  people in michigan don't normally say they live "in Detroit" unless they actually do, nice attempt at backpeddling on your part though. As far as Allen Park is concerned, you've obviously never been here. I can see I'm probably dealing with white trash at this point, so I won't waste anymore of my time. Sorry the Wings ruined your night yesterday. Doesn't it suck when you're rooting soooo hard for a team to lose, and then they win?

and their ability to pass the puck, shoot, hit, kill penalities, and win face-offs (okay, they lost one).  clearly the better team was wearing white last night, but give the 'yotes credit for taking them to 7 games.  no one i know is ambivalent about the wings--you either hate them or love them.  i hope the 'yotes get there some day.  good luck with the sharks--i don't like them either.

I am not involved in this battle, but it is pretty funny when you try and rip someone for being ignorant and use improper grammar and spelling, lol. Kinda lose your argument that way.

Red Wings showing their age

Just getting back to you JDR. Thank you for grading my post. I did mean "you're". Thanks for taking the time to point out this serious mistake. For the record it appears my basic spelling is fine, it was my grammar that was incorrect. Please accept my apology. Let me try it again. You're ignorant and arrogant and another word that starts with an A but my spelling is not so good, can someone help me...

Red Wings showing their age again mr. ignorant. Tell how many Red Wing fans actually live within Detroit's borders? I would venture to say very little becaus they are probably Piston fans. I live in the METROPOLITAN Detroit area. Just because Allen Park is little Detroit gives you no more claim to the city, either. Damn, the level of ignorant Thug wing fans can be astounding. Like Ozzy says, "I can't believe what empty heads can achieve!"
