Sharks answering character questions

Two wins to start do not a series victory make, but where the San Jose Sharks are concerned, it means that it’s at least time to sit up and take notice.

Especially since the wins have come against the Detroit Red Wings. Hey, Joe Thornton even scored a goal and his erstwhile linemates Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau made critical contributions too. And if that doesn’t tell you there’s something different going on here, well then maybe nothing will.

With San Jose’s much-maligned big center finding the back for the first time in these playoffs, and deep into third period no less, the Sharks were able to complete a comeback and win 4-3 to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals as the series shifts back to Detroit.
That’s five wins in a row in this post-season for the Sharks who are actually starting to look like the team everyone thinks it should be.

Truth is that given their previous playoff washouts, no team in the NHL came into this postseason with more expectations of failure than San Jose. And the Sharks didn’t ease any of those doubts by dropping two of the first three in the opening round to heavy underdog Colorado.

The second loss to the Avalanche in particular brought out the cynics because it came in overtime and on a shot that defenseman Dan Boyle put in his own net after the Sharks had badly outplayed the Avalanche. But instead of having a debilitating effect on San Jose, the Sharks found a way to put it behind them quickly and they haven’t looked back since.

“We’re resilient,” Boyle said. “A lot of believe don’t see us that way, but here in the room we do.”

And the Sharks are proving it so far against Detroit, in no small part because Joe Pavelski  is making like Rocket Richard with the way he’s scoring goals. But San Jose is winning puck battles, getting some solid work in goal from Evgeni Nabokov, who has his own set of doubters, and taking advantage of the opportunities, most notably the inordinate number of penalties Detroit has drawn, especially the 5-on-3s.

And they are answering a lot of questions about themselves in the process, just not getting too far ahead of themselves.

“We’re going to have to be on our toes there, because the matchups were in our favor here and they won’t be over there,” Boyle said.

“The worst thing we can do is exhale because they’re such a dominant team.”

The kind the Sharks are starting to be.

Sharks answering character questions

Yeah, it was pretty gutless when Brad Stuart jumped on and then pummeled Joe Pavelski in front of an official near the end of the game  (no call).  And also gutless when Heatley got pushed into the goalie -- intentionally -- and the refs made the make-up call at an ideal moment for the Red Wings.  It's a conspiracy, I tell ya!  But if the refs somehow *are* favoring the Sharks at home v. the Red Wings?   Welcome to our world, Wings fans, because that's how it looks to us nearly time we play you at the Joe.

Sharks answering character questions

Yes they have answered some of their character questions but you are an idiot Wes if you think that those two games were not handed to the Sharks. Anyone who is yapping about Red Wings fans complaining blah blah blah is also an idiot because the complaining only started when the league decided that they were going to ruin the sport that so many of us real fans have loved for years. You see the difference between real fans and idiots who run their mouths is that if the calls were that brutal in our favor we would still say there was something wrong with the reffing. As for Detroit fans always complaining, that’s bullsquat, we complain when we see our team being beaten by the refs and not the other team on the ice. Where is the article on the insane amount of phantom calls being made in the NHL playoffs this year? Not just in this series but in all series. And a side note on the character of the Sharks, they might have answered some calls but they are going to be getting a few more for all the gutless diving they are doing. Gutless.

Canadians are losing interest in hockey

Again and again I am tired of the officials deciding the fate of playoff games.
The Canadian teams bring in about 60% of the league revenue and when
hockey games are decided like this hockey will lose the real hockey fans.
A real hockey game could of broke out  between the sharks and wings if
the officials didn't believe they where above the game. What a farce. Probably
the last game I'll watch. Fishing season opens.

New NHL?

Wes - I know SJ has answered some of the questions about their team by winning the first two games of this series.  But you failed to even mention the elephant in the room, which was the officiating.  We've all heard that the New NHL will call more penalties in the playoffs, but that game last night was a travesty.  Might as well just give the Red Wings a red card and let them play a man down all game.  If that is an example of the new NHL count me out.  I heard there were re-runs of Jag on TBS that wont be quite as irritating.

Take the refs out of the equation and this series is 2-0 Wings. The refs have handed SJ both games on a silver platter. Worst officiating Ive ever seen and that includes 100s of peewee games. This kind of ineptitude sure does make a strong case for the Bettman has an agenda crowd. I also noticed all the phantom calls against Detroit came from one official. Someone may want to check his whereabouts  and phone calls over the last few months and see if he has ties to gamblers.

When the TV announcers from Versus TSN and the Wings radio team all question the legitimacy of the calls then theres something there that needs to be looked at. This series should be 2-0 Wings. Instead we have 2-0 refs. What a joke.

You an idiot wes.  It's easy to be dominant when the ice is tilted at a 45 degree angle in your favor.  Detroit spent 20 minutes in the box.  St. Mary's girls school for the blind could have beat Detroit tonight.
