Shane Doan isn’t considered a dirty player by any stretch of the imagination, although he has been one of the league’s most physical forwards for the last dozen years. And the Coyotes captain proved it by taking out Anaheim forward Dan Sexton on Sunday night.

Problem was that Doan came at Sexton from behind and made contact with the Anaheim player’s head, which is something everyone around the league is pretty sensitive about these days. All you have to do is check out the roster of star players who are now or have been sidelined by concussions to understand why.

Sexton managed to escape that fate on the play. In fact he wasn’t hurt and Doan’s wasn’t penalized, but unfortunately for the Phoenix player, there is video of everything these days. This one made Doan’s hit look unnecessary because it came well after the Ducks player had rid himself of the puck.

So after a review today, the league decided to hit the Coyotes franchise player even harder by suspending him for the first time in his career. Doan got three games, which is one more than Chicago’s Niklas Hjalmarsson got last week for a much more dangerous hit last week. That left Buffalo’s Jason Pominville out with a concussion, but the league is raising the ante by coming down hard on a well respected player like Doan, particularly in a debatable situation like this.

Doan said he didn’t intend on delivering a blindside hit. But it happened did and the league wants players to realize it shouldn’t. Maybe seeing a leader like Doan pay this kind of price will drive that home.

Man , get  off  the " Bertizzi / Doan  "  crap . You  people  doesn't  evn  know   what  your  talking  about  with   that  one . I  don't  know  what  game  you  people  are  looking  at . That  Duck  had  his  head  up , and  was  watching  his pretty  pass , when  Doan  hit  him . By  the  way , his  shoulder  came  up  to  this  head , he  didn't  jump , or  raise  his  shoulder , it  was  a  clean  hit . Late  you  say ?  The  league  told  the  refffs  to  count  to  3 , it  the  hit  is  after  that , it's  a  late  hit . Now , he  was  right  there . I  seen  a  " 1 , t "  and  hit , you  can't  say  that it  was  late . But , then  again , you  people  wasn't  the  same  game . The  rule  that  the  league  came  up  with  is  a  joke . Giving  Doan  3  games , that  didn't  hurt  anybody  , VS   the  hit  that  Hajl whatever  his  name  is   who  did  give  Pommer  of  the  Sabres  a  concussion , only  2  games . It's  nothing  but  a  joke . And ,  you  people  say " keep  your  head up " , that's  a  good  idea , but , it  you  get  blindsided ,  it  wasn't  do  squat  for  you . Even  when  you  put  up  your  head , you  can  get  hit . It's  on  the  player  who  knows  when  you  blindsided , and  put  on  the  brakes . The  league  needs  to  punish that  player  who  blind  sided   a  player . And  really  punish  them , not " 2  games " , that's  an  insult , to  the  fans  and  the  player  who  was  hurt .

from someone who played hockey 21 years.

The kid from the Ducks should have been more aware, but that doesn't make this hit legal.  It was a late hit and it should be called.  Doan has always been an edgy player and pain to play against and occasionally those guys step over the line.  This was one of those times, doesn't make him a bad guy... it's just hockey.  The NHL is cracking down on blindside head contact and it wasn't the most severe example of that but nonetheless the NHL is setting precedent that if you go after a guy and you're late, hit high, hit from an angle that doesn't allow him to defend himself that you will pay a price.  Player safety is important, let's not forget that.

I for one don't want to take hitting out of hockey.  As long as you have hitting you're going to have shots that are borderline over agressive.  Doan by any stretch of the imagination is dirty.

I know some of you Wings fans are still bitter because you don't like your prima-donas hit but Doan plays with an edge and is physcial.  You are bound to be a split second late now and then.  When a player is then they deserve to be penalized.  No problem with that.  There was no intent to hurt here, look at the video.  Nothing like what that slug Bertuzzi has done.  Who shouldn't even be allowed to play hockey until Moore can come back.  Oh wait, that's never.

The hit looked clean enough just late.  Should it have been a penalty? Sure, a suspension? No.

Evidently nobody posting here has actually looked at the video. Sexton's head was NOT down and if anything he was guilty of admiring his own pass. As for Doan, who is really turning into a hack, clearly and intentionally put his shoulder into Sexton's face. Big bad Shane Doan, the guy who last year hit an off-balance and vulnerable defenseman Jonathan Ericsson (who's knee was tore-up on the play), was laughing it up on the Coyote bench as Ericsson was being helped off the ice. A real class act.

He had no reason to even hit him period! the puck was way in front of Sexton and 5 seconds later here comes Doan. Of course you are gonna have your head down after you know u got rid of the ouck and shouldn't be expecting a hit come towards you.

this one wasn't clean.  and I'm sure he does know better, for a guy that does as much hitting as Doan does, these things are unfortunately going to happen.  I'm a Coyotes fan, and a Doan fan.  He was late this time, but I'm sure he wasn't thinking 'oh, now's my chance to cheap shot this guy and send him to the hospital!'

Except that Bertuzzi was being investigated by the Police after the incident, and the victim was out cold after being punched from behind in the temple, and that the entire game skidded to a halt out of disbelief that someone would act so violently.

Yeah, they're like clones those two.

good post.

Clean!  Are you kidding me?  The guy passed the puck and took THREE strides before he was hit.....no place in hockey and Doan should know better!  PS:  I'm not a Ducks fan either.
