Flyers have Habs figured out

Posted on: May 1, 2008 12:09 am

If the Flyers are indeed playing with fire, they've learned how to avoid getting burned. And unless the Montreal Canadiens can find a way to add some more heat, this Eastern Conference semifinal will end without the need to return to Philadelphia.

The teams are heading back to Montreal for Game 5 on Saturday with the Canadiens on the brink of elimination mainly because the Flyers have managed to stymie the league's top offense -- particularly the power play and its triggerman Alex Kovalev -- in a way no other team has this season. Goalie Martin Biron, an early playoff MVP candidate, obviously has a lot to do with it because the Canadiens are getting their chances, but the Flyers are clearing rebounds, getting pucks out of their zone efficiently and winning board battles and key faceoffs.

The Flyers are also getting offense from a variety of sources and when you put it all together, it adds up to a team that seems to have gotten into Montreal's heads.

That's one reason Habs coach Guy Carbonneau decided to shake things up tonight by replacing Carey Price in goal with Jaroslav Halak, the Canadiens other rookie goalie. Halak didn't make the coach regret his decision, although he probably would have liked to have the game's first goal by R.J. Umberger back, but ultimately he didn't get any better support from his teammates than his colleague did.

In fact Philadelphia's in-your-face approach made the team that finished first in the East look inept for large stretches of the game, so while the Flyers again gave up way too many shots (38) and failed to hold a lead they should have, they still found a way to win.

Truth is, the Flyers have been a lot more effective in this series than the stat sheets might suggest. With a little luck they would have already gained entry to the Eastern Finals instead of being just one win away because had Jeff Carter not broken his stick on a crucial late faceoff in the opener, the Canadiens would not have gotten to win that one in overtime.

The irony is that the first game was arguably Philadelphia's best overall int he series. Since then, they've been so good in so many subtle ways, the Flyers have reversed roles with the team that came in as a heavy favorite. And now they have the Canadiens heading home scratching their heads and trying to figure out just how it all came apart so quickly.

The Flyers know.

None of you stupid americans know anything about hockey. If you dont think Montreal is outplaying the flyers you are way to stupid to even comment ever about hockey.

I am not crying because i know we are going to win this series, its only 1 away win and game 5 and 7 in MTL we can win. I wouldnt be so overconfident if i was you.

Also worst to first. Last time i checked you finished 6th not 1st and it wouldnt be hard to go from worst to first if you buy Briere and Timmonen. It is a patchwork job in philly and it will show.

YO MANCINI I THINK ITS COMICAL THAT YOU ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT BAD CALLS WHEN BAD CALLS ARE THE ONLY REASON THAT  YOU GUYS ARE STILL IN THIS SERIES. LET'S NOT FORGET ABOUT THE KOVALEV HIGH STICKING CALL IN GAME ONE. HOW CAN YOUR STICK NEVER GO BELOW THE CROSSBAR AND IT NOT BE A HIGH STICKING CALL.  THE RICHARDS "KNEEING" CALL WHEN HE GOT THE GUY WITH HIS SHOULDER, WHICH GAVE YOU THE POWER PLAY THAT ALLOWED YOU TO PULL PRICE AND GET THE 6 ON 4. CANADIANS FANS ARE THE LAST FANS THAT NEED TO BITCH ABOUT THE CALLS. YOUR TEAM WOULD BE GOLFING RIGHT NOW IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE HORRIBLE CALLS IN THIS SERIES. BOO HOO GO CRY SOMEWHERE ELSE. YOU NEED TO THANK THE REFEREES

GO FLYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WORST TO FIRST BABY

Mancini,

There have been bad calls both ways, it evens out so stop complaining.  Timmonen got sucker punched and Umberger almost got injured by a trip and the goal off the high stick in game 1 lost it for the flyers.  The better team is winning and they Canadians have not outplayed the flyers in all 4 games.  Part of the game the flyers have been outplayed.   They do sit back on their lead sometimes, which makes it seem like they are being outplayed, but thats only cause they get quick goals.  If they Canadians were outplaying the flyers in all 4 games, they wouldn't be down 3-1.  Granted, Biron has been playing extremely well, but don't give the Canandians more credit than they deserve.

PS If the NHL/refs wanted to help out a team, they would help out the Canadians.  They would much rather see the cup go to a Canadian team and to a team that didn't have 6 suspensions.

Your right, Canadians are playing very well; so well they'll be curling 7 days a week after saturday night. It is absurd that your complaining about the officiating.  The Flyers are being called for 4 or 5 phantom calls a game since the playoffs begun.  Begin is clearly a moron.  He checked a guy (a much smaller guy) who didnt have the puck in the final minutes of a critical game.  You seem to know hockey almost as well as your coach.  Way to pull the guy who got you there because your down 2 games to 1.

No offense but this blog is just ridicules. IF CBS GIVES THIS GUY A BLOG I SHOULD HAVE ONE.

First off, The Habs have outplayed the Flyers in all 4 games. The title should have been Biron and his posts have the Habs figured out. I mean the Habs had almost 40 shots on net and 20 that missed the net. While the Flyers had 25. Not to mention the 1st 2 Flyer goals were soft. The first snuck past Halak (I have no idea he was against the post and it still went i Shortside) and the second was because Halak didnt glove it he let it go and it kareemed of the post and went right to the flyer.

Not to mention the Grabage calls that the flyers have gotten PPs for. That begin call was pretty soft. The hit was a little late but not worthy of a penalty in the playoffs. Here are some other questionable calls.

Maxim Lapierre last game hitting a guy after the guy hand passed it and they called it interference cause the ref didnt see the hand pass.

Koivu had his stick held during a PP and didnt get a call it was bogus.

In game 3 the Too many men on the ice call was terrible. There was only 5 men on the ice.

Those are just off the top of my head but 2 of them lost games for MTL.

So honestly go write a blog about baseball you stupid American. You know nothing about hockey.

Flyers have Habs figured out

Its ridiculous for you habs fans to discredit the Flyers by stating that without Biron, we might not be in this series, let alone up 3 - 1.  But last time I checked, the goalie is actually considered a player on the Flyers and a member of the team.  Subtract 1 terrible penalty call, and the Flyers have already won this series.

I JUST FIND IT HILARIOUS THAT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SERIES THE ONLY ANALYST THAT GAVE THE FLYERS A CHANCE WAS BARRY MELROSE. THE ONLY OTHER PEOPLE THAT HONESTLY BELIEVED WE WOULD GET THROUGH WERE FLYERS FANS. NOW THE CANADIANS ARE ON THE BRINK OF ELIMINATION AND THEY HAVE RESORTED TO THE SAME "DIRTY" TACTICS THAT GUY CARBONNEAU HAS CRITICIZED THE FLYERS FOR. FUNNY HOW THE OUTCOME OF A SERIES CAN CHANGE A TEAM. BY THE WAY CANADIANS FANS, STOP SAYING THAT WERE GETTING OUTPLAYED BECAUSE YOU GUYS HAVE NOT HAD A LEAD SINCE YOU WON IN OVERTIME.  TAKE THIS LIKE MEN. ADMIT WHEN YOU WERE WRONG ABOUT A TEAM AND STOP BEING BAD LOSERS.

GO FLYERS BABY!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I JUST BECAME A MEMBER TODAY SO HOW CAN I BUILD UP MY REPUTATION.
