Kelly to Tennessee?

Posted on: November 19, 2008 9:34 pm

It's getting quiet at Cincinnati. Too quiet.

This is what usually happens when something major is about to pop. Everyone is told to keep their mouths shut. Assistants are making discreet calls trying to find new jobs. Such is the case around the Cincinnati where Tennessee seemingly has settled on coach Brian Kelly as its top candidate to replace to Phil Fulmer.

This is not to say Kelly is definitely the guy but I got a couple of calls today saying his name had risen to the top at Rocky Top.

Kelly would be a great hire. He's got the attitude and ability to walk into the cauldron that is SEC recruiting. He's a quarterback specialist. Cincinnati has had to use something like four quarterbacks this season.

A couple of issues here: Cincinnati's season doesn't end until Dec. 6, so if word is out this early it could get really uncomfortable at Cincinnati which is chasing a Big East title. Can you say interim coach for the bowl game?

Kelly to Tennessee?

If Kelly bolts for Tennessee, can Cincinnati turn around and hire Phil Fullmer?

Kelly to Tennessee?

Hey Greek: First of all, your weekly Not So Top 10 column is awesome, not to mention hysterically funny.

Butch Davis would be the guy that would worry me the most as the next coach at Tennessee.

However, he seems to love Chapel Hill and may be reluctant  to throw away the work he has done there that has put him on the verge of competing for ACC championships on an annual basis (plus, the ACC is a much easier league than the SEC jungle).

Additionally, he got a ton of cash from the Browns, so I don't  think money is a big issue with him (besides the fact he already makes $2.2 million at UNC).

Brian Kelly is a great coach and would be successful anywhere, but I think he is waiting for the Notre Dame job to come open, which is likely to occur at the end of the 2009 season (unless there is drastic improvement in South Bend and I just don't see it happening).

If it turns out that Weis does survive past 2009, then Kelly can still take his pick of big-time BCS jobs that will inevitably open up.      Michigan made a huge blunder last year when they passed on Kelly.

I hear that Tennessee wants a guy that has previous coaching experience in the south and Leach's time at Kentucky with Tim Couch obviously impressed Bob Stoops enough when he was DC at Florida to hire Leach as his first OC at Oklahoma.

Since Tennessee hasn't had any kind of extended coaching search involving candidates outside of the current Tennessee staff (at the time) or their family of former players since 1964, this a new adventure for them and I just don't see them rushing this process until they feel absolutely positive that they have found the right guy, even if it takes until mid to late December.

Kelly to Tennessee?

If he can do it with Central and Grand Valley he can certainly do it in Tennessee.

Maybe he won't get the recruiting right away.  However, a big market team like Tennessee almost markets itself.  Tennessee won't stay down for long.  Don't forget that 3 years ago they had one of the top recruiting classes.  Kelly is the real deal.  He has succeeded every where he has gone.  To be honest, if Florida had a coach like Kelly they would win the NC this year and they should win.  But no.  It looks like it's going to be 'Bama and Texas Tech.  And if it isn't 'Bama than it is going to be a battle of the Big 12 for the NC.

It is not that big of stretch to say that he can win in 4 to 5 years.  He took Grand Valley from mediocre to NC in a matter of a few years.  It took Central Michigan from being just plain awful to contending for conference titles in just his 2nd season there.  And look where he is now.  He has Cincy competing for a Big East title.  Not exactly a step backwards my friend.  There are always under-recruited players out there, and he will find them as well as pick up a few blue-chippers.

I'm not talking next year, National Championship.  THAT would be a stretch.  Bowl game? Sure.  With how competitive the SEC is nothing would surprise me there.  Kelly knows the game and he knows how to teach the game.  And if his players buy into it, they will win.

Hey MoonshineRunner ,when you say with all due respect and then you say Coach Kelly at Cincinnati would be a step backwards from Coach Fulmer, were you just trying to be nice or did you just want to post something that you didn't know that much about , meaning Coach Kelly ? Kelly to Tennessee?

That is a pretty bold statement, considering Kelly has no experience recruiting in the south against major schools, and Tennessee isnt sitting on the best talent at this time.  Its probably a stretch to say USC, LSU, Ohio State, or several other teams that are currently stacked with big talent and proven coaches will win a National Championship in the next four years, and you propose Kelly can do it at Tennessee?

Times have changed my friend, and it is a long road back from 9 losses like the Vols will probably end up with this season.

Kelly to Tennessee?

All SEC fans, let's hope that the Vols take Kelly!

I think he is a great coach, but someone who should come into such a major program right now and attempt to recruit against Meyer, Richt, Saban, and Miles???  Not even close...

Tennessee fans aren't my favorite, so I would love to hear the outrage they have over the Vols hiring this guy.  And if Tennessee fans try to pretend they are happy if this guy gets hired, its all fake...he would be a major step back for the program.  Let him do something real big out the Little East before he steps up to the major leagues.

Tennessee has a great history and a great program...they deserve a great coach.  But if they don't get one...oh well...more double-digit beat downs at the hands of the Gators to come for years and years.

Kelly to Tennessee?

I just hope it's not Mike Leach. I couldn't imagine what he could do with an SEC defense and a big recruiting budget. I think it would be frightening.

That it would, and I can't wait to see what he does to OU D.
