Notre Dame hits bottom ...

... and some of its own players.

It doesn't get any worse than this for Notre Dame. You blow a 13-point lead at home to Syracuse which has just fired its coach and just happens to be quarterbacked by Adrian Dantley's son.

The student section pelted the Irish to the point that defensive lineman Pat Kuntz turned around and challenged the crowd after getting hit.

This is rock bottom for the Charlie Weis era. When the students are turning on you at home there is something fundamentally wrong. Even though Weis has seven years to run on his contract, money would not be an issue to buy him out (even though the buyout is reportedly $20 million).

Notre Dame is going to lose USC next week and go to the Sun Bowl (against Nebraska, most likely). The Sun people are ecstatic to get Notre Dame for the obvious reason that it would fill seats -- but would it?

Don't listen to me, read the first three reactions from our Talk Back section:

Weis proving He's not more ways than one.  This was a disastrous loss, and Weis' snow job is coming to an end.  After they get pummelled by USC next week, and most likely lose a bowl game in late December, Weis should be fired pronto.

How the hell does ND lose to Syracuse at home (coming from a Cuse fan)?.

Not Up To Irish StandardsAt 6-4 and a game left with USC, Norte Dame gets a Bowl Bid just on their Name, Weis should decline any Bowl Game and save himself any further humiliation and enbarrassment. Although I don't think it will cost him his job this year, Irish learned their lesson with Willingham, would'nt it be ironic if Notre Dame hired Willingham back?

I do appreciate the picture of "The Contessa" though I think Erin Burnett is hotter.

Not smarting at all.  I never wanted Urban Meyer.  I promise you that.  He's a great motivator and recruiter...No doubt.  On game days, I think he makes some very questionable decisions (i.e. the Ole Miss game this year was a perfect example).  I live here in Florida, an hour and a half from Gainesville, and I've been to several games.  He should never lose with that talent at all, unless it was to an OU or USC.  That team is ridiculously loaded with talent.  I think they will beat Alabama by 25 or more.  They are light years better than Alabama.  I'd take Pete Carroll in a heartbeat or Bob Stoops or Chris Peterson anyday over him as a game day coach.....I think the hype over Meyer is out of control.  I don't care who is at ND.  I don't think they will ever compete on a yearly basis like a USC or UF strictly because they will not lower their standards for athletes.  You just can't compete that way year in year out.  Meyer knew it, and that is reason #1 he never (and smartly) took the job.   The fan base has unreasonable expectations vs the administration's unwillingness to be more flexible with athletes who may not academically be up to ND standard's.   However, even with that, there is no reason for a lack of intensity or lack of fight with the considerable amount of talent that is there now.  That is the problem...period.

Urban Meyer is not good with X's & O's?  You must be a) delusional or b) still smarting from when Meyer turned ND down the first time.

That's not the point...Urban Meyer loses games he shouldn't.  Yes they won a NC and kicked ass.  They kicked the crap out of OSU.  They were very fortunate to get to that game, and they made the most of it.  He is not good with Xs and Os.  That's all I'm saying.  He is one hell of a recruiter, but if ND fires Weis, they better get some who thinks Defense, and running the ball to establish an identity period.  ND has zero for heart or identity.  I will give Meyer this....His teams always show passion.

Urban Meyer is not coming to Notre Dame.

Mike Leech is not coming to Notre Dame.

Phillip Fullmer is not coming to Notre Dame.

Bob Stoops is not coming to Notre Dame.

Like it or not, Charlie Weis is staying at Notre Dame.

Your fear is justified.  UM will be the next coach at ND.  Watch Tebow, Harvin and Spikes bolt if UM leaves this season.  It all depends on what ND does after the loss to SoCal.

Oakland Said - "PS -- ND is "still a year or two" from continuing to play meaningless games against sorry teams that kick their a**.  This program hasn't been worth a damn since the 80's.  Why must we continue to talk about them?  Pitiful."

Funny because while ND wasn't "worth a damn" in the 90s...they were beating Southern Cal every year.  Until you guys go 13 straight years without a lost to ND...shut up!

As an ND fan who watched the game, I can only say I've never seen a team who has such trouble putting teams away and that falls squarely on coaching. They blew leads of 11 and 14 against UNC and Pitt, I think 20 against Navy and now 13 versus Syracuse. Clausen did everything that was asked of him throwing for 291 and two TDs; however, the lack of a running game is an embarrassment. They have quality in the backfield but the line couldn't push around a high school team. It's time for Latina to go at the very least. Further the defense gets absolutely ZERO pressure on the QB, making every QB look All-American. Chuck the 3-4 and go to the 4-3. At least having a shot to stuff the run on occasion. Corwin Brown is an adept recruiter, but not sure about his ability to be DC. Weis won't be fired, but he will be forced to bring in new coordinators and position coaches. I guess the upside is that Weis hasn't told Irish fans to "get a life". Yet.

BCB... if Meyer gets outcoached only once or twice a year, it'd be a million times better than any ND coach since Lou Holtz, woudn't you say?

What makes you delusional Irish fans think you could get Stoops or Meyer?  Come.  On.  Meyer and Stoops have achieved God-like status in powerhouse programs.  Leach is a mild possibility if you cut the Weis-hole loose in time, but Leach is building a great foundation at Texas Tech.  Leach will probably either re-sign with Tech or bolt for Tennessee before the Irish job becomes available anyways.
