Notre Dame hits bottom ...

... and some of its own players.

It doesn't get any worse than this for Notre Dame. You blow a 13-point lead at home to Syracuse which has just fired its coach and just happens to be quarterbacked by Adrian Dantley's son.

The student section pelted the Irish to the point that defensive lineman Pat Kuntz turned around and challenged the crowd after getting hit.

This is rock bottom for the Charlie Weis era. When the students are turning on you at home there is something fundamentally wrong. Even though Weis has seven years to run on his contract, money would not be an issue to buy him out (even though the buyout is reportedly $20 million).

Notre Dame is going to lose USC next week and go to the Sun Bowl (against Nebraska, most likely). The Sun people are ecstatic to get Notre Dame for the obvious reason that it would fill seats -- but would it?

Don't listen to me, read the first three reactions from our Talk Back section:

Weis proving He's not more ways than one.  This was a disastrous loss, and Weis' snow job is coming to an end.  After they get pummelled by USC next week, and most likely lose a bowl game in late December, Weis should be fired pronto.

How the hell does ND lose to Syracuse at home (coming from a Cuse fan)?.

Not Up To Irish StandardsAt 6-4 and a game left with USC, Norte Dame gets a Bowl Bid just on their Name, Weis should decline any Bowl Game and save himself any further humiliation and enbarrassment. Although I don't think it will cost him his job this year, Irish learned their lesson with Willingham, would'nt it be ironic if Notre Dame hired Willingham back?

Notre Dame hits bottom ...

I have said in many posts that a coach needs 6-7 years to get his system in place then evaluate his performance. In the last couple of weeks I have been saying maybe Weis needs to go, even though I have no idea who would want to come and coach at ND.This team played with heart and enthusiasm in the beginning of the season. Ever since the UNC game they have given up big leads and lost them all but Navy. There seems to be no life on the ND sidelines during these games and they whole teams seems to have no clue as to how to stop the other team from winning. Weis will probably be back next year but something needs to change and that includes the attitude of the players. The only thing I can hope for is that these losses will be a learning experience for this young team, but I am not holding my breath or getting my hopes up to have them dashed against the bleachers. As a ND fan of 39 years I am going to have to see something besides wins against teams with losing records to say this team is on the right track.

Notre Dame hits bottom ...

We are pitiful but I think we have been meaningful since the 1980's.  If we haven't then why did we dominate USC for the 1990's?

Notre Dame hits bottom ...

As a life-long Notre Dame fan, there is no excuse for this.  First we lose to Navy last year, win three total games.  And now we lose at home, on senior day, as a 19 point favorite to a team with 2 wins.  If any Notre Dame fan tries to justify this, please let me know your argument.  I don't want to hear about Ty or the standards, or anything else.  We have more talent in our Freshman class than Syracuse has on their entire roster.  We play heartless, emotionless football.  It is a disgrace.  Weis is not a head coach.  He is a coordinator at best.  He doesn't teach the fundamentals, he doesn't motivate, and he has to give it up with "out-scheming" the opponent.  Our offense lacks an identity because the game plan changes every week to "expose the competition".  This isn't the NFL, where the players are grown men that know the fundamentals of the game and where there is forced parity; or basically where schemes are important.  Figure out what you are good at, and go out and do it week after week.  Any good coach can identify this.  Play to the skills of your team.  This team has 50+ 4-star athletes and there is no reason whatsoever that this should happen.  Weis should go, now.

Other observations to the Ty Willie fans.  This does not make you right.  Weis' failures does not make Ty a good coach.  Basically, they both stink.

As for the Florida fans worried we are going to back up a Brooks truck to Meyer, not going to happen.  It's not about money.  Meyer turned down Notre Dame because the school refused to make recruiting concessions to him.  He said that the team could never compete for a title with their standards.  Well, he was right.  He was also right to go to Florida where he could compete for a title sans the recruiting standards.  Now, notice I am saying compete for a title.  Regardless of our standards, with the talent on this squad; we should win 8-9 games every year, never lose to Syracuse, never lose to an academy, and never make a game out of San Diego State.

Notre Dame hits bottom ...

I don't know why you continue to read articles about Notre Dame and comment on them.  Maybe you envy the popularity of the Irish?  I don't know.  Wait I got it.  Maybe Dennis Dodd physically forced you to read this article?  That must be it.

PS.  Urban Meyer is not coming to South Bend after this season.  I give you one guess who is going to be the coach of Notre Dame next season........need more time?.........yep you got it.  Charlie Weis.  Going from 3-9 to 6-6 is pretty darn good in my books.  And furthermore, Dodd, don't write about something you didn't personally see.  Only one snowball was thrown at an Irish player the entire game and the entire student section immediately started pelting the kid who threw it with snowballs.  The Syracuse cheerleaders unfortunately got hit with a few more.

As Always.

Go Irish!

Notre Dame hits bottom ...

Can I just tell you that as a USC fan, I am praying -- praying -- Oregon St. beats Oregon, so that 'SC will play in another bowl besides the Rose?!  It gets boring as hell dominating a Big Ten team in the Rose Bowl every year ... I'd like to see the Trojans get a shot at an SEC team somewhere else.

PS -- ND is "still a year or two" from continuing to play meaningless games against sorry teams that kick their a**.  This program hasn't been worth a damn since the 80's.  Why must we continue to talk about them?  Pitiful.

Nortre Dame - Join a conference. Any conference. I don't even think you can be a champion even at Ivy.

Well, actually ND or Nebraska could go to the Sun Bowl, but not both.  The Pac 10 gets one birth and either a Big East or Big 12 team gets the other (whichever conference the Gator Bowl did not choose).  ND is considered a Big East team in bowl selections, so they will be most likely playing a Pac 10 team (maybe Arizona or Oregon).  Nebraska will most likely go to either the Gator or Alamo bowl, but will not be playing ND in either of them.

Nebraska v ND in the Sun Bowl, Dodd?  Yeah...because they are in the Pac 10?  You're clueless!  Nebraska was mentioned as a possibility for the Gator Bowl instead of Notre Dame, not to play against ND in the Sun Bowl!   Maybe you should read your own company's website once in a while...they have the rules listed.

Nebraska has no tie-in to the Sun Bowl.

I don't know why I am even responding since it's this kind of loose "journalism" with which your name has become synonomous.

Notre Dame hits bottom ...

I hear a lot of talk about ND needing to have patience  but Weis did better his first year and has been going downhill ever since. It is the inconsistency that drives me crazy and they way they blow 4th quarter leads all of a sudden. I think Claussen is highly overrated. They have some tremendous young  talent, we'll have to see if they are able to coach them into somethng next year or Weis will be GONE!

Notre Dame hits bottom ...

bleedcubbieblue. Right there with you dude. We all know Florida is pounding all those SEC teams and the Citadel but what would they be w/o Tim Tebow? The kid is good and has class. It looks like it will be Oklahoma against the winner of the Florida-Alabama game unless Fla State beats Florida and they are pounding Maryland...what the heck is going on today....Vandy losses to Tennessee, NC State humilated UNC(didnt see that one coming); I finally pick Wash to win a game and they lose and Oklahoma is steamrolling Texas Tech...not a good day for me. I think Charlie Weis is a nice guy - I have met him - but he cant coach college kids. He isnt responsible for the missed tackles, field goals, etc., but it should not have come to  home the last game for your seniors to a team who has won 2 many more humiliating defeats do we have to endure? Notre Dame has NEVER in school history before now lost to a team with 8 losses and Charlie Weis has lost 14 games in 2 years the worst in school history and the loss to Navy last year ended the winning would you like to have those "accomplishments" on your resume. I am sorry enough is enough. He wont be fired this season is a different story. Make no mistake about it he better be worrying about his job. The SB Tribune jjournalists were brutal last week - can you imagine what they will be like this week?
