Utah is No. 1!

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- You expected a bit of a letdown for Alabama after losing the SEC championship game.

You didn't expect the Tide to be on Vicodin.

For those of you not up on your prescription pharms, that's what the dentist gives you before he removes your wisdom teeth. Yeah, it felt about like that for Alabama after one of the most humiliating losses in the program's history.

Louisiana-Monroe was bad. A two-touchdown beatdown by Utah in the Sugar Bowl is worse.

That first Bama team was rebuilding. This one was turning the corner.

Was.

Don't give me anything about a "rebuilt" offensive line. It was missing one player from arguably the best offensive line in the country. Left tackle Andre Smith was suspended.

Sure, the Tide were down to a third-string replacement for Smith. But let's call this what it was -- a choke. Alabama-did-not-come-to-play. For Utah, this was the biggest game in school history. For Bama, it was a consolation prize after losing what was  essentially a national semifinal loss to Florida in the SEC championship game.

Still, shouldn't Alabama be able to smack Utah on 364 out of 365 days of the year?  Sure, but it's a new year, some will say a new era.

This wasn't a fluke. Utah became the first non-BCS school to go undefeated in two seasons. You will begin to hear a cry for the Mountain West joining the BCS conferences. I can't disagree. The league was better overall than the Pac-10 in the regular season and just defeated a top-five powerhouse from the SEC.

There is some convoluted formula for "evaluating" the automatic qualifier status of BCS conferences. It won't happen any time soon but it should: Drop the ACC or Big East from the ACC and elevate the Mountain West. Now.

This should be more about Utah than Alabama. Saban and the Tide will have to deal with an enough taunts in the offseason ("Ute ought to be able to beat Utah!").

I'm looking for reasons not to make Utah No. 1. It has beaten four top-25 teams, two teams in the top 10 (TCU, Alabama). It beat the only team to beat USC (Oregon State). I will put Utah's non-conference schedule against Florida's and Oklahoma's.

Will Utah get the final No. 1 in AP? Not likely. Brand names still rule in the polls. Should the Utes be No. 1. One word: Undefeated. In this age of parity, there was only team in the whole land that can make that claim. It walked into the belly of the SEC beast and embarrassed Bear's boys.

I can't think of another team more deserving of being No. 1 right now. The Utes just took a small chunk of relevance out of that game they're playing down here in a few days.

What do they call it, the BCS title game? That sounds kind of shallow after what happened in New Orleans.

Utah is No. 1!

The Bottom Line is and always has been, the Total Body of work that Boise never displayed throughout an entire season. Boise being 7-17 vs BCS teams through a 16 year period proves that as well. That's an average of 1.5 GAMES PER SEASON against a Real BCS quality opponent. That is completely ridiculous. To have a team representing the "TOP 5" of college football, to have played 1.5 teams per year to prove it? Unreal.

And their only rebuttal is to petend to be deaf, dumb and blind and keep pounding those drill-bit tech teams , the yosemite Yellowjackets are waiting for their shot ,Boise- be a sport

Utah is No. 1!

As a Utah fan and fan of the MWC, I don't want to see the ACC or Big East out of the BCS.  In fact, I don't even want an automatic bid for the MWC.  I like that we have to earn our bid in a way that's far more demanding than Virginia Tech or Cinci.  Don't get me wrong, they played hard teams.  But if they didn't have an automatic bid, there's no way either of those teams would have been in the Orange bowl this year.  So long as the MWC doesn't have an automatic bid, every time we get in a BCS game WE WILL DOMINATE!  Because we don't get it for free.  We have to earn it.  And I'm completely fine with that.  I don't want to see a 3 loss MWC team in a BCS game.  No 3 loss or 4 loss team should be playing in a BCS game.  Period.  So if a MWC team wants to play with the big boys, they're going to have to come out and play the best football they got.  And I'm totally ok with that.

The only thing I'd like to see changed is support for non-BCS schools.  Utah should be #1.  And when Flordia beats Oklahoma, people will start to wonder what Utah would have looked like in the championship game.  And hopefully they'll go back and watch even just the first quarter of the Sugar Bowl.

Don't give the MWC an automatice bid.  Make us earn the BCS game.  But give us respect when we do earn it.  That's all we really ask.

Utah is No. 1!

Utah should be #1...they are in fact...Undefeated...anyone else, okay...case closed...they beat 4 top 25 teams...They proved it on the field vs. Alabama...The Utes may not be better than Oklahoma, Florida, USC, or even Texas (overrated) for that matter, but they had a better year than all of the above...

Utah is No. 1!

Anyone who watched the Mountain West this year knows the league was superior to the ACC or Big East.

The only reason the ACC or Big East are in the BCS is because they are close to Bristol, CT. The only reason the MTN WEST is not is because the talking heads in Bristol, CT dont know anything about the Mountain West.

It's that simple

What?

You list the teams at the bottom of the ACC like they are good teams or something.....NOT the case.   You must be basing your conclusion on the NAMES of the schools and not the quality of the teams.

Drop, add, who cares!

There should be a playoff.  As oldroydj points out, why argue about who gets the last seat on the Titanic (BCS),  it's going to sink.

utah was 12-0.

losing to a 12-0 team makes it "one of the most humiliating losses in the program's history"!?

nice sensationalism

This should be more about Utah than Alabama.

yes, it should have been, but that's not your style though is it?

Utah is No. 1!

Lets give the "drop the Big East, etc" argument a rest.  Any elite team deserves a shot - based on thier performance that year - period.  Was the MWC better than the Big East?  That is beside the point.  THE BCS SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!  AUTOMATIC BIDS SHOULD BE GIVEN TO ALL CONFERENCES OR NONE.  THE BIDS SHOULD BE FOR A PLAY-OFF!!!  This is not gymastics or ice-skating!  Let's settle things on the field.  GO UTES!!!

Utah is No. 1!

I have been a Utah fan since birth.  I hate Boise State fans, but...  Boisie state's only loss was by one point to TCU in the best bowl game of the year (ok - second best).  TCU had only 2 losses Utah and Oklahoma.  TCU was the toughest team Utah played all year.  Does Boise state belong in the BCS?  Does TCU belong in the BCS?  No.  They belong in a play-off system along with Utah, and all of the one loss powerhouses who got screwed out of a chance to play for a championship.  Lets decide these things on the field - unless the "big name schools" are too scared to get beat by teams who are playing fantastic ball in spite of glaring disadvantages in money and recruiting ability.  As for this year, Utah should be voted number one!  Kyle Whittingham should be coach of the year!  Utah has gone undefeated and BCS bowling twice in the last five years.  How many times does Utah have to go undefeated before this happens?
