Utah is No. 1!

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- You expected a bit of a letdown for Alabama after losing the SEC championship game.

You didn't expect the Tide to be on Vicodin.

For those of you not up on your prescription pharms, that's what the dentist gives you before he removes your wisdom teeth. Yeah, it felt about like that for Alabama after one of the most humiliating losses in the program's history.

Louisiana-Monroe was bad. A two-touchdown beatdown by Utah in the Sugar Bowl is worse.

That first Bama team was rebuilding. This one was turning the corner.

Was.

Don't give me anything about a "rebuilt" offensive line. It was missing one player from arguably the best offensive line in the country. Left tackle Andre Smith was suspended.

Sure, the Tide were down to a third-string replacement for Smith. But let's call this what it was -- a choke. Alabama-did-not-come-to-play. For Utah, this was the biggest game in school history. For Bama, it was a consolation prize after losing what was  essentially a national semifinal loss to Florida in the SEC championship game.

Still, shouldn't Alabama be able to smack Utah on 364 out of 365 days of the year?  Sure, but it's a new year, some will say a new era.

This wasn't a fluke. Utah became the first non-BCS school to go undefeated in two seasons. You will begin to hear a cry for the Mountain West joining the BCS conferences. I can't disagree. The league was better overall than the Pac-10 in the regular season and just defeated a top-five powerhouse from the SEC.

There is some convoluted formula for "evaluating" the automatic qualifier status of BCS conferences. It won't happen any time soon but it should: Drop the ACC or Big East from the ACC and elevate the Mountain West. Now.

This should be more about Utah than Alabama. Saban and the Tide will have to deal with an enough taunts in the offseason ("Ute ought to be able to beat Utah!").

I'm looking for reasons not to make Utah No. 1. It has beaten four top-25 teams, two teams in the top 10 (TCU, Alabama). It beat the only team to beat USC (Oregon State). I will put Utah's non-conference schedule against Florida's and Oklahoma's.

Will Utah get the final No. 1 in AP? Not likely. Brand names still rule in the polls. Should the Utes be No. 1. One word: Undefeated. In this age of parity, there was only team in the whole land that can make that claim. It walked into the belly of the SEC beast and embarrassed Bear's boys.

I can't think of another team more deserving of being No. 1 right now. The Utes just took a small chunk of relevance out of that game they're playing down here in a few days.

What do they call it, the BCS title game? That sounds kind of shallow after what happened in New Orleans.

Utah is No. 1!

"As a linguistics major and writer...."

Perhaps you should, if I may suggest, eliminate some of, your commas.

Also,  when you stated, "CBS/SEC Lovers, couldn't distinguish a pencil from there, well, you know." I believe you meant from 'THEIR', not 'there'. (Glass houses and all that stuff).

BTW, I do agree that the Utes deserve a split championship. I also wish you the best in your career, no snark intended.

Utah is No. 1!

Pretty sure a terrible Wyoming team beat a 9-2 Virginia team last year.  The Mountain West is superior to the ACC and the Big East top to bottom.

DODD is extremely ignorant - Is the SEC weak?

Dodd,

You're a nit wit. When Mountain West teams were beating Pac-10 teams earlier in the season you assumed it was because the Pac-10 was weak. What if SEC teams played more Mountain West teams? Maybe they'd have lost too. The point is that maybe the Mountain West is stronger than it gets credit for being, while the Pac-10 is not as weak as previously thought. You would never admit such a thing because you don't want to believe it. Prove me wrong and own up to the fact that the Pac-10 is good, the SEC isn't much better, and the Mountain West can hang with both the Pac-10 and SEC. And finally, that USC deserves a share of the NC. :)

Dodd the Dud

Dodd,

As a linguistics major and writer myself, I must say that you are awful.

It's difficult for me to imagine that you are actually a writer, because the garbage that you typically vomit is positively atrocious.

You, and your cohorts (CBS pundits), wrote my beloved Utes off weeks ago, and now, you are on the bandwagon.

I'm sure you are a great person, and wonderful human being, but your writing abilities and delivery directive are laughable.

The Utes proved that they can hang with any team in the country, just like the 2004 team. Don't rip on other conferences in order to distract the reader from your previous posts and predictions, because I see what you're doing.

CBS/SEC Lovers, couldn't distinguish a pencil from there, well, you know.

Sincerely,

THE UTES RULE!!!

p.s. CBS, if you want a qualified and intelligent writer, who loves sports, please let me know.

"Drop the ACC or Big East from the ACC and elevate the Mountain West. Now. "

You are an embarrasment for writing this.  Why don't you take a look at the record of Big East teams in the BCS games over the last 5 years and then see if you think they should be removed.  I'll make it easy for you - the Big East has only lost once (this year).

Sports writers like you that continue to bash the Big East should maybe pay attention to the league once in a while...

Utah is No. 1!

Over the last 20 years (minus maybe 5 years in that stretch) nobody wanted to play Miami or FSU.  Just look at the National Championship games since 1996.  Miami or FSU were in those games 6 out of the twelve years.  When these two schools return to prominance, the ACC will be very strong.

Utah is No. 1!

your an idiot to say the the defenses of the big 12 were horrible are one thing because i the only real good one is texas but to say the offenses were good it stupid. Second USC sucks i mean honestly they were given that game after PSU scored their first TD. THe thing is you stupid. Utah did what they are suppose to do i agree but to act like USC is great is stupid. Can you say one thing about USC that will convince me that their offense is good? NO! because oregon state showed how to beat USC play ball control offense and USC will make mistakes!

Utah is No. 1!

I agree that the ACC schools you mentioned aren't good all the time. Can't we say the same about Utah?! Or have I seen them in the national spotlight over the last 30 years or will we see them keep this up over the next 30 years? Highly doubtful. Let's not have a kneejerk reaction because a school puts together a "run" of 2-3 year good years.
