Utah is No. 1!

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- You expected a bit of a letdown for Alabama after losing the SEC championship game.

You didn't expect the Tide to be on Vicodin.

For those of you not up on your prescription pharms, that's what the dentist gives you before he removes your wisdom teeth. Yeah, it felt about like that for Alabama after one of the most humiliating losses in the program's history.

Louisiana-Monroe was bad. A two-touchdown beatdown by Utah in the Sugar Bowl is worse.

That first Bama team was rebuilding. This one was turning the corner.

Don't give me anything about a "rebuilt" offensive line. It was missing one player from arguably the best offensive line in the country. Left tackle Andre Smith was suspended.

Sure, the Tide were down to a third-string replacement for Smith. But let's call this what it was -- a choke. Alabama-did-not-come-to-play. For Utah, this was the biggest game in school history. For Bama, it was a consolation prize after losing what was  essentially a national semifinal loss to Florida in the SEC championship game.

Still, shouldn't Alabama be able to smack Utah on 364 out of 365 days of the year?  Sure, but it's a new year, some will say a new era.

This wasn't a fluke. Utah became the first non-BCS school to go undefeated in two seasons. You will begin to hear a cry for the Mountain West joining the BCS conferences. I can't disagree. The league was better overall than the Pac-10 in the regular season and just defeated a top-five powerhouse from the SEC.

There is some convoluted formula for "evaluating" the automatic qualifier status of BCS conferences. It won't happen any time soon but it should: Drop the ACC or Big East from the ACC and elevate the Mountain West. Now.

This should be more about Utah than Alabama. Saban and the Tide will have to deal with an enough taunts in the offseason ("Ute ought to be able to beat Utah!").

I'm looking for reasons not to make Utah No. 1. It has beaten four top-25 teams, two teams in the top 10 (TCU, Alabama). It beat the only team to beat USC (Oregon State). I will put Utah's non-conference schedule against Florida's and Oklahoma's.

Will Utah get the final No. 1 in AP? Not likely. Brand names still rule in the polls. Should the Utes be No. 1. One word: Undefeated. In this age of parity, there was only team in the whole land that can make that claim. It walked into the belly of the SEC beast and embarrassed Bear's boys.

I can't think of another team more deserving of being No. 1 right now. The Utes just took a small chunk of relevance out of that game they're playing down here in a few days.

What do they call it, the BCS title game? That sounds kind of shallow after what happened in New Orleans.

Too many AP voters like Barry Switzer

What a Jacka**.  Did anyone watch the pre-game and post game on Fox?  Even with a totally dominant performance over a highly rated and explosive team, Switzer wasn't willing to admit that Utah should be #1.  The media will not allow it because we have way too many in the Associated Press that are unwilling to give credit where credit is due unless you are from one of 4 conferences.  I still don't believe that this is enough to sway the powers that be into a playoff system.

Utah is No. 1!

Didn't lowly Wyoming beat traditional SEC powerhouse Tennessee in Knoxville on Homecoming this past season?

You are right about the need for a playoffs, it will happen, soon!

Dodd and his ever prescent ignorance

Dodd -

You are a hack.  you are 16-13 in your bowl selection thus far, a far cry from being an "expert" and now you are saying that the Utah deserves to be #1?  Come on.  Utah is a great team, but the likes of Florida or Texas (who should be playing in the National Championship game this year) would certainly beat Utah.

Drop the Big East and the ACC from the BCS, that is just pure nonsense, but then again its coming from you.

Keep the dribble coming.  You are comical at best.

Utah is No. 1!

You can say Alabama choked but I don't think anybody could have beaten Utah last night.  Stop with the excuses Dodd. Anyone who watched that game objectively would say the better team won, period.  Almost two to one yardage differential, Alabama touchdowns on a punt return and a 30-yard drive after a fumble recovery.  When Utah answered after Bama made it 21-17 the game was effectively over.  Time to start admitting that all you media types underestimated how good Utah was, maybe as the result of a "Hawaii hangover" from last year's Sugar Bowl.  Guess what, the Mountain West is not the WAC, which until further notice is Boise State's playground.

Taunts ... "Ute ought to be able to beat Utah!"

Oh my God. That's the best you can come up with? If that's all the opposing fans can come up with, then bring it on. A four-year-old could come up with something more offensive than that.

Geez, Dodd, you're not much of a writer to begin with but instead of trying to be a comedian, why don't you take your few remaining brain cells and try to produce something with some logic. For example, you start out railing against 'Bama calling this loss worse than the one to Monroe. Then you anoint Utah the number one team in the country. Huh? If Utah truly is #1 (which I agree with), then how is it so shameful for 'Bama to lose to the best team in the country? The Tide just lost to a 13-0 team that you are indicating is your pick for #1 right now. 'Bama was playing only for their final ranking having already lost a chance at the national title. Explain to me one more time how that's worse than losing to a doormat like Monroe? On second thought, don't waste the keystrokes.

It can only be one or the other - either this story should be about how shameful it is for Alabama to flop against a no-name program like Utah OR it should be about how Utah proved they belonged and are better than most of us ever imagined. It can't be both.

I'll take option 2, and there should be no shame in losing to the nation's best team.

Ute ought to be able to figure that out. (Just trying to stay on your elementary level, Dodd.)

Utah is No. 1!

to beef up the MWC so we can get an auto bid just add Boise St., Fresno St and maybe Nevada or HI, and we would have just as many good teams as the ACC. you can say the ACC has Miami, G-tech, V-tech, and Clemson, but like Dodd said those are just some name brand schools it doesn't mean they are good all the time.

Utah is No. 1!

Just give the Mountain West champ an automatic invite. I have been saying this all year.  The Pac-10 won all five of its bowls, yet went 1-6 against the Mountain West during the regular season.  After what Utah did to Alabama, case closed.

Utah is No. 1!

You forget, the Big East and ACC were two of the conferences who created the BCS, naming themselves the only ones deserving of such attention.... The BCS was never intended to be fair, it was set up to monpoloize all the good bowl monehy
