Parcells to OU. Stoops not to the Broncos.

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Dolphins EVPFO Bill Parcells attended Oklahoma's Saturday practice.

EVPFO, that's Executive Vice President for Football Operations or fancy talk for general manager.

"He’s just evaluating our players I’m sure, but it was great to have him here. I’ve always been a big fan of the way he coaches and the way he handles you media guys too," Bob Stoops said. "I think it’s always important when you get a legendary figure and a guy that’s a hall of fame coach. I just like to have our players see and hear from those kind of guys and always he has a great message for them."

Stoops also shot down rumors about him and the vacant Broncos job. Denver owner Pat Bowlen is an Oklahoma grad.

"What situation? That’s a rumor that I have not heard and no one has contacted me about that so I don’t know anything about it," Stoops said. "We’re preparing for a national championship and that’s all my focus and all my concentration’s on so obviously I’m not a candidate. I’m sure someone might have told me other than you guys if I was a candidate."

The early hypocrite of year award goes to Joe Paterno. The venerable coach complained about the media intrusion on himself and his team at the Rose Bowl.

“People running around with cameras taking pictures of me," Paterno told reporters on Friday, the day after his team lost to USC in the Rose Bowl, "when I’ve got a team of guys bustin’ their butts to get themselves in this situation. And people are more worried about me than talking about guys like Daryll Clark and Derrick Williams and people like that.”

Hey, we'd love to talk to them coach but you closed the lockerroom after the game which is against BCS policy. You also stiffed ABC on a promised interview before the game.

“I just think there’s a limit to how much you can expose your football team to.”

Those two statements don't make sense together, coach. You can't complain about us not talking to your players, then in the same breath complain about how much we talk to your players.

The Rose and BCS are considering what action to take against Paterno and Penn State. There are apparently fines for violating terms of the BCS contract which states that lockerrooms must be open to media after all five games.

There are some strong hints that Oregon offensive coordinator Chip Kelly isn't going to be a coach in waiting much longer. Mike Bellotti seems to be clearing the decks to become athletic director before next season. Bellotti has given two assistants permission to "explore other options." Those options apparently do not include staying at Oregon under Kelly.

Pardon Utah if it felt slighted at the Sugar Bowl. First there were shirts being sold identifying Utah as being in the WAC (it is in the Mountain West). Before the game fans were given some novelties (clappers, etc.) that identified the Utes as being the "Uthes".

It's all about Parity

If you're Bill Parcels, I would question more- WHY I WOULDN'T BE AT THAT PRACTICE. The man has a chance to make a steal on draft day and is looking at somebody he sees low enough for him to reach- Oklahoma maybe or maybe not the best team in the Nation- but it is definitely one of the top five, so there is obvious talent.

With Mike Shannahan in the coaching hunt now- he's going to gain a lot more interest than Stoops. Stoops has a home and may not want to make the jump to the PRO's, especially when he make not be able to make all the calls like he does now.

As far as JoePA- man- that is just Joe, if you ever heard him talk - this in no surprise. He likes the silent praise- talk about him when he's not in earshot- otherwise talk about the team- and only about football. He loves running a clean game and will drop starters if they can't follow the rules. Aside from the fact that he wins, Penn State gets him virtually for free because he give back almost all of his salary in donations to the school- check it out,you don't have to trust me. And his recruiting list is alot harder than most schools, because if you don't come recommended, or from a Penn State lineage, you cant get a visit for a scholarship with a D average in high school. The few low graders that make the team have to increase grades to stay on the team. Austin Scott had more than knee problems keeping him out of the lineup a few years ago. And how much did you hear about how Joe helped second string QB , Pat Devlin, transfer to DELAWARE to get 2 years of eligibility by not playing in the bowl game because he was told he wasn't going to beat out CLARK.  By the way- this is a guy that came off the bench cold and beat Ohio State. The players love Joe- because he treats them like their his kids, and protecting them from the press is more important to him- he'll probably pay the fine himself

I can see the UTAH marketing boo boos, after all Utah State is in the WAC.- the shirts were probably marketted from somebody in Alabama, and made in China. I remember one year during the DORSETT era in PITT, they spelled PITT (Pittsburg)-there is supposed to be an "h" on the end--Bettcha alot of those mispelled shirts and items solded like hotcakes.

Even a Playoff system may not trump the PARITY in college

UTAH prooved the parity of college football and what a good coach that knows how to recruit and do at a Division one program, especially when the only in state competition Is BYU and Utah State, and one of them requires some specific religious committment- unless you consider SNOW university or DIXIE State college big competion. Winning programs bring winning recruits and I wouldn't be surprise if he sold the point that they could be the first non-BCS National champs when recruiting. Alabama is good team, but I didn't think they were the best team in the nation when they were number one. Texas Tech  just prooved that the big 12 might not be as strong as everybody thought - they just lost by 13 to a team with 4 losses that had to win the last 5 regular season games to go 9-4,- but wait, they only lost to BAMA by 4, and beat LSU and somehow managed to lose to Vanderbilt but beat FLORIDA, so Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, even USC are going to be claiming the number one spot- why shouldn't UTAH ? At least they can say they're spotless and not in a "I beat you but you beat him but he beat me" contest.

Florida beat 5-top25 teams, and still got beat by Mississippi by a point, the team that got beat by Alabama by 4 during the season but lost to South Carolina who lost to Vanderbilt who lost to Duke who lost to Northwestern who lost to Indiana who lost to Ball St. who was actually 12-1 for the season, so BALL STATE vrs FLORIDA should be an interesting bowl game. (That Mid-American Conference- hooha!) To bad they lost their conference to Buffalo who lost to Conneticut  who lost to Pittsburgh, who lost to Bowling Green, who lost to BOISE STATE who was 12-0 regualar season and finished 12- losing tby a point o TCU who by coincidence lost to UTAH by 3 during the season.

And there is a lot more parity than the sportswriters want to admit, look at the way they define strong conferences,--when Ohio State and Michigan go to the championship game- the BIG 10 is great.  When Penn St or Illionois go to the Rose Bowl- the Big ten sucks

The BIG 12 is the "Strongest Conference"- they put Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech as possible National Champions in either the one or two slot during the regulare year-7 of 12 teams with winning records- including Nebraska at 9-4 which is now a considered slumming, and Okl St-at 9-4  BUT-- how did they fare out:

Oregon beats Okl St by 11 ,  Missou gets past Northwestern( the purple nobodies of the Big  10) by 7 in OT,  Kansas- who  was never near the 1-2-3 slots during the year, beats Minnesota by 21, and Nebraska ( the maid of honor) beats Clemson by 5

For as much as I'd like to see a playoff- what could possibly create more interest and controversy in college football than the system we have now. Colleges continue to have bragging rights to National Championships by winning one game and going 1-10.  Bottom line is the top team in the Nation is the team that floats to the top at the END of the season and we spend moocho buck and watch a lot of TV to proove it otherwise- Only in America.

Have a nice season

Parcells to OU. Stoops not to the Broncos.

The answer is that he is being offered the Denver GM/President gig and wants Stoops to be his coach.

Not a bad combination.

Parcells to OU. Stoops not to the Broncos.

Parcells knows the NFL like the back of his hand.  Why would he go to college?  Money?  Doesn't he have enough?
