Signing day upsets

So you know I'd rather eat dirt than spend a minute fretting over recruiting but there were a couple of notable developments on Wednesday.

Manti Te'o to Notre Dame? Incredible. A Mormon -- maybe the first Mormon -- at Our Lady's program. Not only that, if you read my Monday story, there isn't exactly a big LDS presence in St. Joseph County. This "get" is as much about perception as recruiting. Charlie Weis just might be making the slow climb back to respectability.

Te'o certainly wasn't chasing bowl games but he is comfortable. It still floors me that he didn't stay on the West Coast. The kid is going to be given every chance to play right away as a freshman. With middle linebacker Brian Smith, Te'o (who prefers to play inside) ND could have a deadly combination.

USC also lost linebacker Vontaze Burfict to Arizona State. That's two huge linebacking prospects who could have played right way, getting away. USC will still finish in the top five nationally but this might be another indicator that the Trojans' death grip on the Pac-10 is weakening.

The flattest state in America is Oklahoma, not Indiana.  it's so flat there that when Oklahoma chokes on Gator meat, the sobbing in Norman is heard in Lincoln.

Don't tell that to Jim McMahon.  He'd loudly disagree with you based on his BYU days...Cool

You're joking, right?

Or maybe you just meant to use a different word from "tolerant"?

Te'o would rather play the whole game while getting pounded 0-38 with ND instead of being on the USC side WINNING 38-0.

Where's the logic?

I know of evangelical Christains who go to Notre Dame and even some that played football there.

In fact the Provost there for many years until last year (when he became President of Wake Forest (I beleive) was a Wheaton College graduate which is a very conservative Evangelical Christain school.) I also know of Profrossers who have gone from Wheaton to teach at Notre Dame.

I do not think that relgion is the reason he choose to play for the Irish.

He just saw that he had a better opportunity to make an impact there more then USC where the majority of the players are great.

No question he will start as a freshman in South Bend. Could USC make that same promise ?

Lets hope that he can help bring the Irish program back to respectability.

Maybe the kid is banking on ND having more boosters who can pull strings for him at the Pearly Gates?
