Miami has a new defensive coordinator

Posted on: February 9, 2009 2:56 pm

Randy Shannon has settled on John Lovett, North Carolina's special teams coordinator/defensive assistant. Except an announcement sometime this week.

Lovett, 58, becomes Miami's third defensive coordinator in three seasons. He has been a d-coordinator at Auburn, Clemson, Maine and Bowling Green.

Don't expect any major rules changes to come from the annual NCAA rules committee meeting this week in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. I spoke to secretary-rules editor Rogers Redding who specifically mentioned that the timing rules will stay in play. The length of games (and plays per game) were reduced slightly in 2008 with the new timing rules.

"I think there's a sense of, let's let these soak in for a while," Redding told me. "Let's take a deep breath."

He said there was some discussion of adding a two-minute warning but that there wasn't enough support.

You are correct-the changes have not hurt recruiting.  It just hurts player development, player skill, team chemistry, and this translates into on-field ability.

The thing you guys do not realize is that Miami will always get recruits, regadless of whom the head coach is. But that is changing because the team is losing.  I cannot recall any impact player from outside Florida begin recruited lately.  Oh wait Bryce Brown is coming right??  Not in a million years with this headcoach.  He cannot even find assistant who want to coach at UM. Randy Shannon will be out after his fourth non-productive season.  You guy should push his departure, so you can be competitive again, unless you are satisfied with 6-6.

Did you see the last 2:41 of the bowl game?  That was the worst, unprepared, and weak 2 minute drill I have seen at any level, any time, in my entire life.  My sons Pop Warner team executes better.  But then again they are better coached.

And I love the fact a Tide fan comments on a Gator's comments on an in-state school in Florida.  Like the Tide fans don't keep an eye on the other team in their state.  Like it or not....Auburn will be back.

Three DD's in three years.  One wonders how recruiting is affected by the annual Hurricane musical chairs syndrome.  Or chemistry.  Or continuity.  But one things for sure.  Some real estate broker is smiling each year.
