Oregon's new coach?

Posted on: February 16, 2009 10:00 am

As of right now -- this moment -- the biggest story in college football is not Lane Kiffin, it's the situation at Oregon.

Mike Bellotti is keeping everyone on edge with his decision (maybe) to step down as coach. A succession plan is in place with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly taking over but things are getting at little uncomfortable as spring practice approaches. Ducks AD Pat Kilkenny suggests as much during this Q&A with the Eugene Register-Guard.

If not now, Mike, when?

Bellotti has hinted that he might stay one or two more seasons. He has also hinted that if he's going to hang it up, it's going to be before spring practice. Kilkenny would like to know since Bellotti would take his job if he quits football.

Oregon's new coach?

I think Kilkenny holds the cards in this game. When he leaves, Bellotti moves into the AD job and Chip Kelly takes over the football program. My guess is that Kilkenny will stay on to do some dirty work, the firing of Ernie Kent as men's basketball coach. That will keep Bellotti from having to be the bad guy in his first big move as AD, but will leave him open for the glory of getting the new basketball coach on board. (Expect Mark Few, a Duck alum who came from the Eugene "suburb" of Creswell, to be the guy.) The timing: basketball season ends in early March, Kent's dismissal is completed, Kilkenny decides he will step down as soon as possible, Bellotti is in as his successor and Chip Kelly takes over the Ducks for spring football drills, which begin March 30. Done deal.

Oregon's new coach?

the only people getting uncomfortable is the media, bloggers and the fans (and possibly PK). from articles that i've read from MB, CK, the players, and recruits, no one seems too anxious for the move. they all know MB will move on in the next year or two and it's not turning recruits away or tearing the team apart.

MB probably needs a year to understand what the position of AD entails, and CK the same about the HC position at the UO. so another year with MB roaming the sidelines is a good thing in my opinion. plus, with the current roster of returning players (talented and more experienced), jc players coming on board to shore up what was lost from last years team, incoming preps to add depth, and finally the 09 schedule with the tougher matches taking place in autzen, MB can smell the roses and possibly a chance to make a run at the NC.

personally i hope MB doesn't call it quits just yet. whether he does or not, i feel the team is in good hands and on the right track with either him or CK. so why is it that the media/fans/bloogers are so quick to want him out or to let us know when he's leaving? who cares! it'll happen when it happens in the next couple of years.

go ducks!

Oregon's new coach?

1 more year!

This year's edition of Oregon Duck football should be outstanding.  Bellotti plans on going out on a high note.

Oregon finished well last year with an impressive Holiday Bowl victory, and are aiming for a BCS shot in 09-10.  The pieces are back and Ducks should be ready to roll.

Coach B has earned the right to leave on is terms.

Oregon's new coach?

Short of a National Championship, even though he's had teams that should've had a shot at one, Bellotti is the Dean of the Pac-10 coaches and has been one of the most successful college coaches over the last decade +. I hope Bellotti coaches at least one more year. He deserves it. I'd like to see what he and Chip Kelly could do together again next season. Duck football baby! I can't wait 'til September.

Oregon's new coach?

I agree it's going to come to a point where Mike Belloti is going to look really selfish here. Is he trying to work out a new deal or something or what? They need to hurry and decide and do what's best for the Duck Program! Not only are the recruits going to wondering who there playing for but the current players dunno who there playing for either. Not good for the team moral!!

Oregon's new coach?

Needs to let Oregon know what his plans are right now! I feel not knowing who is going to be the head coach next season hurt us during recruiting this year , Recruits want to know who they are going to be playing for at a school before they commit
