GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Late Thursday I spoke to Memphis AD R.C. Johnson about his coach's future.

John Calipari's name has been floated as a possible replacement at Kentucky. Our Gary Parrish lists Cal as a third choice for the Wildcats if they fail to get Billy Donovan or Tom Izzo.

"I've been asked about that all night," Johnson said after his team's regional semifinal loss to Missouri. "I'm not worried."

Nor should he be. Kentucky is making its job worse by the day. AD Mitch Barnhart is getting to that place where Mal Moore was with Alabama. The Bama job was overvalued because the aggravation wasn't worth it, until Moore landed Nick Saban. Is there a Saban out there for Kentucky? Doubtful. Of the immediate candidates, Donovan is the most likely to go, but he's still making the same money as Gillispie (probably more).

Calipari and Kentucky

Ok I have sat here and read blog after blog on Kentucky, thier fans, athletic director, but enough is enough.  Kentucky is a top tier coaching job.  Well you say we have fallen from grace!  Ok that may be true for the last 10 years, but the facts remain that Kentuckys has a history and still continues to make history.  We are the winningest program in D1.  No one can argue that.  Is North Carolina a few games behind?  Absolutly.  Does Kentucky have some or not the best facilities in college basketball.  True!  Do we have one of the greatest fan bases in all of college?  Yes! Another Fact!  If you dont believe that go to any SEC basketball tourney and look around!  Go to any away game and look around for that matter.  So with the facts alone a great coach would love to take the Job at Kentucky because those 3 factual examples are great recruiting tools.  So argue that!  No one knows who will take what job, all we can do is ask.  And as far a super star names, um-no!  we have never hired a super star name, we have made super star names.  I.E. Tubby Smith, Bily G, Rick Pitino, Eddie Sutton.  No one knew who these guys were until they came to Kentucky.  So get off the fans, and get off the AD!  Memphis, if Cali decides to come to KY, good luck in finding a coach that fits your up and coming program.  It is a lot harder than you think, because you have a great program, and you expect winning now, and that may change and you are scared that you will become hypocrites!  Even Rick P. said he wish he never made the decision to go to the PRO's in the late 90's!  Kentucky is a great place college sports, and i wish the best for everyone.  But no matter what, no one, no post can take the away what Kentucky Baasketball has accomplished, its rich basketball history, Adolph Rupp. "Mr. Wildcat" Bill Keightley!  These are ICONS in Kentucky basket ball, and the late MR Keightley was an equipment manager.  He is the reason for the Black K on our jerseys.  So nothing you can say, or do will change our minds of our team.  Like I said, we are FAN's, TRUE BLUE FANS! Go Cats and no matter what, we will be behind you 100% no matter what choice they make!

Agreed, halo. Ky is in a possible lose/lose situation. The best coaches out there are happy with their partners/employers. It really looks like the best they can do, and this could be pretty darn good, is to get one of their own back. Ford, Pelphry, Horn, these guys know what Ky bball and the crazy culture surrounding it is all about. They would be good 'ambassadors' for the program, since that seems to be a major part of the job requirement, and they can win games there.

Whether the winning measures up to what the blue fans expect, who knows? But they should be able to make the Dance every season. Ky fans just have to realize that the 'celebrity' they want may not be readily available, or recognized, at this point. Bringing back one of their own is a good stabilization move, at least, for now, and then that young guy could very well turn in the celebrity/ambassador that they seem to want so desperately.

Cal, Izzo, Billy D., none of these guys are going to Lex...

You offer no rational reason why Cal or Izzo would leave their current positions for Kentucky.  Cal would go there for less dollars?  He didn't want the job 2 years ago and he has a better situation at Memphis now and a stud class for '09.

Izzo won't leave MSU for Kentucky either.  Grew up in Michigan.  Worked on Judd Heathcote's staff forever and has no reason to pick up and enter the GIANT MESS in Lexington.

You have no clue if Patterson or Meeks will be back next year.  Orton is really nothing special.  The only thing you have going for you is that the SEC is putrid.

If Donovan passes, where do you go?  Travis Ford.....I can see recruits lining up to play for him.

Kentucky has now run off two quality coaches in 2+ years.  It's a circus.  Maybe you can get Knight or one of th Sutton's?

what an idiot... 'nor should he'?  he's not worried cal would leave for UK?  kidding me?  He'd go for less $$ and you know it.  Get over the pressure cooker thing.  as much as a pressure cooker, the candidates also know they will be treated like royalty.  All UK fans want to do is LOVE their coach.  BCG had it but he evidently hasn't grown up yet.

do some research before making comments about Izzo like he wouldn't leave.  U don't think his name has come up for a reason?  Of course, he'd listen.  U make it sound like he's not interested.

start over trying to rebuild kentucky?

uh....patterson, meeks, orton.....rebuild?  the word doesn't exist at kentucky....
