Reaction to the first coaches' poll

The first People’s Republic of Coaches secret ballot is out. What we're supposed to learn from it:

1. SEC fan must be throwing himself off various barbeque shacks in the South after learning the crushing news: The world’s best conference has only five teams in the first poll. Condolences, the world is gaining on you SEC. The Big 12, ACC and Pac-10 are tied for second with four teams each.

2. First you have to be ranked. That’s another way of saying Boise State is the early favorite to grab its second BCS bowl. The Broncos go in as the highest-ranked non-BCS school (No. 16) followed by No. 17 TCU, No. 18 Utah and No. 24 BYU.

There is hope. Utah was unranked at the beginning of 2008 before going undefeated.

3. The Big East got skunked. Not only did the Big East not have a ranked team, you have to look all the way down to the team with the 29th-most votes to find the league. Cincinnati is followed, in order, by Pittsburgh (30), West Virginia (31) and Rutgers (32).

How embarrassing is this? In the last three years, the Big East has had a team ranked in the top 10 in the preseason. West Virginia started there in 2006 (No. 7), 2007 (No. 6) and 2008 (No. 8). Two teams were ranked last season (South Florida and West Virginia) and three teams were ranked in 2007 (West Virginia, Louisville and Rutgers).

4. The SEC West is strong. Ole Miss is No. 10 which means, according to the poll, it is only the third-best team in the West. Alabama is No. 4 and LSU is No. 9.

5. I’m a little bit surprised that Kansas isn’t ranked.  The Jayhawks are favored by many to win the Big 12 North. The Jayhawks get No. 22 Nebraska at home and return the best pair of returning receivers in the country – Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier. KU started just out of the top 25 with the 26th-most votes.

6. Only in the coaches’ poll. Voters can vote for themselves No. 1 before they’ve played a game, but they can’t (or are encouraged not to) vote for their teams No. 1 in the final poll unless their team wins the BCS title game.

7. It’s murkier and more secret next year. In 2010, coaches will go back to keeping secret their final ballots. As I’ve written, BCS commissioners are going to try to convince the coaches to change their stance – or possibly be kicked out of the BCS.

Would love to know who didn't vote Florida No. 1 (the Gators got 53 of the 59 first-place votes), but it's a secret.

Reaction to the first coaches' poll

I hope the coaches poll is soon dismantled. It's starting to show that coaches don't even do this, but they have aids. It's becoming more of a popularity contest. Kansas should be in everyone's Top 25 poll, yet we aren't. We return two of the best receievers and a great quarterback. I don't see how Notre Dame and Nebraska can be ahead of us.

Florida would have to lose twice not to be in the BCS title. Just like last year, it's all about when you lose. The love for Tebow by the media will still have him in the BCS even if they lose one game. I can see it now. Florida lose to LSU and someone like Penn State goes undefeated. Florida will get in over Penn State because of Tebow. I'm not bashing Tebow, he's a great great player. I'm bashing the system. Please people, stop going to these meaningless bowl games. Give us a playoff. In college football, rivaries are huge. It wouldn't make the regular season any different. No matter if Alabama's in the playoff, we still want to beat Auburn.

Stop ripping off college football fans and give us a playoff. Just like politics, it's up to us to send a message. 25,000 at the Sugar Bowl give us a playoff. RTR!

Reaction to the first coaches' poll

Duckstat quit crying about the rankings. Oregon sucks and is irrevelant in college football. Let me say it again so you can understand. OREGON IS IRREVELANT IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL. Ok, now that we've settlet the issue try to win the Pac 1 conference or just stfu. SEC teams don't have to travel because we play the best conference schedule in the nation and the Pac 1 doesn't, that's why you guys play tougher ooc games. If USC didn't they would never play for a title. Why do you think they got left out of the Championship game so much? It's the strength of schedule chump. Maybe you guys shouldn't play Washington and Washington St. and don't give me the Notre Dame shit, and finally Ohio St. has proved to be the SEC little biatch. Good luck during the season, I'm gonna sit back relax and watch Bama, UF, or LSU win a 4th straight MNC.

That's one of many reasons why you don't get a vote. What could have possibly happened in the off season for USC to jump ahead of Florida...losing your starting quarterback and half of your D' makes you better than the team that won it all returning almost everyone? That's laughable.

Reaction to the first coaches' poll

Put down your crack pipe and slowly back away from the preseason polls!  You must be living in a world where the sky is a different color and the people are little midgets and they follow a yellow brick road.  We get LSUX and bamer at home and you guys arent even in the running this year...and since your coach will probably leave in the middle of the night midway through the season, not much hope for next year either!!!

Reaction to the first coaches' poll

I don't give much credence to the opinions of coaches who should be spending almost all of their time prepping their teams for the upcoming season instead of rating the top schools in the nation, most of whom they won't be playing.  Still, since this is the way to get into the big money bowls, better to play the beauty contest game than not.

It's ironic that the BSU/Oregon game becomes almost the entire season for both teams, especially fot the Broncos.  Both are getting lots of love right now, and the loser will probably feel like the ugly girl on Prom night.

The sad thing is that such beauty pageants only encourage top schools to schedule "powerhouses" like Charleston Southern and the like rather than risk blowing their ratings by losing to a REAL team.  It's bad for the sport.

Reaction to the first coaches' poll

OK, Mack Brown had to be one of the ones not voting Florida #1.  In

fact, he probably voted them and USC really low, just in case.  Now, until

October,  he'll be voting OU #2 behind himself but after that, just depends

on who wins in Dallas.  Would he vote an undefeated OU #100?  Sure!

Secret balots, along with no playoffs, are killing our sport!

Admittedly, it was another dumb joke by Dodd directed at Southerners, but seriously ... you don't really know what he's talking about?! There's barbecue "shacks" all over the South. He was referring to the little roadhouse smoke "shacks" that you come across out in the country - little rural barbecue restaurants in small towns. You often see the smoker out front off to a side. Just type in "barbecue shack" at Yahoo, and you'll see more of them than you care to see ...
You need to get out of the house a little more if you've lived in the South 40 years and don't know what a barbecue shack is.
