Florida favored to beat Charleston Southern

OK, that you knew. But you didn't know that the Gators were favored by 73 in their opener.

That's news because you won't -- in fact, you can't -- find a line on the game in Vegas. That's because sports books don't list lines involving I-AA opponents.

"Charleston not a board team, not one of the 120 I-A teams," explained a spokesman for Las Vegas Sports Consultants, the company that largely sets the lines for some of the bigger sports books. "You might able to find it (a line) offshore somewhere."

The line comes from USA Today's Danny Sheridan who I think would post favorites in cockroach fights (or the odds of Rick Pitino impregnating someone within the last six years). Not to cast blame here. We are talking about the gaming industry, where there really are no heroes.

Anyway, my guy at LVSC says if there was a legit line on the game, Florida would be a 50-55 point favorite. Theoretically.

"It's against gaming regulations to post odds on a non-board team," he said.

Thank God, there is some purity left in Las Vegas.

I agree. The early season scheduling of cupcake teams is a joke. Every major program does it though. They're used basically as pre-season games/scrimmages to warm up before conference play starts. NCAA should not allow these games to be scheduled, but until they do, teams like Florida, Texas, Ohio State, Penn St. Oklahoma and all the other major programs will continue to schedule them.

I was at UF actually, attending games and enjoying my final year of college. Thankfully I graduated right before the Ron Zook years. I know succeeding a Gator legend like Spurrier is tough but Zook was quite possibly the worst college coach (outside of Dave Wanstedt) that I have ever seen. Those games were tough to watch every Saturday.

Being a Gator alum and season ticket holder for 50 years, I must agree with all the disrespect posted about playing Charleston Southern the first game of the season.  I particularly dislike having to pay for the tickets to the usual first two Gator games, but just like the NFL a season ticket holder must pay for the first four pre-season games.  What I must disagree with is the statement that the Gators play cupcakes all season long!  Must be from a disgruntled Big Ten or Big 12 fan, both of which were defeated by the Gators for the national championship in 2006 and 2008.  Remember, folks outside those conferences generally refer to these two as the BBBT - Big, Bad, Big Ten or Big, Bad, Big twelve!  Take your pick!

Honestly, people need to quit complaining about playing 1 1AA team a year. Many schools do it just for the money. Is it wrong? From a pure football stance, sure, it sucks. But many big time universities use revenue from football to fund tons of other sports. They use football money to offer scholarships to athletes in other sports that are not self sustaining. Football enables other athlets in other sports to get free educations while being able to participate in the sport that they chose. They have to have a set number of home games a year to be able to make that kind of money to sustain the other sports. It isnt going away, complaining does nothing. I have problems with teams playing 2 of those teams a year to pad wins, thats insane. But 1 to be able to provide for other sports? Doesnt bother me. Something else that bothers me is some in the SEC think they shouldnt schedule tough OOC teams because of the perceived strength of the SEC. Until UGA played ASU last year on the road they hadn't been west of the Mississippi since the 60s! Florida hasnt left their state since 1991 for a OOC game. That sounds terrible but they do play FSU every year. It isnt UFs fault FSU hasnt lived up to the billing this decade. But I would like to see a OOC game involving UF or LSU vs USC PSU OSU Texas, OU, etc. Those big time games have a ton of hype, vault teams into the national title picture (happened both years OSU and Texas played) and are great games for the fans.

Actually those are not one in the same. Charleston Southern is a D-1AA school, Navy is a D-1 independent that will prolly win at least 8 games this year.

Gator fans where were you in 2001?

I was 11 and carefree. Football had no meaning.

Then 2003 rolled around and I saw Chris Leak play against the Miami Hurricanes in a game that they should have won had it not been for a terrible coach somewhere in Illinois. That was the official beginning of my Gator fan-dom. And no, I won't claim that the Gator's have the best team again this year until they win the National Championship. Until they do that, they are not the best team...

Like your Buckeyes.

I see you're a fan of Army.  Me too, mainly because I spent 20+ years in the Army.  So I am conerned with their graduation rates, but more specifically what they do after graduation.  The only reason I care a little about Florida's grad rate is that I don't want too many of the key players leaving early.  College is supposed to be the tool to a good living.  Yeah, I laughed when I typed that also.  But if a guy can go make millions after a year or two of college, well, it's served it's purpose.

Here's hoping that the NCAA makes FBS play FBS schools an FCS play FCS, in other words no 1A can play a 1AA and have it go into their FBS ranking. Here's hoping that your Gators cut down on their string of arrests. Wanna bet that Charleston Southern has a higher GRADUATION rate????
