Was Texas Tech insensitive to American Indians?

Posted on: September 8, 2009 11:00 pm

Some might think so after seeing the cover of last week's game program.

It depicts Mike Leach, the school president (I think) and some mascots appearing to chase a frightened American Indian. Last week's opponent was the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

Was Texas Tech insensitive to American Indians?

I can't help but wonder. Does this mean that the New York Yankees are insensitve to people from the north east?

And the Wizards are insensitive to Harry Potter

Was Texas Tech insensitive to American Indians?

Hmm...if they were playing Grambling State or Georgia Southern, they'd likely have been chasing a tiger or an eagle.  You know, since those (like a Sioux indian) are the teams' mascots?  Get a grip.  Next, get a clue.

Was Texas Tech insensitive to American Indians?

I apologize to Boston College because I still don't understand the difference between a BC Catholic and a Notre Dame Catholic...

The difference is twelve national championships

Dodd, it always seems like you are trying to stir things up regarding Texas Tech.  Why?

Was Texas Tech insensitive to American Indians?

Andyt23!

I'm calling you out, Boy!

YOUR AVATAR IS INSENSITIVE TO PENGUINS!

Didn't the movie "Happy Feet" mean anything to you!    Penguin on Penguin violence has got to stop; No more of this "black white black white slap the head water shot" stuff continuing!

what?  We're talking about Indians?  Oh, I thought they were called Native Americans now.   I get confused because I thought we were in a friendly competitive environment and it is okay to make fun of each other's mascots - but if that's not allowed anymore...

I apologize to the Oklahoma Sooners for the fact that I've called your mascot out for praising cheaters (the Sooners, not the coaches)
I apologize to the Texas Tech Red Raiders for belittling their mascot when confusing him as a cartoon character named Yosemite Sam
I apologize to the Missouri Tigers as I normally call them the Misery Tigers.
I apologize to the Kansas JayHawks because it doesn't look like a Jay Bird, doesn't look like a Hawk of any sort, but kinda looks like one of those crows Heckle and Jeckle painted blue, except without the cigar which I guess is kinda PC now....
I apologize to the Nebraska Cornhuskers for the many rude names I've used "Corn" in considering I was 40 before I finally saw my alma mater #1 finally beat them (1962 to 2003)
I apologize to Iowa State because I don't want them to feel left out
I apologize to the Texas A&M Aggies because just saying that reminds me of a half dozen Aggies jokes, most of which I can't repeat here.
I apologize to my Alma Mater #3 Tulsa because they don't know that Hurricanes come from the Sea and they should be called the Tornadoes (like Tomatoes?)
I apoligize to Auburn Tigers because of their bipolar disorder sometimes call themselves Warhawks (which is LA Monroe's mascot...)
I apologize to the Scottsdale Fightin' Artichokes because I have been hurt by a falling crate of Artichokes when I worked in the Fleming warehouse and it hurt!
I apologize to the Ohio State Buckeyes - wait, no I don't, I KNOW that's cannibus on the back of your helmets...
I apologize to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors for being insensitive to islander sexuality and/or big guys that dance in grass skirts
I apologize to USC for all the times I've said "here's a used USC prope-A"
I apologize to the Oregon State Beavers for well, that whole double meaning thang
I apologize to Virginia Tech Hokies because I do think that their mascot is kinda "hokie" but their color combination is atrocious!
I apologize to Stanford because it would be un-PC not to be PC to the second most PC school in the U.S.
I apologize to California Golden Bears because I'd be pretty pissed if I had to wait as long to get a beer as it takes in Berkley...
I apologize to Arizona State Sun Devils because my Lord Satan (not the Alabama coach) obviously didn't hold up his end of the bargain when you sold your souls to him and made him the mascot of your school...with an Errol Flynn pointing mustache to boot!
I apologize to the San Diego State Aztecs because your mascot is usually what I call people from Texas Tech.
I apologize to Vanderbilt Commodores because I usually avoid writing about them because "Vanderbilt Commodores" is just too long to write out without any meaning...
I apologize to TCU Horned Frogs because I DO KNOW that your mascot is not really an amphibean of promiscuous oreintation...
I apologize to the SEC because they lack originality and have not one but two teams called Tigers and two teams called Bulldogs; but at least they have three unique mascots of Razorbacks, Commodores, and Rebels not found in FBS/Div 1.
I apologize to Penn State Nitany Lions because the school is still too cheap to use one of the coolest school logos on those incredibly bland "generic" uniforms which kinda personifies the whole blandness of the Big 10 anyway?
I apologize to South Carolina Gamecocks because on so many levels I've bastardized their mascot but more importantly because I know you also want to be know as equally as a "USC" and not confused with that other school on the complete other side of the country
I apologize to New Mexico State because you have to travel to another state (El Paso) just to catch a plane to go to your games
I apologize to Tulane Green Wave because quite frankly it is MORE fun to miss the game and stay on Bourbon Street.
I apologize to Boston College because I still don't understand the difference between a BC Catholic and a Notre Dame Catholic...

and

I apologize to Notre Dame because - well, no I don't.

Was Texas Tech insensitive to American Indians?

nt_eagle,

You're really hung up on the enrollment figure, aren't you?  I find it funny that Angelo State (a member of the TTU system) only has 6,400 students (compared to your 34,000) but has a larger endowment than your crappy little commuter campus as of fiscal year 2008.  Also, it's sad when local high schools have nicer football stadiums than that feed lot y'all are using off the interstate (which also appears to serve as a giant billboard for local companies seeking a good spot to advertise).

Then again, what would you expect out of a university whose unofficial student moto is "you can't spell #unt without UNT"?
(# = c)

Paulie:

I do have a Native American heritage. Why should it matter one way or another?

Was Texas Tech insensitive to American Indians?

They would probably depict a tiger or an eagle since those are the respective mascots of those two universities.

Was Texas Tech insensitive to American Indians?

As long as the "Redskins" are the name of the Pro team in Washington then everything else is insignificant! You can't have it both ways.

Was Texas Tech insensitive to American Indians?

I don't care one way or another about the original topic, but I do love reading the messages from all the bitter, bitter, Longhorns. Cry me a river you bunch of babies. At least when the Oklahoma Sooners come to Jones Stadium & lose a game, they take it like men. You Horns haven't stopped boo hooing since Halloween 2008.
