South Carolina rising

It has taken a while, longer than anyone expected, but South Carolina finally has a personality.

The Old Ball Coach now looks like the Long Haul Coach.

In his fifth year, Steve Spurrier got the victory he needed to make the Gamecocks a threat in the SEC. No. 4 Ole Miss went down 16-10 changing the identity of the conference's dark horse. Might as well give South Carolina a shot at that title after it used defense, again, to shut down down the high-powered Rebels. In its three wins, South Carolina has allowed 26 points.

Gone, for now, are Ole Miss' dreams of an SEC title. Anyone who watched South Carolina stifle the Rebels all night can't give Ole Miss a chance to overtake LSU and Alabama in the SEC West. South Carolina's Cliff Matthews and Eric Norwood each had two sacks.

Spurrier had it all wrong about the preseason all-SEC quarterback. Or at least his football operations guy did. Jevan Snead never could get going completing only seven of 21.

We know he has a defense. Spurrier might finally have his quarterback. While Stephen Garcia misfired on several passes and fumbled away an opportunity, he did throw for 220 yards.

This is how it's done, Lou. This looks like a real turnaround. South Carolina beat its second-ever top five opponent and first since 1981. The schedule is favorable too with three home games in the next four [against South Carolina State, Kentucky and Vanderbilt]. South Carolina should be 5-1 when it goes to Alabama on Oct. 17.

This is South Carolina's third 3-1 start in the last four years. Now the Spur Dog has to maintain the momentum.

South Carolina rising

Instigator89,

What's a joke is an idiot from Florida spouting off about the history of Clemson - South Carolina football.  Anyone who knows anything about this series knows it's the annual chicken kickin'.

You are the first SEC fan I've ever heard of who says that losing consistantly to an ACC school is proof the SEC is brutally powerful.  Absolutely brilliant.

CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY THAT THE COCKS HAVEN'T HAD A GREAT QB OR THEY WOULD HAVE WON EVERY GAME AGAINST SOFT CLEMSON

Just where do you suppose Spurrier will find a great quarterback who wants to spend four years being called a "COCK".....and.....if Clemson is soft.....wouldn't that make the..... "COCKS".....jet puffed?  They do nearly always lose to Clemson, you know.

CLEMSON'S A JOKE...ONLY REASON THEY EVER BEAT SC IS BECAUSE SC HAS HAD TO SLOG THRU A BRUTAL SEC SCHEDULE WHILE CLEMSON LOSES THRU A BASKETBALL CONFERENCE, THEN CLEMSON HAS TO HAVE THIS WIN TO KEEP FROM BEING A TOTAL LAUGHINGSTOCK AND THEIR COACH GETTING FIRED, WHILE THE COCKS GAIN NOTHING WITH A WIN EXCEPT A W AGAINST AN INFERIOR TEAM; CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY THAT THE COCKS HAVEN'T HAD A GREAT QB OR THEY WOULD HAVE WON EVERY GAME AGAINST SOFT CLEMSON

Great wins.....One coaches last year and the current coaches first year!

Most programs are in good shape when a coach gets FIRED!

No sweat, OSU won the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP hte nexy year!

How many of those does South Carolina have?

Heck, how many top 10 finishes does South Carolina have?

South Carolina is the red-headed step sister in its own state! Clemson rules the state!

Excuses, excuses.  When you can't argue head to head, throw some other team in the mix and let them make your argument for you.  The fact is:  Ohio State has never beat South Carolina in a bowl game.  They are 0-2.  End of story.

OK crazyron1,

In defense of Ohio State's two losses to South Carolina, both were in the Outback Bowl, where the Big Ten sends it's #3 team.  To finish third in the Big Ten is unusual for Ohio State so both wins obviously came in down years for Ohio State.  How'd South Carolina do against the Big Ten's #3 team last year?  They were rolled 31-10 by Iowa.

As for bragging about US Grant, isn't that the same as naming every other street in Atlanta after Jimmy Forest Gump Carter or naming an interstate in Grand Rapids "Gerald Ford Freeway"?

Congratulations to South Carolina on the great win.  But just as it was premature to hand Ole Miss a Top 5 ranking and the keys to the SEC West kingdom, it is also rather early to be calling South Carolina a legitimate SEC contender with a shutdown defense.  Dodd has chosen to quote that South Carolina allowed only 26 points in its three wins, but let's not forget that a relatively weak UGA squad(that couldn't hang two touchdowns on Okie State) dropped a nice, fat 41 points on them no more than two weeks ago.

Yeah we've beaten LSU ('88), Vandy and Kentucky!
Go BUCKS and remember Les Miles and Urban "Cryer" Meyer are native Ohioians. The same state that gave us U.S. Grant and my personal hero William Tecumseh Sherman. Just like they kicked the Souths ass so the NORTH shall rise again and start kicking SEC butt!!
