Brian Kelly addresses Notre Dame connection

It wasn't much but Cincinnati's Brian Kelly spoke about the swirling rumors that he is headed to Notre Dame sooner rather than later.

"As far as the rumors go, our kids don't pay much at because I don’t," Kelly said on Monday's Big East conference call. "We’re humble that our names would be associated with programs. Our kids have become immune to it."

A lot of you probably noticed that Kelly didn't say the words: "I'm not going to Notre Dame." Of course, what does that mean when Nick Saban said the same thing about Alabama?

What's all this speculation about Kelly.  I have heard from several sources within CBS that Urban Meyer is a lock to go there if Weis is canned.  Also, it's good the see that the Saban/Miami/Alabama situation still gets under Dodd's and every other sports reporter's skin.  One of these days you will realize that coaches will never admit to leaving their current job while the season is underway and will tell reporters anything to shut them up.  Which, by the way, never works.

1) when you say, "he stays here..." its obvious you are not impartial, and thats fine.

2) Weis himself has already proven one thing as you put it, "he gets all the talent he wants".  That right there is why Kelly would leave.

You are right, it wouldnt be about the money but if its talent he wants, he will get 10x the talent in South Bend than he will at Cincinnati.  Thats not a knock on Cincinnati, its just the way it is.

I could see Ohio State fans collecting enough money to buy out Weiss and then helping Kelly pack up for a move to northern Indiana because he has made the Bearcats the best team in Ohio.  Then maybe the Buckeyes could get back into national title contention.

Any coach not currently at an SEC powerhouse (Saban, Kiffin, Meyer, Richt and Miles) USC or Oklahoma and Texas would kill to coach at ND.  Money is money and no school has more of it than ND, so you're going to get paid.  And if you manage to win you become a legend, and by some miracle win a National Championship you're elevated to Rockne type status.  Notre Dame can get better players than Cincinnati, and Kelly could actually coach them to their talent levels.  Besides, Kelly can go undefeated at Cincy and not get a BCS championship shot.  No way in hell an undefeated Notre Dame doesn't play for a national title.

Note that while in the "lesser Big East" WVU only won two outright titles in his 7 years, and he never was undefeated within the conference.  Unlike WVU, where he took over a program that empahiszed speed over power, he he has had to do a complete overhaul of the type of football his prdecessor played. He has two natural freshman as starters at QB ... give him another year or two before making any complete comparisons.

Dude - what are you talking about.
Get your facts straight... from 1970-2000 (your dates of choice)

They played Michigan 19 times.
They played Miami 19 times.
LSU 9 times
FSU 4 times
Ga Tech 10 times
etc etc etc

They were 15-7 against the Big8/Big12
In fact has a winning record versus every conference, from Big 10 71-33-1, to SEC 19-11.

Why would Kelly NOT want the ND job?  First off, he has an Irish name, which puts in in the forefront of the discussion right there!  As far as winning at ND, a GOOD coach/recruiter not only CAN win, but WILL win.  ND is still a magic name in CFB, but their coaching hires have been abysmally bad.  The 10 year extension to Weis was a stunningly bad decision and I knew it at the time, not in hindsight.  It's equally clear that Kelly has the talent to become then "next Urban Meyer" in CFB if he goes to ND.  If Harbaugh leaves Stanford, I believe it would be for the Michigan job, not ND.  His style of football would fit the UM mold far better than RichRod's.

Good one TL...I am sick of all the Charlie Weis fat jokes too and I am an Irish fan. Good grief get some new material. Pretty lame not to mention childish.

As for Brian Kelly....leave or not. The talk around Notre Dame is his name has been bandied about but so have a few other names. The deed is not done and make no mistake about it is NOT a done deal despite the rest of America saying so. Father Jenkins makes the call. Despite the public outcry from ND alum about inviting President Obama to the graduation ceremonies he did it anyway so that should tell you he has a mind of his own and is not that affected by the criticism from ND fans, alums and in particular, major donors to the University.  ND has the money to buy out his contract and his assistants and frankly it is Father Jenkins fault it is so much because he gave him the extension on his contract.  I am not a Charlie Weis hater nor am I president of his fan club. All I am saying is he has not delivered. He is paid well to do that so it seems pretty cut and dry to me. The trouble is it wont be. This is a year when there are several very good coaches out there who may be interested in the job. When Charlie was hired that was not the case. Enough with the Urban story. That is a tiresome tale too. It wasnt just about the money with him he demanded the Admissions Dept relax academic standards and Notre Dame refused to do so. ENough said. It is a known fact what the ND coach has to deal with...admissions, intense pressure, etc. Is Brian Kelly interested? Only he can answer if he is and if he is up to the the enormous challenge of the job. The good thing is though ND has talent. I would however take a good long look at your so called Defensive genius. Jon Tenuta has been a bitter disappointment too. Should know fairly quickly what is going to happen. Go Irish!

Plus undefeated seasons that are not good enough to reach the BCS championship.  An undefeated ND gets to the ultimate game.  Even a one-loss ND team gets in if there is only one Big 6 undefeated.  A one loss Cincy team would never get in.

He could go to the big name program in Michigan, and try and make an even bigger name for himself, while also getting $2M more per year......
Half a million more a year.
