Brian Kelly addresses Notre Dame connection

It wasn't much but Cincinnati's Brian Kelly spoke about the swirling rumors that he is headed to Notre Dame sooner rather than later.

"As far as the rumors go, our kids don't pay much at because I don’t," Kelly said on Monday's Big East conference call. "We’re humble that our names would be associated with programs. Our kids have become immune to it."

A lot of you probably noticed that Kelly didn't say the words: "I'm not going to Notre Dame." Of course, what does that mean when Nick Saban said the same thing about Alabama?

Brian Kelly addresses Notre Dame connection

I think the real question for Coach Brian Kelly is do you want to go to Notre Dame for the money, and just be another name of great coaches? Do you want to win 8 or 9 games a year and have the media crying for your head?

Or would you stay in Cincinnati and be THE head coach; be the guy who single handidly built a program, and will be forever immortalized in Cincinnati. Be a god to all Bearcat fans and have everyone compared to him.

I agree with your point, but I don't think coaches at the highest levels think like we do.  They have massive egos.  Pick any college coach who's doing well & I'd bet he's convinced HE is the guy who could turn that program around.

I am not a Notre Dame fan, I am a Nebraska football fan.  That being said I have a few ideas on the Notre Dame football program and who would want to coach there or perhaps it would be better to say why would anyone want to coach there.

From my perspective, between 1970 and 2000, Notre Dame for 33 years had a very mediocre to easy strength of schedule. Southern Cal was usually the only real power football team they would face most seasons.  The rest were the three military pushovers and two or three generally overated Big Ten teams with a few weak sisters thrown in to fill the schedule.  Recently, since 2000. I think there was a general admittance by Notre Dame athletic folks that the scheduled had to be strengthend if they were to retain any kind of "football power" allure among the general football fan public.

So now the Notre Dame football coach is faced with the following:
1. A considerably stronger schedule than those glory years of past coaches.
2. A training table and advancement to the NFL that is now matched by 50 or more programs.
3. A recruitment program that is expected to be "cleaner" than 95% of other programs. Or at least smarter in hiding errors.
4. A faculty where it is hard to find passing grades without effort outside of certain sport coaching/medicine majors.
5. Be honest, where would anyone rather spend the winter South Bend or Florida?
6. A fan base that still expects Notre Dame football to finish in the top ten every year and win a national title every 4 years.

IMHO Charlie Weis is a good coach and deserves better treatment than being given. I have followed Jack and Jim Harbaugh since the early days at WKU and think very highly of their entire extended family. You can't find any better folks in coaching today.  I would never wish that Jim would somehow be talked into coaching Notre Dame as I don't think it is the pinacle of college coaching but a death trap for coaches.

let's be honest, regardless of current states of the respective programs, the ND job is a huge uptick than Cincy.  The hot rumor is Stoops, that's who i want.  go get him Irish!

To have Brian Kelly go from my favorite team to my least favorite team would be heartbreaking. He's done such a nice job here in Cincinnati, and we would be a middle of the road 7-5 team at best without him. Cincinnati has made Brian Kelly, and more importantly Brian Kelly has made Cincinnati. Stay here, Brian. Do what you know is best in your heart.

Be careful, Dodd! When word gets out that you have NEVER told a lie, someone might nail you to a cross. How wonderful it would be, to be perfect like you.
