Goodbye, Saint Bobby. You deserved better.

This is not the way Bobby Bowden wanted to go out. You could already see it in the early reports that the great coach was expected to retire.

Saint Bobby went to a lunch “for about an hour” Monday afternoon with president T.K. Wetherell and athletic director Randy Spetman. He came back the soon-to-be former coach at Florida State.

It was a gentlemen’s knee capping. You leave the office the Bobfather of a football dynasty. You come back with your career in a pine box with a press release draped over it. According to reports, they gave the coach a choice: become a ceremonial figure with little day-to-day input into the program or retire.

Thirty-four years and they don’t even let you go out on your own terms. No farewell tour, just – farewell. Bowden wanted one more year, one more shot. What was it going to hurt? Florida State wasn’t going to win the national championship, probably wasn’t going to win the ACC, but Bowden deserved a chance a season-long goodbye wave from his parade float.

The administration is the one who put the program in this situation why not let it play out? That’s why the school had a coach-in-waiting. Jimbo Fisher was never Bobby’s idea anyway. It seemed like a seamless transition. Then the seams ripped.

Recruiting went downhill. Defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews lost his touch. The ACC got better and beat the Seminoles with relish. If Saturday’s beat down at Florida was the final straw, then that was foolish and reactive.

What did you think was going to happen, Team Wetherell/Spetman? This program has bigger problems than Bobby hanging on one more year. It needs to start going head-to-head with Florida in recruiting again. It needs a defensive coordinator hired by Fisher.

What you did Monday, should have been done three years ago. At this point, what’s the difference? The transition to Fisher could have been made in 2010 with Bobby accepting retirement rocking chairs from adoring rivals at midfield before every road game. They could have made that final home game next year like a Super Bowl. It would have sold out, something that hasn’t happened in a while at Doak.

Bobby’s last home game will go down as a win over Maryland that clinched a bowl berth before about 30,000 empty seats. The program had come full circle. No one cared before Bobby got there. They were starting to care less at the end.

A wise man once said that an attendance decline will get a coach in trouble more than anything. There’s no dignity in that, no glory.

Sure, Bowden let it get that way but so did his bosses. They deserve some of the blame. Let’s just hope they picked up the tab for Bobby’s farewell lunch.

It was quick and quiet. Something tells me Bobby never wanted to go out that way.

Goodbye, Saint Bobby. You deserved better.

Dodd,

You are so full of crap.  You have no insight into what really happened.  Let go of your crystal ball and find out the real facts, not what you think is poetic.  You are pathetic, a poor representative of the sports writing profession.  How about being accurate and stop trying for the conflict and pathos.

You are a wind-bag.

Goodbye, Saint Bobby. You deserved better.

Gators have lots of class, it's all low but they have lots of it. Face it, at a school where the guys couldn't get laid in a women's prison with a fist full of pardons what would you expect? They have no respect for Bowden, They don't even want Spurrier to speak his mind any more. Let's see how well Urban does without Tim Teabag. Did you hear the phone ring? Coach Meyer, Notre Dame on line one.

Goodbye, Saint Bobby. You deserved better.

Thank You, Coach Bowden, for all you have done for FSU football. He put this team on the map, he put the spear on the side of the helmet. He put together a 14 year string of top 5 finishes including 2 National Championships. As an Alum I want to thank the coach for all he has done. He made FSU a power in college football. We wish him well. Thank You, Coach. Go Noles!

Goodbye, Saint Bobby. You deserved better.

As a Seminole fan , I would like to say thank coach Bowden for the glory years through The 90's to the 2000 National Championship ! There are plenty of good memories during those years. Two national championships and several other close or missed opportunities to win others.
Some bad luck, poor decisions , poor recruiting and less than average coaching from subordinates haven't helped. Losing a key coach to Georga didn't help ! FSU never really recovered from that break up . Recruiting has not been the same since !
Jimbo Fisher will be a good coach for now, however FSU needs a blockbuster defensive coach ASP., before the recruiting season starts.
Coach Bowden will always be remembered for establishing FSU as a solid football program over the years . It is sad to see his career end this way on a negative note . He does deserve better . I know Nole fan's have been diappionted for several years with the program and are looking for a real change. But let's not forget about the man's success and where this program came from in the early 70's.
Lets hope that our team will get it's act together and win the next bowl game for FSU and send coach Bowden home on a winning note ! After all these years its always been FSU and the face of a winner in coach Bowden ! I hope the next coach will be able to cary this football program to even greater heights in the next season. Go Noles !!!

This was long over due.

Sorry, but Bobby did not deserve better, he deserved to be fired long ago. Over the last twenty plus years, only his alma mater and its chief cross state rival have had dirtier programs. The NCAA should have dusted off the death penalty long about the time Reinard Wilson was delivering cheap shops on opposing QBs. Good riddence to bad rubbish. It is better to have a team that loses the right way than wins the wrong way.

Goodbye, Saint Bobby. It;s about time!

I'd have to disagree with this article and the depiction of Bobby Bowden. In my opinion, Bobby should have stepped down a year or two ago. I believe that the only reason Bowden stuck around this long was to try to outlast Paterno and take the record for the most wins in college football. Bobby built up a great program but I beleive in the end his legacy and beating Paterno meant more to him than the possible negative effects to the Florida State program. I fully believe that if Paterno retired and had less wins last year, you wouldn't see this debacle with Florida State this year because Bowden would have called it quits.

BOBBY did NOT WANT a FAREWELL TOUR!!

Dodd misses the biggest piece of the situation. Bowden did NOT want next year as a farewell tour. That means he either was planning on staying AFTER 2010 or he was going to step down after this year. I predict the former.

I love Bowden to death but the decline started when HE decided to go around the nepotism rule and have his inept son hired to be the Offensive Coordinator that did not 'officially' report to Bobby himself. Bringing back a failed coach in Chuck Amato and asking Mickey to stay on a year or 2 longer than he wanted (especially after the death of his son) was starting to look more like selfishness than bad management by the AD etc.

Bowden was not going to leave if not asked for probably a few more years. He always said that he would get out if he started losing. 22 games in 4 years? How bad did it need to get.

I wish him well but what was going to be the difference in the next 2-3 years? The recruits are not coming until there is a Head Coach (not lame duck Head Coach), No Head Coach in Waiting,No Executive Head Coach (Amato) and a send off to the DC (Mickey)?

What was FSU to do?

Goodbye, Saint Bobby. You deserved better.

If Fl St was smart they would drop jimbo Fisher and bring in Brian Kelly, with him they could recruit with Urban and make Fl St relevant again...Jimbo is never going to get it done
