Oh no, he didn't: Dunlap is latest Gator charged

Posted on: December 1, 2009 10:06 am

This wouldn’t be such a big deal if Brandon Spikes didn't ultimately decide his sentence.

This wouldn’t near as big a thing if, you know, Florida weren’t playing for the SEC title.

Heads might turn the other way if there wasn’t a recent history in Gainesville, if the football world weren’t waiting to see what Urban Meyer was going to do with his latest star run afoul of the law.

But it is a big deal, a huge deal. Carlos Dunlap, you messed up. You went Tony LaRussa on the entire Gator Nation by getting one of the sloppiest DUI’s in recent memory.

Asleep at the wheel?

With the engine running?

While the car was in gear?

3:25 in the morning?

Dude, that’s not drunk. That’s falling down, can’t-count-backwards-fro-100 drunk. Allegedly, of course. Certainly not exactly what you expect, though, from the BCS title game defensive MVP and one of the team leaders. Not what you want from the guy tied for the team lead in sacks (seven).  A guy who could be a first-round draft choice.

Carlos, aren’t you supposed to celebrate after beating Alabama? Another stomp of the Seminoles hardly seems worth the Captain Morgan.

But as coaches like to say, hey, they’re still college kids.

This college kid put his team at further risk of losing the SEC championship game. If Dunlap is suspended – a big if given recent history – I have this image of Trent Richardson and Mark Richardson sweeping around the end. Dunlap’s absence would give tight end Colin Peek, a Florida guy from Ponte Vedra Beach, more room. Obviously, it would have to easier protecting Greg McElroy.

The next step is up to Meyer. After the way he handled the Spikes situation, he absolutely cannot go light on Dunlap. That’s what happens when the star linebacker has to suspended himself. Remember that one after the eye gouge? Spikes was suspended for a half (laughable), then Spikes took himself out of the entire game.

If the Florida coach stops short of anything less than a one-game suspension in this case, then the SEC may step in.

I’m kidding, of course, on the SEC thing. The outrage from outside the program would be enough of a distraction. The Urbanator is smart enough to limit the damage. See ya, Carlos. We’ll check in with you, maybe, in the BCS title game or the Sugar Bowl.

Dodd... It amazes me how you stll don't understand the Spikes situation... weeks later.  Put down your playskool typewriter and milk and try doing some research for a change.

" I know the Gators are playing for a national title, but take a cue from Mack Brown at Texas "

Or Augie Garrido.....What ever did happen to Augie?  He wasn't spended or fired was he???  Odd, adults can drink and drive in Texas and yet the student players in Florida can't?

It's the police's problem to deal with....If the kids still in jail for the game, he can't play.   If he's out on bail, get him back to work....Life goes on.

Well put, tomasbb. Myself and many other Ohio Bobcat alumni are very proud to have Frank "the Tank" Solich as our football coach! Let's just hope that they can give LeFevour and the rest of the Chippewas a tough, close game in the MAC championship later this week. I was at the 2006 MAC Championship a few years ago when LeFevour lit up the Ohio defense in a 31-10 rout. I wasn't holding out much hope for OU this year to have much of a chance to beat CMU until their very impressive showing against Temple this past week. Go Cats!

Urban should handle this like JoePa would. Do nothing now. Just say you are gathering the facts. Then if the charges are true, have him clean the stadium after the game.

yes.  Sergio left the scene of an accident.  One where he crashed into an apartment with his car.  Which would have killed the tennant had she been on her computer in her bedroom..... at 2:35 in the morning.

Sergio (and Texas) got lucky nobody saw it... and his claim was that he was texting and driving.  So Mack starts crusading... "Don't text and drive... .it can kill lives."  Please.  This would have been his 2nd DUI had he been caught and Mack would have been forced to kick off his best defensive player.  If you really think he was texting, you are blinded by your burnt orange glasses.  Why would he have left the scene?
Anyway, in this sitiuation, most coaches would give a player of this caliber a one game suspension.  Including Mack.  I'm not saying it's right, but just a harsh reality of college football.

Tom Osborne (squeaky clean Tom) didn't even give Lawrence Phillips a game suspension before the '96 Title game.  and Phillips beat the crap out of his girlfriend. Sad.

Dodd, were you drunk when you wrote this?

Dennis Dodd is an idiot.  If your going to write an article saying basically that a person messed up and is stupid, then at least try to get names right and use all of the letters in words.  its mark ingram not richardson and there are entire words missing and more missing letters.  A typical Dennis Dodd column.
