Oh no, he didn't: Dunlap is latest Gator charged

Posted on: December 1, 2009 10:06 am

This wouldn’t be such a big deal if Brandon Spikes didn't ultimately decide his sentence.

This wouldn’t near as big a thing if, you know, Florida weren’t playing for the SEC title.

Heads might turn the other way if there wasn’t a recent history in Gainesville, if the football world weren’t waiting to see what Urban Meyer was going to do with his latest star run afoul of the law.

But it is a big deal, a huge deal. Carlos Dunlap, you messed up. You went Tony LaRussa on the entire Gator Nation by getting one of the sloppiest DUI’s in recent memory.

Asleep at the wheel?

With the engine running?

While the car was in gear?

3:25 in the morning?

Dude, that’s not drunk. That’s falling down, can’t-count-backwards-fro-100 drunk. Allegedly, of course. Certainly not exactly what you expect, though, from the BCS title game defensive MVP and one of the team leaders. Not what you want from the guy tied for the team lead in sacks (seven).  A guy who could be a first-round draft choice.

Carlos, aren’t you supposed to celebrate after beating Alabama? Another stomp of the Seminoles hardly seems worth the Captain Morgan.

But as coaches like to say, hey, they’re still college kids.

This college kid put his team at further risk of losing the SEC championship game. If Dunlap is suspended – a big if given recent history – I have this image of Trent Richardson and Mark Richardson sweeping around the end. Dunlap’s absence would give tight end Colin Peek, a Florida guy from Ponte Vedra Beach, more room. Obviously, it would have to easier protecting Greg McElroy.

The next step is up to Meyer. After the way he handled the Spikes situation, he absolutely cannot go light on Dunlap. That’s what happens when the star linebacker has to suspended himself. Remember that one after the eye gouge? Spikes was suspended for a half (laughable), then Spikes took himself out of the entire game.

If the Florida coach stops short of anything less than a one-game suspension in this case, then the SEC may step in.

I’m kidding, of course, on the SEC thing. The outrage from outside the program would be enough of a distraction. The Urbanator is smart enough to limit the damage. See ya, Carlos. We’ll check in with you, maybe, in the BCS title game or the Sugar Bowl.

This isn't on Urban

I think what's being missed in all of the hand wringing is this isn't on Meyer. Meyer isn't Dunlap's father. He can't keep tabs on all of his guys at 3 am. Dunlap screwed up. We don't know how much he had to drink because he refused a breathalyzer. Meyer did the prudent thing in suspending him for just the SEC game for now. There's a month between games. And if the facts warrant further action I hope that he would miss the trip to Pasadena.

And Dunlap's career will be fine assuming this is just a youthful trangression. I don't believe everyone on this site is a saint. Try to step out of your (Tang and White, Crimson and White, and Garnet and Gold) towers. Jared Allen has two DUI's to his credit. Leonard Little killed someone with his drunk driving. Percy Harvin failed a drug test before the NFL combine and now he's a big comeback story as the probable rookie of the year. Don't get on Dunlap because he screwed up once. He luckily didn't hurt anyone. It's all on how Dunlap wants to go from here is how he should be judged.

Oh, don't even go there mr. jokefish. Your pathetic coach Kitten allowed a certain player off after the university payed the the justice system to let Janzen Jackson off the hook. He was in the car, new there was a crack head driving it, and went along with the "little prank".

"Take a cue from Mack Brown at Texas and suspend this SOB for the remainder of the year".  Don't kid yourself..... Mack's decision was made the second he saw this kid, took a peek at his depth chart, and said..... "eh.  we don't need this kid to win a title".
Yeah, I'm sure if this were Jordan Shipley, 1 game maximum for Mack.  I recall 2 of his players (Ced Griffin and Ramonce Taylor) getting into some serious trouble, one involving a robbery at gunpoint, in downtown Austin back in 2005.  Both came to light after the big XII Title game. And Texas got their plumbers on the case.  No suspension.  Played in the title game.  Don't confuse Mack with disciplinarian.  He's lucky Sergio Kindle didn't get caught back in July with a 2nd DUI.  Lucky dog.

That being said, a one game suspension is the norm for this.  If it were a repeat offense then he would be gone.  I'm sure as hell not defending Urban Meyer in anything like this.  The Brandon Spikes incident speaks for itself. But if he gets one game...... it's still for the biggest game of the year.  This is your national title game.

I'm sure this guy goes out and drinks all the time. This time though he got so wasted that he couldn't help but to get caught. I'm sure there were no early morning classes he was rushing to get ready for.

Has anyone seen Carlos Dunlap play football this year? He's been better in recent weeks, but the lackluster effort, absence of a bull rush/swim move, inconsistency, lack of interest all point to him being the next Michael Johnson. Physical freak, horrible motivation. His "burst" off the line is nowhere near as good as advertised. Florida will hardly realize he's out. Jermaine Cunningham has been three times the end Dunlap has been this year. Justin Trattou actually looks like he wants to be there.

Listen cougar, almost all the arrests for the Gators were from people who Urban did not recruit, who had been going to school b4 he got there, and he kicked off the team the individuals who had serious offenses.  It is not fair to lay those arrests at his doorstep, when he wasn't there to help guide them for long.  He has a disciplinarian reputation at the school, but because of all these hatefilled bashers out here( Dodd included, who wrote an insulting piece of trash about the Gators in the offseason, completely failing to mention that the vast majority of trouble came from kids who weren't really "Urban's") people have been given the wrong impression.  As soon as Urban got to FL, the football team started changing for the better.  I see you just invented yourself...are you perhaps a Seminole in bearcat clothing?  A Volunteer perhaps...keep hating.  Carlos Dunlap is a good guy.  He made a mistake, and now he will have to pay for it.  Guess what...he's twenty years old and there are plenty of good-hearted twenty year olds who have done something like this.  In fact, I would say that the majority of people who post on this site have driven while over the limit after watching this kid play.  Bad mistake, but let's not make him out to be some kind of monster.  We are taking a very strong stance against drunk driving in this country, which is the right thing to do, but let's not burn people at the stake the first time they err.

I know Dodd always makes spelling errors, but was he out drinking with Dunlap when he wrote this?

How many football players have been arrested in the past graduation class , more than 20 I'm thinking . There has to be a point where Urban Meyer has to be held accountable for more than just his iconic wardrobe ( rings ) .

If I were a parent of a college student , which I am , and that student were an athlete , which he is , I would have serious reservations about sending my son to Florida while Urban Meyer is coaching there .

That is a sad statement on the state of prioritization as it pertains to college athletics versus criminal behavour . In other words , if a student athlete excells at his sport , anything short of murder or point shaving seems to be forgiven . I hope I'm wrong looking at things from afar , but if it looks like it and smells like it , it usually is it .

What is the legal age of drinking in Florida and why are these young people out at 3 AM ?
